विवेचन - जैनेतर दार्शनिक प्राय: यह समझते हैं कि उत्पल (कमल) के जीव को सोचने-समझने की बुद्धि नहीं होती और द्रव्य मन भी न होने से वह कोई विचार नहीं कर सकता। ऐसी स्थिति में वह ज्ञानावरणीयादि कर्मों का बन्ध, वेदन, उदय या उदीरणा कैसे कर सकता है ?
इस शंका का समाधान करने हेतु गौतम स्वामी ने ये बंध आदि विषयक प्रश्न उठाकर भगवान से पूछा है। भगवान के उत्तरों से यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि एकेन्द्रिय वनस्पतिकायिक जीवों में संज्ञा तथा भाव मन होता है, जिसके कारण वे चाहे विकसित चेतना वाले न हो, परन्तु मिथ्यात्व दशा में होने के कारण विपरीत दिशा में सोचकर भी ज्ञानावरणीय आदि कर्मबन्ध कर लेते हैं। वे कर्मों को वेदते भी हैं उदय वाले भी होते हैं और 5 उदीरणा भी विपरीत दिशा में कर लेते हैं।
उत्पल के एक तथा अनेक जीवों के कर्म बन्धन आदि कैसे ? उत्पल के प्रारम्भ में जब उसके एक ही पत्ता होता है, तब एक जीव होने से एक जीव ज्ञानावरणीय आदि कर्मों का बन्धक होता है, परन्तु जब उसके अनेक पत्ते होते हैं तो उसमें अनेक जीव होने से अनेक जीव बन्धक होते हैं। आयुष्यकर्म तो समग्र जीवन में एक ही बार बंधता है, उस बन्धकाल को छोड़कर जीव आयुष्यकर्म का अबंन्धक होता है। इसलिए आयुष्कर्म के बन्धक और अबन्धक की अपेक्षा से आठ भंग होते हैं, जिनमें चार असंयोगी और चार द्विकसंयोगी होते हैं।
Elaboration-According to non-Jain schools of philosophy, in absence of brain and intellect the living being that is Utpal (a kind of lotus) is devoid of thoughts. Therefore how can it acquire bondage of, suffer fruits of, experience fruition of and cause voluntary fruition of knowledge obscuring and other karmas?

In order to explain this Gautam Swami put this question about bondage etc. before Bhagavan Mahavir. His answers make it clear that one-sensed plant-bodied beings have sentience and mind (bhaava-man). Due to this they acquire bondage of karmas including knowledge obscuring karma due to base sentiments in their unrighteous state in spite of the fact that they only have under developed sentience. They also undergo processes of suffering, fruition and regressive voluntary fruition.
Karmic bondage of single and multiple souls in Utpal-To start with there is only one petal on a lotus and thus only one soul acquires bondage of karmas. However, when it has many petals and many souls it results in having many acquirers of karmic bondage. The bondage of life-span determining karma is acquired only once in a lifetime, thus except for the moment of acquiring that bondage the soul is non-acquirer of that karma.
