हरिवंशपुराणे अतिवितप्य तपस्तनुशोषणं विषयलुब्धमनोभवपेषणम् । अगमदेशसुखाम्बुधिपोषणं प्रथमकल्पमथामरतोषणम् ॥४१॥ सुरवधूनिवहादिपरिग्रहः सकलभूषणभूषितविग्रहः । सुरसुखामृतसागरसंगतः सममतिष्टत भावरसं गतः ॥४२॥ दिवि कदाचिदसौ वरकामिनीनिवहमध्यगतोऽवधिगोचरम् । समनयद्वनितां वनमालिका परिचितः प्रणयः खलु दस्त्यजः ॥४३॥ सुमुखराजकृतं च पराभवं स परिचिन्त्य सुरस्तदनन्तरम् । विषमितोन्मिषितावधिचक्षुषा मिथुनमैक्षत खेचरयोस्तयोः ॥४४॥ प्रभुतया प्रविधाय परामवं परभवे हृतवांश्च मम प्रियाम् । इह भवेऽपि तयैव सहेक्ष्यते रतिमितः स पर समुखः खलः ॥४५॥ कृतवतोऽपकृति विषमां द्विषो द्विगुणिता यदि सा न विधीयते । प्रभुतया किमनर्थिकया प्रमोः प्रमवतोऽपि निरुद्यमचेतसः ॥४६॥ इति विचिन्त्य रुषा कलुषीकृतः प्रतिविधानकृतौ कृतनिश्चयः । भुवमवातरदाशु स वैरधीस्त्रिदिवतो दिवसाधिपमास्वरः ॥४७॥ स खलु खेचरराजसुतं सुरः सुमुखराजचरं खचरीसखम् ।
प्रविलसंतमवाप यदृच्छया सुहरिवर्षगतं हरिविभ्रमम् ॥४८॥ रोककर रतिरूप रहस्यसे युक्त गृहस्थाश्रमको छोड़ दिया और जितेन्द्रिय हो जिनेन्द्र भगवान्के द्वारा प्रदर्शित आश्रमकी शरण ली अर्थात् दैगम्बरी दीक्षा धारण कर ली, सो ठीक ही है क्योंकि शरणकी इच्छा करनेवाले मनष्योंके लिए वह ही सर्वोत्तम शरण है ॥४०॥ दीक्षा लेकर उसने शरीरको सुखा देनेवाला एवं विषयके लोभी कामदेवको पीस देनेवाला कठिन तप किया जिसके फलस्वरूप वह सुखरूपी सागरको पुष्ट करनेवाले एवं देवोंके सन्तोषदायक प्रथम स्वर्गको प्राप्त हुआ ॥४१॥ वहाँ देवांगनाओंके समूहको आदि लेकर अनेक प्रकारका परिग्रह जिसे प्राप्त था, सब प्रकारके आभूषणोंसे जिसका शरीर सुशोभित था और जो देवोंके सुखरूपी अमृतके सागरमें निमग्न था ऐसा वह देव अनेक भावों और रसोंको प्राप्त होता हुआ वहाँ सुखसे रहने लगा ॥४२।।
कदाचित् वह देव स्वर्गमें उत्तमोत्तम स्त्रियोंके बीच बैठा था कि उसने अचानक ही अपनी पूर्वभवकी स्त्री वनमालाको अवधिज्ञानका विषय बनाया अर्थात् अवधिज्ञानके द्वारा उसका विचार किया सो ठीक ही है क्योंकि परिचित-अनुभूत स्नेह बड़ी कठिनाईसे छूटता है ।।४३।। विचार करते ही उसे सुमुख राजाके द्वारा किया हुआ पराभव स्मृत हो गया। तदनन्तर एक बार निमीलित कर उसने अवधिज्ञानरूपी नेत्रको पुनः खोला तो विद्याधर और विद्याधरीका वह युगल सामने दिखने लगा ॥४४॥ वह विचार करने लगा कि देखो जिस दुष्ट सुमुखने पूर्वभवमें प्रभुतावश तिरस्कार कर हमारी स्त्रीका हरण किया था वह इस भवमें भी उसी स्त्रीके साथ परम रतिको प्राप्त हुआ दिखाई दे रहा है ॥४५|| यदि विषम अपकार करनेवाले शत्रुका दूना अपकार नहीं किया तो समर्थ होनेपर भी निरुद्यम चित्तके धारक प्रभुकी निरर्थक प्रभुतासे क्या लाभ है ? ॥४६॥ ऐसा विचारकर क्रोधसे जिसका चित्त कलुषित हो रहा था, तथा बदला लेनेका जिसने दृढ़ निश्चय कर लिया था ऐसा वह सूर्यके समान देदीप्यमान देव पूर्व वैरको बुद्धिमें रख शीघ्र ही स्वर्गसे पृथिवीपर उतरा ॥४७॥ उस समय राजा सुमुखका जीव आर्य नामका विद्याधर, अपनी विद्याधरीके साथ हरिवर्ष क्षेत्रमें इच्छानुसार क्रीड़ा करता हुआ इन्द्रके समान सुशोभित १. चक्षुषः म.। २. हतवांश्च म.।

Reflecting on the defeat inflicted on him by King Sumukha earlier, and then opening his Avadhi-cakshu (clairvoyant vision), he beheld the couple of Vidyadharas (celestial beings) engaged in amorous play. ||44||

He contemplated that the wicked Sumukha, who had earlier overpowered him and snatched away his beloved, was now enjoying intimacy with the same woman in this life as well. ||45||

He wondered whether it was worthwhile to use his mighty powers against the mindless Sumukha, who had already been defeated, since doubling the punishment for the enemy may not be justified. ||46||

Filled with anger and determined to take revenge, the radiant deva descended swiftly from the heavens to the earth. ||47||

By chance, he came upon the son of the Khechara (celestial) king, Sumukha's attendant, who was enjoying himself in the Harivarsya region. ||48||
