तानूचुस्तापसा वृद्धाः सान्त्ववाचा पुनः पुनः । तिष्ठतं यदि नास्माकमाश्रमे शृणुतं ततः ॥१३|| सर्वातिथ्यसमेतास्वप्यटवीषु विचक्षणी । विश्रम्भं जातु मा गातां नारीष्विव नदीष्विव ॥१४॥ तापसप्रमदा दृष्टा पद्मं पद्मनिरीक्षणम् । लक्ष्मणं च जहः सर्व कर्तव्यं शून्यविग्रहाः ॥१५॥ काश्चिदुत्कण्ठया युक्तास्तन्मार्गाहितलोचनाः । व्रजन्त्यन्यापदेशेन सुदूरं विह्वलात्मिकाः ॥१६॥ मधुरं ब्रवते काश्चिद्भवन्तोऽस्माकमाश्रमे । किं न तिष्ठन्तु सर्व नः करिष्यामो यथोचितम् ॥१७॥ अतीत्य त्रीनितः कोशानरण्यानी जनोण्झिता । महानोकहसन्छन्ना हरिशार्दूलसंकुला ॥१८॥ समित्फलप्रसूनाथं तापसा अपि तां भुवम् । न व्रजन्ति महामीमां दर्भसूचीभिराचिताम् ॥१९॥ चित्रकूटः सुदुलध्यः प्रविशालो महीधरः । भवद्भिः किं न विज्ञातः प्रकोपं येन गच्छत ॥२०॥ तापस्योऽवश्यमस्माभिर्गन्तव्यमिति चोदिताः। कृच्छण तान्यवर्तन्त कुर्वाणास्तकथां चिरम् ॥२१॥ ततस्ते भूमहीध्राग्रग्रावतातसुकर्कशम् । महातरुढमारूढवल्लीजालसमाकुलम् ॥२२॥ क्षुदतिक्रुद्धशार्दूलनखविक्षेतपादपम् । सिंहाहत द्विपोद्गीर्णरक्तवमौक्तिकपिच्छलम् ॥२३॥ उन्मत्तवारणस्कन्धतष्टस्कन्धमहातरुम् । केसरिध्वनिवित्रस्तसमुत्कीर्णकुरङ्गकम् ॥२४॥ सुप्ताजगरनिश्वासवायुपूरितगह्वरम् । वराहयूथप्रोथामविषमीकृतपल्वलम् ॥२५॥ महामहिषशृङ्गाग्रमग्नवल्मीकसानुकम् । ऊर्वीकृतमहामोगसंचरगोगिभीषणम् ॥२६॥
उनका चित्त हरा गया जिससे उन्होंने धीरजको दूर छोड़ दिया ॥१२॥ वृद्ध तपस्वियोंने शान्त वचनोंसे उनसे बार-बार कहा कि यदि आप लोग हमारे आश्रममें नहीं ठहरते हैं तो भी हमारे वचन सुनिए ।।१३।। यद्यपि ये अटवियाँ सर्व प्रकारके आतिथ्य-सत्कारसे सहित हैं तो भी नारियों
और नदियों के समान इनका विश्वास नहीं कीजिए। आप स्वयं बुद्धिमान् हैं ।।१४।। तपस्वियोंकी स्त्रियोंने कमलके समान नेत्रोंवाले राम और लक्ष्मणको देखकर अपने सब काम छोड़ दिये। उनका सर्व शरीर शून्य पड़ गया ॥१५॥ उत्कण्ठासे भरी कितनी ही विह्वल स्त्रियां उनके मार्गमें नेत्र लगाकर किसी अन्य कार्यके बहाने बहुत दूर तक चली गयीं ॥१६।। कोई स्त्रियां मधुर शब्दोंमें कह रही थीं कि आप लोग हमारे आश्रम में क्यों नहीं रहते हैं ? हम आपका सब कार्य यथायोग्य रीतिसे कर देंगी ।।१७|| यहाँसे तीन कोश आगे चलकर मनुष्योंके संचारसे रहित, बड़े-बड़े वृक्षोंसे भरी तथा सिंह, व्याघ्र आदि जन्तुओंसे व्याप्त एक महाअटवी है ।।१८। वह अत्यन्त भयंकर है तथा डाभकी सूचियोंसे व्याप्त है । ईंधन तथा फल-फूल लानेके लिए तपस्वी लोग भी वहाँ नहीं जाते हैं ॥१९।। आगे अत्यन्त दुलंध्य तथा बहुत भारी चित्रकूट नामका पर्वत है सो क्या आप जानते नहीं हैं जिससे क्रोधको प्राप्त हो रहे हैं ।।२०। इसके उत्तरमें राम-लक्ष्मणने कहा कि हे तपस्वियो ! हम लोगोंको अवश्य ही जाना है। इस प्रकार कहनेपर वे बड़ी कठिनाईसे लौटी और लौटती हुई भी चिरकाल तक उन्हींकी कथा करती रहीं ॥२१॥
अथानन्तर उन्होंने ऐसे महावन में प्रवेश किया कि जो पृथिवी और पर्वतोंके अग्रभागके चट्टानोंके समूहसे अत्यन्त कर्कश था तथा बड़े-बड़े वृक्षोंपर चढ़ी हुई लताओंके समूहसे जो व्याप्त था ।।२२।। जहाँ भूखसे अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध हुए व्याघ्र नखोंसे वृक्षोंको क्षत-विक्षत कर रहे थे। जो सिंहोंके द्वारा मारे गये हाथियोंके गण्डस्थलसे निकले रुधिर तथा मोतियोंकी कीचसे युक्त था ।।२३।। जहाँ उन्नत हाथियोंने अपने स्कन्धोंसे बड़े-बड़े वृक्षोंके स्कन्ध छील दिये थे। जहाँ सिंहोंकी गर्जनासे भयभीत हुए मृग इधर-उधर दौड़ रहे थे ॥२४।। जहाँ सोये हुए अजगरोंकी श्वासोच्छ्वास वायुसे गुफाएँ भरी हुई थीं। तथा सूकर समूहके मुखके अग्रभागके आघातसे छोटे-छोटे जलाशय ऊँचे-नीचे हो रहे थे॥२५।। बड़े-बड़े भैंसाओंके सींगोंके अग्रभागसे जहाँ वामियों के

