२५७ स्मृति करता है, वह नियम से उत्तम प्रकृति वाला होता है अतः इसके चित्त को आकृष्ट करने के लिए तुम्हें सदा मद्यपान से रहित रहना है अन्यथा यह तुमसे विरक्त हो जाएगा।'
आषाढ़भूति सकल कलाओं के ज्ञान में कुशल तथा नाना प्रकार के विज्ञानातिशय से युक्त था अतः सभी नटों में अग्रणी हो गया। वह सर्वत्र प्रभूत धन तथा वस्त्र-आभरण आदि प्राप्त करता था। एक बार राजा ने नटों को बुलाया और आदेश दिया कि आज बिना महिलाओं का नाटक करना है। सभी नट अपनी युवतियों को घर पर छोड़कर राजकुल में गए। आषाढ़भूति की पत्नियों ने सोचा कि हमारा पति राजकुल में गया है अतः सारी रात वहीं बीत जाएगी। आज हम यथेच्छ मदिरा-पान करेंगी। उन्होंने वैसा ही किया तथा उन्मत्तता के कारण वस्त्र रहित होकर घर की दूसरी मंजिल में सो गईं।
इधर राजकुल में किसी दूसरे राष्ट्र का दूत आ गया अतः राजा का चित्त विक्षिप्त हो गया। यह नाटक का समय नहीं है', यह सोचकर राजा ने सारे नटों को वापस लौटा दिया। जब आषाढभूति ने दूसरी मंजिल में पहुंचकर अपनी दोनों पलियों को विगतवस्त्रा एवं बीभत्स रूप में देखा तो उसने चिन्तन किया-'अहो! मेरी कैसी मूढ़ता है? विवेक वैकल्य है, जो मैंने इस प्रकार की अशुचियुक्त तथा अधोगति की कारणभूत स्त्रियों के लिए मुक्तिपद के साधन संयम को छोड़ दिया। अभी भी मेरा कुछ नहीं बिगड़ा है। मैं गुरु-चरणों में जाकर पुन: चारित्र ग्रहण करूंगा तथा पाप-पंक का प्रक्षालन करूंगा।' यह सोचकर आषाढ़भूति अपने घर से निकलने लगा। विश्वकर्मा ने उसको देख लिया। आषाढ़भूति के चेहरे के हाव-भाव से उसने जान लिया कि यह संसार से विरक्त हो गया। उसने अपनी दोनों पुत्रियों को उठाकर उपालम्भ देते हुए कहा-'तुम्हारी इस प्रकार की उन्मत्त चेष्टाओं को देखकर सकल निधान का कारण तुम्हारा पति तुमसे विरक्त हो गया है। यदि तुम उसे लौटा सको तो प्रयत्न करो, अन्यथा जीवन चलाने के लिए धन की याचना करो।'
दोनों पत्नियां वस्त्र पहनकर आषाढ़भूति के लिए दौड़ी और पैरों में गिर पड़ीं। उन्होंने निवेदन करते हुए कहा-'स्वामिन् ! हमारे एक अपराध को क्षमा करके आप पुन: घर लौट आओ। विरक्त होकर इस प्रकार हमें मझधार में मत छोड़ो।' उनके द्वारा ऐसा कहने पर भी उसका मन विचलित नहीं हुआ। पत्नियों ने कहा-'यदि आप गृहस्थ जीवन नहीं जीना चाहते हैं तो हमें जीवन चलाने जितना धन दो, जिससे आपकी कृपा से हम अपना शेष जीवन भलीभांति बिता सकें।' अनुकम्पावश आषाढ़भूति ने उनके इस निवेदन को स्वीकार कर लिया और पुनः घर आ गया।
आषाढ़भूति ने भरत चक्रवर्ती के चरित्र को प्रकट करने वाले 'राष्ट्रपाल' नामक नाटक की तैयारी की। विश्वकर्मा ने राजा सिंहस्थ को निवेदन किया कि आषाढ़भूति ने 'राष्ट्रपाल' नामक नाटक की रचना की है। आप उसका आयोजन करवाएं। नाटक के मंचन हेतु उनको आभूषण पहने हुए ५०० राजपुत्र चाहिए। राजा ने ५०० राजपुत्रों को आज्ञा दे दी। आषाढ़भूति ने उनको सम्यक् प्रकार से प्रशिक्षित किया। नाटक प्रारंभ हुआ। आषाढ़भूति ने भरतचक्रवर्ती का चरित्र प्रस्तुत किया और राजपुत्रों ने भी यथायोग्य अभिनय किया।

What a lack of wisdom, that I abandoned the means of liberation, *samyama*, for the sake of these women who are impure and the cause of my downfall. Nothing is lost yet. I will go to the feet of my Guru and regain my character and wash away the sins." Thinking this, Aashaadhbhuti started to leave his house. Vishwakarma saw him. From the expressions on Aashaadhbhuti's face, he understood that he had become detached from the world. He picked up his two daughters and said to them reproachfully, "Seeing your such intoxicated behavior, your husband has become detached from you, the cause of all your wealth. If you can bring him back, try, otherwise, beg for money to live."
