INTRODUCTION.
As described above, the Sâ tras are commented upon by Trivikrama, Lakshmîdhara, and Simharâja. Trivikrama maintains the order of the Sûtras in commenting upon them. His work is therefore like the Kâs'ikâvritti on the Ashțâdhyâyî of Pâņini. The Prâkțitarupâvatâra of Simiharâja, edited by Dr. E. Hultzsch, and the Shadbhâshâchandrika of Lakshmîdhara are both upon the lines of Bhattoji Dîkshita's Siddhântakaumudî on Pânini's Ashţâdhyâyî and follow the same order in the treatment of the dialects, taking them up in the order of the Mahârâshtrî, the S'aurasenî, the Mâgadhî, the Chûlikâ, the Chûlikâpais'âchikâ, and the Apabhrams'a, giving first declensional forms, then indeclinables, and finally conjugational forms. But the Prâkțitarûpâvatâra is very brief compared to the Shadbhâshâchandrikâ. It explains only 575 out of 1085 Sutras and does not mention and explain the Ganas at all. The Shadbhâshâchandrikâ explains almost all the Sûtras,* gives a complete list of the Ganas, not omitting Nipätas in which even Des'ya words are included. As he says in his introductory verses, he has based his work on Trivikrama's Vșitti and calls it a sort of commentary upon it.t He has consulted the works of Trivikrama, Hemachandra, and Bhâmaha and compresses in a short form in his work what is given in them all.I The Shadbhâshâchandrika is undoubtedly an exhaustive work on Prâkțita grammar like Hemachandra's work. It gives a larger

§ Another Prakṣita grammar, Audâryachintâratna of S'rutasâgara is said to be more extensive and explanatory than those of Hemachandra and Trivikrama. Vide p. 5 of 'Literary Wealth of India, Search for Prâkrita manuscripts' (a Reprint from the Dawn Magazine ) 1910, by S. P. V. Ranganathasvâmt of Vizagpattam. The Sûtras of S'rutasagara, however, are in no way superior to those in the present text as will appear further on,
