पद्मपुराणे
महामोहहृतात्मानः कथं नरकसम्भवाः । एतयाऽवस्थया युक्ता न जानीथाऽऽत्मनो हितम् ॥२७॥ अरष्टलोकपर्यन्ता हिंसानृतपरस्विनः । रौद्रध्यानपराः प्राप्ता नरकस्थं प्रतिद्विपः ॥२८॥ भोगाधिकारसंसक्तास्तीवक्रोधादिरन्जिताः । विकर्मनिरता नित्यं सम्प्राप्ता दुःखमीरशम् ॥२६॥ रमणीये विमानाने ततो वीच्य सुरोत्तमम् । सौमित्रिरावणौ पूर्वमप्राष्टां को भवानिति ॥३०॥ स तयोः सकलं वृत्तं पद्माभस्य तथाऽऽत्मनः । कर्मान्वितमभाषिष्ट विचित्रमिति सम्भवम् ।।३१।। ततः श्रुत्वा स्ववृत्तान्तं प्रतिबोधमुपागतौ । उपशान्तात्मकी दीनमेवं शुशुचतुस्तकौ ॥३२॥ तिः किं न कृता धर्मे तदा मानुषजन्मनि । अवस्थामिमकां येन प्राप्ताः स्मः पापकर्मभिः ।।३३।। हा ! हा! किं कृतमस्माभिरात्मदुःखपरं परम् । अहो मोहस्य माहात्म्यं यत्स्वार्थादपि हीयते ॥३४॥ त्वमेव धन्यो देवेन्द्र यत्यक्त्वा विषयस्पृहाम् । जिनवाक्यामृतं पीत्वा सम्प्राप्तोऽस्यमरेशताम् ॥३॥ ततोऽसौ पुरुकारुण्यो मा भैष्टेति बहुस्वनम् । एतैत नरकानाकं नये युष्मानितीरयन् ॥३६॥ ततः परिकर बध्वा प्रहीतु स्वयमुखतः । दुर्ग्रहास्तु विलीयन्ते तेऽग्निना नवनीतवत् ॥३७।। सर्वोपायैरपीन्द्रेण ग्रहीतुं स्पष्टमेव च । न शक्यास्ते यथा भावाश्छायया दर्पणे स्थिताः ॥३८।। ततस्तेऽत्यन्तदुःखार्ता जगदुर्देवयानिनः । पुराकृतानि कर्माणि तानि भोग्यान्यसंशयम् ॥३६॥
कठिनाईसे वे चित्तकी स्थिरताको प्राप्त हुए ॥२६॥ शान्त वातावरण होनेपर सीतेन्द्रने कहा कि महामोहसे जिनकी आत्मा हरी गई है ऐसे हे नारकियो ! तुम लोग इस दशासे युक्त होकर भी आत्माका हित नहीं जानते हो ? ॥२७॥ जिन्होंने लोकका अन्त नहीं देखा है, जो हिंसा, झूठ और परधनके हरणमें तत्पर हैं, रौद्रध्यानी हैं तथा नरकमें स्थित रहनेवालेके प्रति कि बुद्धि है ऐसे लोग ही नरकमें आते हैं ।।२८।। जो भोगोंके अधिकारमें संलग्न हैं, तीव्र क्रोधादि कषायोंसे अनुरञ्जित हैं और निरन्तर विरुद्ध कार्य करनेमें तत्पर रहते हैं ऐसे लोग ही इस प्रकारके दुःखको प्राप्त होते हैं ॥२६॥
अथानन्तर सुन्दर विमानके अग्रभागपर स्थित सुरेन्द्रको देखकर लक्ष्मण और रावणके जीवने सबसे पहले पूछा कि आप कौन हैं ? ॥३०॥ तब सुरेन्द्रने उनके लिए श्रीरामका तथा अपना सब वृत्तान्त कह सुनाया और साथ ही यह भी कहा कि कर्मानुसार यह सब विचित्र कार्य संभव हो जाते हैं ॥३।। तदनन्तर अपना वृत्तान्त सनकर जो प्रतिबोधको प्राप्त हुए थे तथा जिनकी आत्मा शान्त हो गई थी ऐसे वे दोनों दीनता पूर्वक इस प्रकार शोक करने लगे ॥३२॥ कि अहो! हम लोगोंने उस समय मनुष्य जन्ममें धर्ममें रुचि क्यों नहीं की ? जिससे पापकर्मों के कारण इस अवस्थाको प्राप्त हुए हैं ॥३३॥ हाय हाय, आत्माको दुःख देनेवाला यह क्या विकट कार्य हम लोगोंने कर डाला ? अहो ! यह सब मोहकी महिमा है कि जिसके कारण जीव आत्महित से भ्रष्ट हो जाता है ॥३४॥ हे देवेन्द्र ! तुम्ही धन्य हो, जो विषयोंकी इच्छा छोड़ तथा जिन वाणीरूपी अमृतका पानकर देवोंकी ईशताको प्राप्त हुए हो ॥३५॥
