पचाशत्तमः सर्गः
पौण्ड्रः पद्मरथश्चापि कपिलो मगदत्तकः । क्षेमधूर्त इमे सर्वे समाः समरथा रणे ॥४२॥ महानेमिधराक्ररनिषधोल्मुकदुर्मुखाः । कृतवर्मा वराटाख्यश्वारुकृष्णश्च यादवाः ॥ ८३ ॥ शकुनिर्यवनो मानुदुश्शासन शिखण्डिनौ । वाह्लीकसोमदत्तश्च देवशर्मा वकस्तथा ॥ ८४ ॥ वेणुदारी च विक्रान्तो राजानोऽर्धरथा इमे । विचित्रयोधिनो घोराः संग्रामेष्वपराङ्मुखाः ॥ ८५॥ अतः परं नृपाः सर्वे कुलमानयशोधनाः । रथिनः प्रथिताश्वामी यथायोग्यं बलद्वये ॥ ८६ ॥ अर्णवोपमयोस्तत्र तदाभ्यर्णनिवेशयोः । सेनयोस्तूर्णमागत्य कर्णस्याभ्यर्णमाकुला ॥ ८७ ॥ कुन्ती निष्णात संबन्धतनयानुमता मता । कानीन स्नेहसंभारपरायत्तशरोरिका ||८८ ॥ कण्ठलग्ना रुदन्ती तं प्रतिबोधयति स्म सा । मातापुत्रस्वसंबन्धमादिमध्यावसानतः ॥ ८९ ॥ ततः कम्बलवृत्तान्त कुरुवंशावतारवित् । कुन्तीपाण्डुसुतस्वं तु निश्चिकायात्मनस्तदा ॥ ९० ॥ सान्तःपुरेण कर्णेन निर्णीत निजबन्धुना । पूजिताम्रात्मजं कुन्ती जगाद जनितादरा ॥ ९१ ॥ उत्तिष्ठ पुत्र गच्छामो यत्र ते भ्रातरोऽखिलाः । तिष्ठन्त्युत्कण्ठिताश्चान्ये वैकुण्ठप्रमुखा निजाः ॥९२॥ कुरूणामीश्वरः पुत्र स्वमेव मुवि सांप्रतम् । कृष्णस्य रामभद्रस्य सम्प्रति प्राणवत् प्रियः ॥ ९३॥ त्वं राजावरजाग्रस्ते छत्रधारी युधिष्ठिरः । भीमश्चामरधारी तु मन्त्रिमुख्यो धनंजयः ॥ ९४ ॥ नकुलः सहदेवेन प्रतीहारः सहस्फुटम् । अहं तु जननी नीव्या नित्यं तव हितोद्यता ॥ ९५ ॥
वसुदेवसे बड़े अक्षोभ्य आदि आठ भाई, शम्ब, भोज, विदूरथ, द्रुपद, सिहराज, शल्य, वज्र, सुयोधन, पौण्ड्र, पद्मरथ, कपिल, भगदत्त और क्षेमधूर्त ये सब समरथ थे तथा युद्ध में समान शक्तिके धारक थे ॥ ८१-८२ ॥ महानेमि, धर, अक्रूर, निषेध, उल्मुक, दुर्मुख, कृतवर्मा, वराट, चारुकृष्ण, शकुनि, यवन, भानु, दुश्शासन, शिखण्डी, वाह्लीक, सोमदत्त, देवशर्मा, वक, वेणुदारी और विक्रान्त ये राजा अर्धरथ थे । ये सभी राजा आश्चर्यकारक युद्ध करनेवाले एवं धीर-वीर थे तथा युद्ध से कभी पराङ्मुख नहीं होते थे ॥ ८३-८५ ॥ इनके सिवाय कुल, मान और यशरूपी धनको धारण करनेवाले समस्त राजा रथी नामसे प्रसिद्ध थे । ये राजा यथायोग्य दोनों ही सेनाओं में थे ॥ ८६ ॥

समुद्र समान दोनों पक्षकी सेनाएँ जब पास-पास आ गयीं तब कुन्ती बहुत घबड़ायी । वह शीघ्र ही कणके पास गयी। वहां जाने में उसे युधिष्ठिर आदि पुत्रोंने अनुमति दे दी थी। उस समय कन्या अवस्थाके पुत्र कर्णके ऊपर जो उसका अपार स्नेह था उससे उसका शरीर विवश हो रहा था । उसने कणके कण्ठसे लगकर रोते-रोते आदि, मध्य और अन्तमें जैसा कुछ हुआ वह सब अपना माता और पुत्रका सम्बन्ध बतलाया । उसने यह भी बतलाया कि मैंने तुझे उत्पन्न होते ही लोकलाज के भयसे कम्बल में लपेटकर छोड़ दिया था। कर्ण कम्बलके वृत्तान्तको जानता था और यह भी जानता था कि कुरुवंशमें मेरा जन्म हुआ है । अब कुन्ती के कहने से उसने निश्चय कर लिया कि मैं कुन्ती और पाण्डुका पुत्र हूँ ।।८७ - ९० ।। अपने बन्धुजनोंका निर्णय कर कने अपनी समस्त स्त्रियों के साथ कुन्तीकी पूजा की । तदनन्तर आदर दिखाती हुई कुन्तीने अपने प्रथम पुत्र कणसे कहा कि हे पुत्र ! उठ, वहां चलें जहाँ तेरे सब भाई तथा श्रीकृष्ण आदि अपने अन्य आत्मीय जन तेरे लिए उत्कण्ठित हो रहे हैं ||९१-९२ || हे पुत्र ! इस समय पृथिवीपर कुरुओंका स्वामी तू ही है और कृष्ण तथा बलदेवके लिए प्राणोंके समान प्रिय है ||९३|| तू राजा है, तेरा छोटा भाई युधिष्ठिर तेरे ऊपर छत्र लगावेगा, भोभ चँवर ढोरेगा, धनंजय मन्त्री होगा, सहदेव और नकुल तेरे द्वारपाल होंगे और नीतिपूर्वक निरन्तर हित करनेमें उद्यत मैं तेरी माता हूँ ।।९४-९५।।
