mining the Criticas Text before I compiled the card-index of the whole text for my critical study. My mission got momentum when, within a few days of my decision to undertake the work of the Critical Text, I met the revered Muni Shri Punyavijayaji to inform him about it. He encouraged me and offered me his precious Palmleaf Manuscript-the P. Ms.-in origiual, in a bunch of ten folios at a time with the condition that I handle them carefully for the purpose and return them fully in tact. He further introduced me to the managers of a number of a Jaina Bhandaras in Gujarat to enable me to procure other manuscripts thereform! This is how the idea of the work took shape and matured into a fullfledged Critical Edition of the Tilakamañjari.
In the course of my work, I decided to cover, not only the original Mss. of the work but also, the text tradition as followed by śāntyācārya, the author of the Tippanaka commentary, and by Padmasāgara, the author of the Vyākhyā commentary on the TM, as also the text as printed by the publishers of the Nirnaya Sagar Press, Bombay, and the one published, along with the Paraga Vivști of Shri Vijayalavanyasuri, by Shri Vijayalavanyasuri Jnana Mandir, Botad (Saurashtra),
Although I had already determined the Critical Text of the Tilakamanjari for my thesis, the work of preparing the press-copy with all the variants from various Mss. of the TM, its commentaries and the printed texts, was quite a different task. After submitting my thesis on the TM to the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Barda, for the degree of Ph.D., in 1970, I resumed, as my post-doctoral project, the work of preparing the press-copy of the Critical Text of the Tilakamanjari, and approached the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, for financial assistance for the research project in 1971. The gtant was sanctioned, and I completed the work by 1974. But, unfortunately, the printing press to which the work was given for printing in 1975 found the work too difficult for them, and could print only five formes in five years ! Then, being in Government service, I was transferred to Surendranagar and the work was practically written off by the press. When, after my voluntary retirement from the Government service in October, 1983, I approached the press for recovering the presscopy, I was shocked to find that they had sold away the press and the file No. 2 and the file No. 7, comprising the latter half of the press-copy of the TM and that of the Padma sāgara's Vrtti, respectively were lost, I set myself to the task again, retrieved the lost portion of the press-copy of the text of the TM proper from my rough jottings, and work was given afresh to another printing press; as for the Padmasagara's Vrtti; I had to drop the idea of including it in the first volume.
