Māra represents the evil spirit of hindrance in the acquisition of kuśala dharmas and specially Nirvāṇa. In the Pali canons and the Buddhist Sanskrit literature, Māra has been described as the 'lord of the evil forces, as the tempter' and as the "ruler of the highest of the Kamadevaloka, (the paranim mitavasavattidevaloka)' dividing 'with Sakka (Indra) the sovereignity of the Kāmāvacaradevaloka. Like Sakka and Mahābrahman he is possessed of vast powers and reigns with great magnificence in his devaloka." (Childers, PED, p. 241 ); on māra, see, Hardayal, Boddhisattva Doctrine in Buddhist Sanskrit Literature, pp. 64, 74, 306-16; A. E. Windisch, “The Mara” (quoted by Hardayal, ibid, loc. cit.); B. C.
