________________ 290 NOTES ON Of these RT which is considered to be the best of all the Prâkritas by Dandin is called Prâkritachandrikâ. in the P. 79. सिद्धिर्लोकाच्च - संतोष्टव्यम् – The Sutra means that the propriety of forms in the Prâkrita is to be proved or established from their use in the language. The word in the Sûtra is used to show that the propriety can be established also by means of the Sûtras given in the book. The author then gives the broad distinguishing features of the Prâ krita, meaning the Mahârâshṭrî, in comparison with the Sanskrit. They are the following: 1. Letters and are not found in the Prâkrita. This is known from the absence of these letters in the language and also from the Sutras which teach that they are changed to з, &c. 2. Letters RI and षू are changed to सू. 3. and are not found, they being generally changed to and at. is occasionally found, the vocative particle अयि being changed to ऐ. 4. and are not found except in combination with other consonants; for the Sûtra'' teaches that is optionally changed to, where is combined with गू; the Satra 'प्राकू लाघाप्लक्षशाङ्गे ङोत्' teaches the insertion of अ before ड् and in the words श्लाघा, प्लक्ष, लू and; thereby showing that is not dropped, but remains combined with गू in शार्ङ्ग changed into सारङ्ग; the Sūtra ' वर्गेन्त्य : ' teaches that बिन्दु or अनुस्वार is changed to the final letter of the class to which the following consonant belongs as in वक्को, कुम्पलो, बुन्धो &c.; here too ङ् is used as combined with another letter and not by itself; and the Sûtra चेर्वृश्चिके चुर्वा' teaches that in the word वृश्चिक, व् is changed to that is to combined with 2 च्. " 5. There is no dual number, the plural number being used in place of it. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
