धम्मत्थिकायस्स देसे १,
१७. [प्र.] भगवन्! अधोलोक - क्षेत्रलोक के एक आकाश प्रदेश में क्या जीव हैं; जीव के देश हैं, जीव के प्रदेश हैं, अजीव हैं, अजीवों के देश हैं या अजीवों के प्रदेश हैं ?
[उ.] गौतम! (वहाँ) जीव नहीं, किन्तु जीवों के देश हैं, जीवों के प्रदेश भी हैं, तथा हैं, अजीवों के देश हैं और अजीवों के प्रदेश भी हैं। इनमें जो जीवों के देश हैं, वे नियम से (१) एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के देश हैं, (२) अथवा एकेन्द्रियों के देश और द्वीन्द्रिय जीवों का एक देश है, (३) अथवा एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के देश और द्वीन्द्रिय जीव के देश हैं; इसी प्रकार मध्यम भंग-रहित (एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के देश और द्वीन्द्रिय जीव के देश- इस मध्यम भंग से रहित), शेष भंग, यावत् अनिन्द्रिय तकं जानना चाहिए; यावत् अथवा एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के देश और अनिन्द्रिय जीवों के देश हैं। इनमें जो जीवों के प्रदेश हैं, वे नियम से एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के प्रदेश हैं, अथवा एकेन्द्रिय जीवों के प्रदेश और एक द्वीन्द्रिय जीव के प्रदेश हैं, अथवा एकेन्द्रिय जीवों का प्रदेश और द्वीन्द्रिय जीवों के प्रदेश हैं। इसी प्रकार यावत् पंचेन्द्रिय तक प्रथम भंग के सिवाय दो भंग कहने चाहिए; अनिन्द्रिय में तीनों भंग कहने चाहिए।
धम्मत्थिकायस्स
उनमें जो अजीव हैं, वे दो प्रकार के हैं। यथा-रूपी अजीव और अरूपी अजीव । रूपी
अजीवों का वर्णन पूर्ववत् जानना चाहिए । अरूपी अजीव पाँच प्रकार के कहे गए हैं। यथा(१) धर्मास्तिकाय का देश, (२) धर्मास्तिकाय का प्रदेश, (३) अधर्मास्तिकाय का देश, (४) अधर्मास्तिकाय का प्रदेश और (५) अद्धा समय ।
17. [Q.] Bhante ! In a single space-point of the Lower World are there souls, sections (desh) of souls and space-points. (pradesh) of souls ? Also, are there non-souls, sections (desh) of non-souls and space-points (pradesh) of non-souls ?

. [Ans.] Gautam ! ( In a single space-point of the Lower World) there are no souls but only sections of souls, space-points of souls, non-soul (matter), sections of non-soul, and space-points of non-soul. Here the sections of souls, as a rule, include (1) soul-sections of one-sensed beings or (2) soul-sections of one-sensed beings and one soul-section of two-sensed beings or (3) soul-sections of one-sensed beings and soul-sections of twosensed beings; in the same way, leaving aside the middle alternative (soul-sections of one-sensed beings and one soul-section of two-sensed beings), mention other alternatives... and so on up to... non-sensed beings... and so on up to... or soul-sections of one-sensed beings and
