NOTES : IV 263-287
665 are mentioned here from 260 to 285. In brief the special characteristics of size ait are :
(a) The change of a in Sanskrit words to 7, and of 7, to g. (See Sūtras 260-262; 273-274, 276 and 267 - 268 ).
(b) The change of f to s4 and retention of 7 in the root :( See 266; 269 ).
(0) Some peculiar forms of declension of words ending in consonants. (See 263-265 ).
(d) Forms of the Absolutive in ge and cut in addition to त्ता, and कडुअ and गडुअ from the roots कृ and गम्. ( See 271-272 ):
(e) The future tense with fee instead of R, FH or E. ( See 275 ).
(f) A few additional particles such as, atid, ai, a, OI, BIHIUTE, ETT, trng and ziet. (See 277-285 ).
287-302. These Sūtras. describe the characteristics of ATTEN. This dialect rotains all the characteristics of
TITAA which is as it were the base of this dialect. .: 287. The Nom. sing. form of masculine words ending in अ is obtained in मागधी by changing this a to ए; e.g., एशे, for एषः, मेशे for मेषः etc. यदपि etc. There is an old saying "ITTHGATE raad 69 H, The old Sūtras of the sacred canon of the Jains are written in the dialect called
Artefi.” Now H.. asks : What is that dialect ? Is it related to atteft? and replies that that dialect is obtained by the application of this rule and not the next rule. The meaning is that in STEHITTf Nom. sing. of words ending in er ends in g as in potent, but I and H are not changed to s . and 7 as is required by the next rule, nor any other phonetic change peculiar to मागधी. Thus in अर्धमागधी we have put for $, À AIRÀ for JET: and not ad, at तालिशे etc.
