... देवतामूर्ति-प्रकरणम् Indra, Skanda (also called Kartikeya), Hutashan (or Agni) the Dikapalas and Lokapalas, the planets (grahas) and the
mother-goddesses (22), may be installed inside temples to Siva, provided that they are so placed that they do not cross the line of vision of Siva at all. Their benign sight will guard the city from the growth of sin and wickedness. (23).
पूर्वापरास्यं देवानां मुखं नो दक्षिणोत्तरम् । ब्रह्मा विष्णु: शिवार्केन्द्रा गुहः पूर्वपराङ्मुखः ॥२४॥ . .
पूर्व और पश्चिम मुख वाले देवों का मुख दक्षिण और उत्तर में न रखें, ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, शिव, सूर्य, इन्द्र और कार्तिकेय ये देव पूर्व और पश्चिम दिशा के मुख वाले हैं।
Idols which are meant to face the east and west should not be installed facing the south and north. .Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Arka (another name of Surya), Indra and Guha (an epithet of Karttikeya) arc deities who should be depicted with their faces towards the east and west. (24).
नगराभिमुखा: श्रेष्ठा मध्ये बाह्ये च देवताः । शिवब्रह्मजिना विष्णु: सर्वाशाभिमुखा: शुभा: ॥२५ ॥
वास्तु के मध्य में या बाहर जो देव स्थापन किया जाय वह नगर के सन्मुख रखा जाय तो श्रेष्ठ है। शिव, ब्रह्मा, जिन और विष्णु इनके मुख चारों दिशा में रखना शुभ माना है। इन देवों के मुख २४ वें श्लोक में पूर्व और पश्चिम मुख वाले माने हैं और इसमें चारों दिशा में मुख वाले माने हैं। यह मतान्तर मालूम होता है।
It is ideal if idols, installed within a building or outside, face the city. Siva, Brahma, Jina and Vishnu are auspicious facing all four cardinal points or directions. (25).
