___कौशल जनपद के गिरिपुष्पित नगर में सिंह नामक आचार्य अपने शिष्य-परिवार के साथ आए। एक बार वहां सेवई बनाने का उत्सव आया। उस दिन सूत्र पौरुषी के बाद सब तरुण साधु एकत्रित हुए। उनका आपस में वार्तालाप होने लगा। उनमें से एक साधु बोला-'इतने साधुओं में कौन ऐसा है, जो प्रातःकाल ही सेवई लेकर आएगा।' गुणचन्द्र नामक क्षुल्लक बोला-'मैं लेकर आऊंगा।' साधुओं ने कहा-'यदि सेवई सब साधुओं के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं होगी अथवा घृत या गुड़ से रहित होगी तो उससे हमको कोई प्रयोजन नहीं है, तुम्हें घृत और गुड़ से युक्त पर्याप्त सेवई लानी होगी।' क्षुल्लक बोला-'जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा होगी, वैसी ही सेवई मैं लेकर आऊंगा।' ऐसी प्रतिज्ञा करके वह नांदीपात्र को लेकर भिक्षार्थ गया। उसने किसी कौटुम्बिक के घर में प्रवेश किया। साधु ने वहां पर्याप्त सेवई देखी। वह प्रचुर घी और गुड़ से संयुक्त थी। साधु ने अनेक वचोविन्यास से सुलोचना नामक गृहिणी से सेवई की याचना की। गृहस्वामिनी ने साधु को भिक्षा देने के लिए सर्वथा प्रतिषेध करते हुए कहा-'मैं तुमको कुछ भी नहीं दूंगी।' तब क्रोधपूर्वक क्षुल्लक मुनि ने कहा-'मैं निश्चित रूप से घी और गुड़ से युक्त इस सेवई को ग्रहण करूंगा।' क्षुल्लक के वचनों को सुनकर सुलोचना भी क्रोधावेश में आकर बोली-'यदि तुम इस सेवई को किसी भी प्रकार प्राप्त करोगे तो मैं समझूगी कि तुमने मेरे नासापुट में प्रस्रवण किया है।' तब क्षुल्लक ने सोचा- 'मुझे अवश्य ही इस घर से सेवई प्राप्त करना है।' दृढ़ निश्चय करके वह घर से निकला और पार्श्व के किसी व्यक्ति से पूछा-'यह किसका घर है ?' व्यक्ति ने बताया कि यह विष्णुमित्र का घर है। क्षुल्लक ने पुनः पूछा कि वह विष्णुमित्र इस समय कहां है? व्यक्ति ने उत्तर दिया-'वह अभी परिषद् के बीच है।'
क्षुल्लक ने परिषद् के बीच में जाकर पूछा-'तुम लोगों के बीच में विष्णुमित्र कौन है?' लोगों ने कहा-'विष्णुमित्र से आपको क्या प्रयोजन है।' साधु ने कहा-'मैं उससे कुछ याचना करूंगा।' विनोद करते हुए उन्होंने कहा-'यह बहुत कृपण है अत: आपको कुछ नहीं देगा। आपको जो मांगना है, वह हमसे मांगो।' तब विष्णुमित्र ने सोचा कि इतने लोगों के बीच मेरी अवहेलना न हो अत: उनके सामने बोला-'मैं ही विष्णुमित्र हूं, मुझसे कुछ भी मांगो।'
तब क्षुल्लक बोला-'यदि तुम छह महिलाप्रधान व्यक्तियों में से नहीं हो तो मैं याचना करूंगा।' तब परिषद् के लोगों ने पूछा-'वे छह महिलाप्रधान पुरुष कौन हैं ?' क्षुल्लक ने कहा कि उन छह पुरुषों के नाम इस प्रकार हैं-१. श्वेताङ्गुलि २. बकोड्डायक ३. किंकर ४. स्नायक ५. गृध्रइवरिङ्खी ६. हदज्ञ। १. गा. २१९/६, वृ प. १३५,१३६, निभा ४४५१, चू पृ. ४२१, पिंप्रटी प. ६०। २. जीभा के अनुसार गिरिपुष्पित नगर कौशल देश में था (जीभा १३९५)। ३. यह छहों कथाएं ३७ वीं कथा के अन्तर्गत है लेकिन सुविधा की दृष्टि से इन कथाओं का वर्णन कथा सं. ३७ से पूर्व कर दिया है।

In the city of Giripuspit in the Kauśala Janapada, an Ācārya named Simha arrived with his disciples. One day, there was a festival of making sevāī. On that day, after the Sūtra Paurauṣī, all the young sādhus gathered. They began to converse among themselves. One of the sādhus said, "Among so many sādhus, who is there who will bring sevāī in the morning?" A Kṣullaka named Guṇacandra said, "I will bring it." The sādhus said, "If the sevāī is not enough for all the sādhus, or if it is without ghee or jaggery, then it will be of no use to us. You must bring enough sevāī with ghee and jaggery." The Kṣullaka said, "As you wish, I will bring such sevāī." Making this promise, he took his begging bowl and went out to beg. He entered the house of a householder. The sādhus saw plenty of sevāī there. It was mixed with abundant ghee and jaggery. The sādhus, with many words of persuasion, requested the sevāī from the householder named Sulocana. The householder, completely refusing to give alms to the sādhus, said, "I will not give you anything." Then, in anger, the Kṣullaka Muni said, "I will definitely take this sevāī with ghee and jaggery." Hearing the Kṣullaka's words, Sulocana, also in a fit of anger, said, "If you obtain this sevāī in any way, I will consider that you have committed an offense against my nose." Then the Kṣullaka thought, "I must obtain sevāī from this house." With firm determination, he left the house and asked a person nearby, "Whose house is this?" The person told him that it was the house of Viṣṇumitra. The Kṣullaka again asked where Viṣṇumitra was at that time. The person replied, "He is currently in the assembly."

The Kṣullaka went to the assembly and asked, "Who is Viṣṇumitra among you?" The people said, "What do you want from Viṣṇumitra?" The sādhus said, "I will request something from him." Jokingly, they said, "He is very miserly, so he will not give you anything. Ask us for whatever you want." Then Viṣṇumitra thought that he should not be disregarded in front of so many people, so he said in front of them, "I am Viṣṇumitra, ask me for anything."
