fashion, fasted unto death (Samlekhana Samthara) in this place. As he belonged to the Shramanic way, the chroniclers of the Brahmanic way gave him a degraded descent. He was called base-born, a Shudra,an outcaste and of low birth. He is said to have blood relationship with the Nandas who are said to have low and immoral origin. The Brahmana puranas and other literature speak despisingly of (the Nandas and) Chandragupta. Why ? The answer is that he was a Prachya
hero.
ब्राह्मणों द्वारा चन्द्रगुप्त को नीची जाति का बताने के पीछे जो कारण था वह उसका जैन होना, प्राच्य देश का सम्राट होना था ।
Chandragupta is called a Prachya because he was the ruler of the Prachya territory and the non-Aryan Asura Prachya people. Chandragupta, the Prachya, was a great Jaine hero following the Shramanic way of life.
गांगणि में चन्द्रगुप्त द्वारा निर्मित मूर्ति का उल्लेख हमें मिलता है । राजस्थान में गांगण नाम का गाँव जोधपुर से अठारह किलोमीटर पर है वहाँ अत्यन्त प्राचीन पार्श्वनाथ का मंदिर है जो मौर्य कालीन है । ई. सन् १६६२ ई. में वहाँ तालाब के पास भूगर्भ में कई मूर्तियाँ मिली थी । उस समय कवि समयसुन्दर गणि यात्रार्थ गांगणि गये थे तथा उन्होंने उन मूर्तियों का दर्शन व निरीक्षण किया तथा उनका वर्णन एक स्तवन में लिखा है
प्रतिमा श्वेत सोनातणी, मोटो अचरज ये होजी । चन्द्रगुप्त राजा भये, चाणक्य दिरायों राजोजी । तिण यह बिंब भरबियो, साध्या आत्म काजो जी ॥
इसके अलावा कौटिल्य के अर्थशास्त्र में लिखा है कि सम्राट ने देवस्थानों के लिये आज्ञा दी थी कि जो कोई देव मंदिर का अनादर करेगा वह दण्ड का भागी होगी । (आक्रोशाद्वेव चैत्याना मुत्तमं दंड मर्हति)
