पद्मपुराणे
"कृत्तोऽपि कस्यचिन्मूर्धा गर्वनिर्भर चेतसः । दष्टदन्तच्छदोऽपप्तधुङ्कारमुखरश्विरम् ॥ २९३॥ अन्येनाशीविषेणेव पततात्यन्तभीषणा । दृष्टिरुल्कानिभाक्षेपि प्रतिपक्षस्य विग्रहे ॥ २९४ ॥ अर्धकृत्तं शिरोऽन्येन धृत्वा वामेन पाणिना । पातितं प्रतिपक्षस्य शिरो विक्रमशालिना ।। २९५ । कश्चिद्विक्षिप्य कोपेन शस्त्रमप्राप्तशत्रुकम् । हन्तुं परिघतुल्येन बाहुनैव समुद्यतः ||२९६।। अरातिं मूच्छितं कश्चित्सिषेच स्वासृजा भृशम् । शीतीकृतेन वस्त्रान्तवायुना संभ्रमान्वितः ॥ २९७॥ विश्रान्तं मूर्च्छया शरैः शस्त्रघातैः सुखायितम् । मरणेन कृतार्थस्वं मेने कोपेन कम्पितैः ॥ २९८॥ एवं महति संग्रामे प्रवृत्ते भीतिभीषणे । मटानामुत्तमानन्दसंपादनपरायणे ॥ २९९ ॥ गजनासासमाकृष्टवीरकल्पिततत्करे । जवनाश्वखुराघातपतत्तत्कर्तनोद्यते ||३००|| सारथिप्रेरणा कृष्टरथविक्षतै वाजिनि । जङ्घावष्टम्भसंक्रान्तक्षतकुम्भमहागजे ॥ ३०१ ।। परस्परजवाघातदलत्पादातविग्रहे । मटोत्तमकराकृष्टपुच्छनिष्पन्दवाजिनि ॥ ३०२ ॥ कराघातदलत्कुम्भिकुम्भनिष्ठ्यूतमौक्तिके । पतन्मातङ्गनिर्भग्नरथाहतपतद्भटे ॥३०३॥

उछलते हुए सिरके द्वारा ही रुधिरकी वर्षा कर शत्रुको मार डाला था ॥ २२२॥ जिसका चित्त गर्वसे भर रहा था ऐसे किसी योद्धाका सिर यद्यपि कट गया था तो भी वह ओठोंको डसता रहा और हुंकारसे मुखर होता हुआ चिरकाल बाद नीचे गिरा था || २९३ || जो साँपके समान जान पड़ता था ऐसे किसी योद्धाने गिरते समय उल्का के समान अत्यन्त भयंकर अपनी दृष्टि शत्रुके शरीरपर डाली थी ||२९४ || किसी पराक्रमी योद्धाने शत्रुके द्वारा आधे काटे हुए अपने सिरको बायें हाथ से थाम लिया और दाहिने हाथसे शत्रुका सिर काटकर नीचे गिरा दिया || २९५ ॥ किसी योद्धाका शस्त्र शत्रु तक नहीं पहुँच रहा था इसलिए क्रोधमें आकर उसने उसे फेंक दिया और अर्गल के समान लम्बी भुजासे ही शत्रुको मारनेके लिए उद्यत हो गया || २९६ || किसी एक दयालु योद्धाने देखा कि हमारा शत्रु सामने मूच्छित पड़ा है जब उसे सचेत करनेके लिए जल आदि अन्य साधन न मिले तब उसने सम्भ्रमसे युक्त हो वस्त्र के छोरकी वायुसे शीतल किये गये अपने ही रुधिरसे उसे बार-बार सींचना शुरू कर दिया ।। २९७॥ क्रोधसे काँपते हुए शूर-वीर मनुष्योंको जब मूर्च्छा आती थी तब वे समझते थे कि विश्राम प्राप्त हुआ है, जब शस्त्रोंको चोट लगती थी तब समझते थे कि सुख प्राप्त हुआ और जब मरण प्राप्त होता था तब समझते थे कि कृतकृत्यता प्राप्त हुई है ॥२९८॥
इस प्रकार जब योद्धाओं के बीच महायुद्ध हो रहा था, ऐसा महायुद्ध कि जो भयको भी भय उत्पन्न करनेवाला था तथा उत्तम मनुष्योंको आनन्द उत्पन्न करनेमें तत्पर था || २९९|| जहाँ हाथी अपनी सूँड़ोंमें कसकर वीर पुरुषोंको अपनी ओर खींचते थे पर वे वीर पुरुष उनकी सूँड़ें स्वयं काट डालते थे । जहाँ लोग घोड़ोंको काटनेके लिए उद्यत होते अवश्य थे पर वे वेगशाली घोड़े अपने खुरोंके आघातसे उन्हें वहीं गिरा देते थे || ३०० || जहाँ घोड़े सारथियों की प्रेरणा पाकर रथ खींचते थे पर उनसे उनका शरीर घायल हो जाता था । जहाँ मस्तकरहित बड़े-बड़े हाथी पड़े हुए थे और लोग उनपर पैर रखते हुए चलते थे || ३०१ || जहाँ पैदल सिपाहियों के शरीर एक दूसरेके वेगपूर्ण आघातसे खण्डित हो रहे थे । जहाँ उत्तम योद्धा अपने हाथोंसे घोड़ोंकी पूँछ पकड़कर इतने जोरसे खींचते थे कि वे निश्चल खड़े रह जाते थे ||३०२ || जहाँ हाथोंकी चोटसे हाथियोंके गण्डस्थल फट जाते थे तथा उनसे मोती निकलने लगते थे । जहाँ गिरते हुए हाथियोंसे रथ टूट जाते थे और उनकी चपेटमें आकर अनेक योद्धा घायल
