से सहोदरा हैं । पाश्चात्य मनीषी डा० ए० सी० बुल्नर ने अपने 'इन्ट्रोडक्सन टु प्राकृत' में संस्कृत को शिष्ट समाज की भाषा और प्राकृत को जनसाधारण की भाषा माना है-
'It is probable that it was in the more general sense that प्राकृत ( शौरसेनी पद, महाराष्ट्री पद ) was first applied to ordinary common speech as distinct from the highly polished perfected Sanskritam... If in “Sanskrit" we include the Vedic language and all dialects of the old Indo-Aryan period, then it is true to say that all the Prakrits are derived from Sanskrit. If on the other hand "Sanskrit" is used more strictly of the Panini-Patanjali language or "Classical Sanskrit" thus it is untrue to say that any Prakrit is derived from Sanskrit, except that Sauraseni, the Midland Prakrit, is derived from the old Indo-Aryan dialect of the Madhyadesa on which Classical Sanskrit was mainly based.
'प्राकृत भाषाओं का व्याकरण' में डॉ० पिशेल ने भी मूल प्राकृत को जनता की भाषा माना है तथा साहित्यिक प्राकृतों को संस्कृत के समान सुगठित भाषा । इससे सिद्ध होता है कि संस्कृत और प्राकृत दोनों सहोदरा भाषाएँ हैं तथा इनकी उत्पत्ति का स्रोत छान्दस् ( वैदिक ) भाषा है ।
(स) प्राकृत से संस्कृत की उत्पत्ति -- रुद्रट के काव्यालङ्कार के एक श्लोक की व्याख्या करते हुए नमि साधु ( ११वीं शताब्दी ) ने प्राकृत ( अपभ्रंश भी ). को सकल भाषाओं का मूल बतलाया है तथा उसे संस्कृत तथा अन्यान्य प्राकृत भाषाओं का जनक माना है । व्याकरण के नियमों से संस्कार किये जाने के कारण ही संस्कृत कहलाती है तथा संस्कारहीन स्वाभाविक वचन व्यापार प्राकृत -- 'प्राक् पूर्वं कृतं प्राक्कृतं बालमहिलादिसुबोधं सकलभाषानिबन्धभूतं (१) प्राकृत संस्कृत मागधपिशाचभाषाश्च शौरसेनी च ।
