पिंडनियुक्ति नूपुर निकाल लिया।' पुत्र ने कहा-'अशोक वनिका में मैं ही था।' वृद्ध पिता बोला-'मैं निश्चयपूर्वक कह सकता हूं कि रात्रि में उसके साथ कोई अन्य पुरुष था।' इसी बीच पुत्रवधू ने आकर उच्च स्वर में कहा-'जब तक मेरी कलंक-शुद्धि नहीं होगी, तब तक मैं भक्त-पान ग्रहण नहीं करूंगी।'
कोलाहल सुनकर लोग एकत्रित हो गए। उसने सबके समक्ष कहा–'मैं दिव्य-घट लेकर स्वयं को शुद्ध प्रमाणित करूंगी।' वृद्ध नागरिकों ने कहा-'कुत्रिकापण में यक्ष के समक्ष परीक्षा दो।' वह स्नान आदि से शुद्ध होकर बलिकर्म करके नागरिकों के साथ वहां पहुंची। वहां राजा आदि भी उपस्थित थे। इसी बीच वह सुदर्शन नामक जार पुरुष भी पागल का रूप बनाकर फटे-पुराने कपड़े पहनकर वहां आ गया। वह लोगों का आलिंगन करता हुआ उसके पास आया और पुत्रवधू का बलात् आलिंगन करने लगा। लोकपालों को संबोधित करके उसने यक्ष से कहा-'मेरे माता-पिता ने जिस व्यक्ति के साथ मेरा विवाह किया, उसको तथा इस ग्रहाविष्ट पुरुष को छोड़कर यदि मैंने मन से भी किसी पुरुष का चिन्तन नहीं किया है तो मैं यक्ष के नीचे से कुशलतापूर्वक निकल जाऊंगी।' उसकी बात सुनकर यक्ष किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ होकर कुछ सोचने लगा। इतने में वह शीघ्रता से यक्ष की प्रतिमा के नीचे से निकल गयी। लोगों में उसकी जयजयकार होने लगी। सभी स्थविर को धिक्कारने लगे। यक्ष ने सोचा-'इसने मुझे भी ठग लिया।'
__सत्यवादी होने पर भी वृद्ध झूठा साबित हो गया। इस चिन्ता से स्थविर की निद्रा उड़ गई। उसको अंत:पुर की रानियों के द्वारपाल के रूप में नियुक्त कर दिया गया। रात्रि का प्रथम प्रहर बीतने पर सभी रानियां निद्राधीन हो गईं लेकिन एक रानी को नींद नहीं आ रही थी। स्थविर ने सोचा अवश्य ही कोई कारण होना चाहिए अतः उसने कपट-निद्रा लेनी प्रारंभ कर दी। रानी हाथी की सूंड के सहारे महावत के पास चली गई। देरी से आने के कारण महावत ने रोषपूर्वक लोहे की सांकल से उसे ताड़ित किया। रानी ने कहा-'गुस्सा मत करो। अंत:पुर में एक ऐसा वृद्ध नियुक्त हुआ है, जिसे बहुत देरी से नींद आई।' प्रात:काल हाथी पर चढ़कर वह पुन: अंत:पुर में चली गई। वृद्ध ने सोचा-'जब उभयकुल विशुद्ध राजा की पत्नियां भी ऐसा विरुद्ध आचरण कर सकती हैं तो फिर मेरी पुत्रवधू ने जो किया, उसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं है।' ऐसा सोचकर वह चिंतामुक्त होकर गहरी नींद में चला गया। सूर्योदय होने पर भी वह नहीं उठा। राजा तक उसकी शिकायत पहुंची। राजा ने उसको बुलाया लेकिन वृद्ध बोला कि मुझे मत उठाओ। सातवें दिन उसकी नींद टूटी तब राजा ने पूछा- क्या बात है?' तब उसने सारी बात बताते हुए राजा से कहा कि मैं उस रानी को नहीं पहचानता हूं।