तदनन्तर अत्यधिक करुणाको धारण करनेवाले देवेन्द्र ने कई बार कहा कि 'डरो मत, डरो मत, आओ, आओ, मैं तुम लोगोंको नरकसे निकालकर स्वर्ग लिये चलता हूँ॥३६॥ तत्पश्चात् वह सुरेन्द्र कमर कसकर उन्हें स्वयं ले जाने के लिए उद्यत हुआ परन्तु वे पकड़ने में न आये। जिस प्रकार अग्निमें तपानेसे नवनीत पिघलकर रह जाता है उसी प्रकार वे नारको भी पिघलकर वहीं रह गये ॥३७॥ इन्द्रने उन्हें उठानेके लिए सभी प्रयत्न किये पर वे उठाये नहीं जा सके। जिस प्रकार दर्पणमें प्रतिबिम्बित ग्रहणमें नहीं आते उसी प्रकार वे भी ग्रहणमें नहीं आ सके ॥३८॥ तदनन्तर अत्यन्त दुःखी होते हुए उन नारकियोंने कहा कि हे देव ! हम लोगोंके जो पूर्वोपार्जित कर्म हैं, वे निःसन्देह भोगनेके योग्य नहीं

Those who are attached to the right to enjoy, who are delighted by intense anger and other passions, and who are constantly engaged in harmful actions, are the ones who attain this kind of suffering. ||29||
Then, seeing the excellent god on the beautiful chariot, Lakshmana and Ravana first asked, "Who are you?" ||30||
Then the god told them the whole story of Rama and himself, and also said that according to karma, all these strange things are possible. ||31||
Then, hearing their own story, they attained enlightenment and their souls became calm. They lamented in this way, filled with sorrow. ||32||
"Alas! Why did we not engage in dharma during our human birth? Because of our evil deeds, we have attained this state." ||33||
"Alas! Alas! What terrible deeds have we done that bring suffering to our souls? Oh, the greatness of delusion, that it even surpasses self-interest!" ||34||
"You are blessed, O Indra, because you have given up desire for worldly things and, having drunk the nectar of the words of the Jinas, have attained the lordship of the gods." ||35||
Then, filled with great compassion, Indra said many times, "Do not fear, do not fear. Come, come, I will take you out of hell and bring you to heaven." ||36||
Then, girding his loins, Indra was ready to take them himself, but they could not be grasped. Just as ghee melts in fire, so too did those hell-beings melt and remain there. ||37||
Indra tried all means to lift them, but they could not be lifted. Just as reflections in a mirror cannot be grasped, so too could they not be grasped. ||38||
Then, filled with great sorrow, those hell-beings said, "O god, the karmas we have accumulated in the past are undoubtedly worthy of being experienced." ||39||
