बंधन-साधु का लक्ष्य तो यह होना चाहिए कि वह ऐसे पात्र की याचना करे जिसमें किसी प्रकार का कोई सुधार अथवा उसके बंधन आदि का कार्य ही न करना पड़े। ४१-४२ व ४४-४५ इन चारों सूत्रों का अर्थ यही है 16 कि “भिक्षु को जो भी पात्र मिले वह ऐसा हो कि कुछ भी संस्कार किए बिना सीधा उपयोग में आ जाए। यदि ऐसा ४
न हो तो आवश्यकतानुसार जघन्य एक और उत्कृष्ट तीन बंधन लगाये जा सकते हैं।"
__बंधन का अर्थ है- पात्र की गोलाई को धागे आदि से बाँधकर मजबूत करना जिससे अधिक समय सुरक्षित ११ रह सके।
एक स्थान पर बंधन लगाना 'एक बंधन' कहलाता है और तीन स्थानों पर बाँधना 'तीन बंधन' कहलाता है। मिट्टी के पात्र में बिना बंधन के काम चल सकता हो तो एक भी जगह बाँधने की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है। है लकड़ी के अत्यन्त छोटे पात्र में एक भी बंधन की आवश्यकता नहीं होती। ' लकड़ी के बड़े पात्र में एक बंधन की आवश्यक होती है। तुम्बे का पात्र आवश्यकतानुसार दो अथवा तीन जगह बंधन लगाने से सुरक्षित रहता है। . .
अइरेग बंधण-सूत्र ४४-४५ से स्पष्ट होता है कि आवश्यकता होने पर भिक्षु को उत्कृष्ट तीन बंधन 32 लगाने की अनुज्ञा है। तीन बंधन वाला पात्र जब तक उपयोग में आए तब तक उसे रखा जा सकता है। सामान्यत: 8 तीन से ज्यादा बंधन की आवश्यकता अथवा उपयोगिता किसी भी प्रकार के पात्र में नहीं होती है। सूत्र ४६ में 2 विपरीत परिस्थिति की संभावना के आशय से उसकी भी सीमित अनुज्ञा दी गई है यानि किसी क्षेत्र अथवा काल
की परिस्थिति में लकड़ी या तुम्बा का पात्र जिसमें पहले से ही एक या तीन बंध लगे हैं और टूट-फूट जाए तो जब से तक अन्य पात्र न मिले तब तक ४-५ बंधन लगाकर भी उसे चलाना पड़े तो यथासंभव शीघ्रातिशीघ्र मिट्टी आदि र के पात्र की याचना कर लेना चाहिए और फिर अधिक बंधन वाले पात्र को परठ देना चाहिए। उसे डेढ़ महीने के बाद रखने पर (४६वें सूत्र के अनुसार) प्रायश्चित्त आता है।

The atonement regarding repair of and sewing the cloths.
The patches are used to amend the torn clothes or to cover the hole of the cloth. It is also called graft (Paiband). The aim of the above written aphorism No 41 & 42 is that the ascetic should not use patches even once. If it is necessary then once, twice or at the most thrice it can be grafted. To patch more than thrice is restricted activity.
There are two types of patches1. Of the same material.
2. Of foreign material. Cf the same sort is where the same material is used of which the utensils is made of. Where the material is used other than that of which the utensils is made of it is called foreign material. If it is necessary that the utensil needs patches then the same sort of material should be used, not the foreign material. This law should be understood with regard to wood, hollow out gourd or clay. Along with it the use of cloth or thread will not be counted the same sort or foreign material.
