हरिवंशपुराणे
ते कियद्भिरपि वासरैद्रुतं द्रौपदीप्रभृतिभामिनीजनैः । मातृपुत्रसहिताः ससाधनाः प्राप्य तं ददृशुरादृता वने ॥ ५४ ॥ व्यर्थिकाः शवशरीरगोचरोद्वर्तनस्नपनमण्डनक्रियाः । वर्तयन्तमुपगृह्य तं चिरं बान्धवा रुरुदुरुच्चकैःस्वनाः ॥५५॥ कुन्त्यधीनतनया विनम्य तं बोधयन्ति हरिसंस्क्रियां प्रति । कोपनः स न ददाति याचितस्तं तदा विषफलं शिशुर्यथा ॥ ५६ ॥ सज्ज्यतां सुलघुमज्जनक्रिया पाण्डवास्तदनुपानभोजनम् । नोकुमिच्छति पिपासितः प्रभुः क्षिप्रमित्यभिहिते तथाकृते ॥५७॥ मज्जयत्यभिनिवेश्य विष्टरे भोजयत्यपि स पाययत्यपः । व्यर्थतामपि तदास्य पाण्डवा मेनिरेऽनुचरणाः कृतार्थताम् ॥ ५८ ॥ निन्युरित्थमनुवृत्तितस्तु ते तत्र मेघसमयं बलानुगाः । मोहमेवपटलं बलस्य वा भेत्तुमाविरभवत्तदा शरत् ॥ ५१ ॥ सप्तपर्णसुरभेः सदा तदा वैष्णवस्य वपुषो वपुष्मतः । दूरदेशमगमद्विगन्धता गन्धयोर्हि न तयोः सहस्थितिः ॥ ६० ॥ आययावथ कृतव्यवस्थितिर्भ्रातृपूर्वनिजसारथिः सुरः । सोऽयमाभिमुखकाललब्धितः बोधनाय बलदेवसन्निधिम् ॥ ६१ ॥
जरत्कुमारको आगे कर पाण्डव लोग दुःखसे पीड़ित बलदेवको देखनेकी इच्छासे चले || ५३ ॥ द्रौपदी आदि रानियों, माता-पुत्रों एवं सेना के साथ बड़ी शीघ्रतासे चलकर कुछ दिनों बाद उन्होंने वनमें बलदेवको प्राप्त कर देखा । उस समय बलदेव कृष्णके मृत शरीरको उबटन लगाना, स्नान कराना तथा आभूषण पहनाना आदि व्यर्थं क्रियाएँ कर रहे थे । उन्हें देख सब बन्धुजन आदरके साथ उनसे लिपट गये और उच्च शब्द कर चिरकाल तक रोते रहे ।।५४-५५ ॥ कुन्ती और उनके पुत्रों नमस्कार कर बलदेवसे कृष्णके दाह-संस्कारको प्रार्थना की परन्तु जिस प्रकार बालक विषफलको नहीं देता है उलटा कुपित होता है उसी प्रकार बलदेवने भी मांगनेपर कृष्णका मृतक शरीर नहीं दिया, उलटा क्रोध प्रकट किया || ५६|| बलदेवने कहा कि हे पाण्डवो ! स्नानकी शीघ्र तैयारी करो और फिर उत्तम भोजन-पानकी व्यवस्था करो, हमारा प्रभु ( कृष्ण ) प्यासा है तथा शीघ्र ही भोजन करना चाहता है । बलदेवके इस प्रकार कहनेपर पाण्डवोंने स्नान तथा भोजन - पानकी तैयारी की ॥५७॥
बलदेवने कृष्णको आसनपर बैठाकर नहलाया, भोजन कराया और पानी पिलाया परन्तु उनका वह सब प्रयत्न व्यर्थं गया । यद्यपि पाण्डव भी बलदेवके इस कार्यको व्यर्थ मानते थे तथापि वे उनके कहे अनुसार आचरण कर अपने आपको कृतकृत्य मानते थे ॥५८॥ इस प्रकार बलदेव के पीछे-पीछे चलनेवाले पाण्डवोंने उनके कहे अनुसार कार्य कर उस वनमें वर्षाकाल पूर्ण किया । तदनन्तर उनके मोहरूपी मेघपटलको भेदनेके लिए शरद्काल प्रकट हुआ || ५९ || पहले कृष्ण के शरीर से सदा सप्तपर्णके समान सुगन्धि आती थी परन्तु उस समय दुर्गन्ध आने लगी और वह दुर्गन्ध दूर देश तक फैल गयी सो ठोक ही है क्योंकि दोनों गन्धों की एक साथ स्थिति नहीं होती ॥ ६० ॥