The aged ascetics, again and again, consoled them with soothing words. "Even if you do not stay in our ashram, please listen to us." ||13||

Though these forests are filled with all kinds of hospitality, do not trust them, just like you wouldn't trust women or rivers. You are wise. ||14||

Seeing Rama and Lakshmana, with their lotus-like eyes, the wives of the ascetics abandoned all their tasks. Their entire bodies became void. ||15||

Some women, filled with anxiety, their eyes fixed on their path, wandered far away under the pretext of some other task, their minds bewildered. ||16||

Some women, with sweet words, said, "Why don't you stay in our ashram? We will do everything for you as needed." ||17||

Beyond three kos, lies a great forest, devoid of human presence, filled with huge trees and teeming with lions, tigers, and other beasts. ||18||

It is extremely terrifying, filled with sharp blades of grass. Even ascetics do not go there to gather fuel or flowers. ||19||

Ahead lies the very difficult to reach, massive mountain called Chitrakoot. Do you not know that it is filled with anger? ||20||

Rama and Lakshmana replied, "O ascetics! We must go there." Thus urged, they reluctantly turned back, and even while returning, they continued to speak of their journey for a long time. ||21||

Then they entered a great forest, rough and rugged with the cliffs of the earth and mountains, filled with a tangle of vines climbing up huge trees. ||22||

Where tigers, enraged by hunger, were tearing at the trees with their claws. Where the ground was stained with the blood and pearls from the tusks of elephants slain by lions. ||23||

Where wild elephants had stripped the bark from the trunks of huge trees with their shoulders. Where deer, terrified by the roar of lions, were running in all directions. ||24||

Where caves were filled with the breath of sleeping pythons. Where small ponds were being churned up by the impact of the snouts of herds of boars. ||25||

Where the ground was covered with mounds of earth, ignited by the tips of the horns of large buffaloes. Where the earth was trembling with the movement of huge, terrifying snakes. ||26||

Their minds were disturbed, and they lost their composure. ||12||
