कन्या कुमारी को पाणिनी ने अपने अष्टध्यायी (२, १, ७०) में कुमारी श्रमणा के नाम से सम्बोधित किया है। पाणिनी के समय तक ब्रह्म आर्य दक्षिण से अपरिचित थे तथा बौद्ध भी अशोक से पूर्व दक्षिण में नहीं गये थे । अतः यह कहा जा सकता है कि यह नाम तथा क्षेत्र जैन संस्कृति से प्रभावित था । 'Cape Kumari was so named after the name of the Jain female was so named after the name of the jain female Ascetic. आर्य पूर्व काल में श्रमणों को जिन्हें ब्रह्मआर्यों ने असभ्य तथा सुर कहा वो आर्यों से ज्यादा सभ्य तथा उन्नत संस्कृति के थे । जब आर्य उनके सम्पर्क में आये उस समय आर्य लुटेरे एवं असभ्य अवस्था में थे । ब्रह्म आर्य भौतिक जीवन के सुखों में विश्वास रखते थे जब कि श्रमण आध्यात्मिक जीवन में विश्वास करते थे ।
