हरिवंशपुराणे क्षारोष्णतीव्रसद्भावनदोवैतरणीजलात् । 'दुर्गन्धान्मृन्मयाहौरादुःखं भुञ्जन्ति दुःसहम् ॥३६॥ अक्ष्णोनिमीलनं यावास्ति सौख्यं च जातुचिद् । नरके पच्यमानानां नारकाणामहर्निशम् ॥३६७॥ स्युस्तेषामशुमतराः परिणामाः शरीरिणाम् । लिङ्ग नपुंसकाख्यं स्यात् संस्थानं हुण्डसंज्ञकम् ॥३६८॥ आगामितीर्थकतणां तथैवोपशमैनसाम् । उपसर्गाहतिं भक्त्या : कुर्वन्त्यन्यायने सुराः ॥३६९॥ चत्वारिंशत्सहाष्टामिर्घटिकाः प्रथमक्षितौ । अन्तरं नारकोत्पत्तेरन्तरज्ञैः स्फुटीकृतम् ॥३७०॥ सप्ताहश्चेव पक्षः स्यान्मासो मासौ यथाक्रमम् । चत्वारोऽपि च षण्मासा विरहः षट सु भूमिषु ॥३७॥ तीव्रमिथ्यात्वसंबद्धा बह्वारम्मपरिग्रहाः । पृथिवीस्ताः प्रपद्यन्ते तिर्यञ्चो मानुषास्तथा ॥३२॥ आद्यामसंज्ञिनो यान्ति द्वितीयां च प्रसर्पिणः । पक्षिणश्च तृतीयायां चतुर्थी च भुजंगमाः ॥३७३॥ पञ्चमीमपि सिंहास्तु षष्ठीमपि च योषितः । प्रयान्ति प्राणिनः पापाः सप्तमी मत्स्यमानुषाः ॥३७४॥ सप्तम्युतितो यायात्तामेवानन्तरं सकृत् । षष्टीतो निर्गतो द्विस्तां पञ्चमी त्रिवथ ब्रजेत् ॥३७५॥ चतुर्थी च चतुर्वारान् प्रपद्येत ततश्च्युतः । तृतीयां पञ्च कृत्वोऽपि तस्या एव समागतः ॥३७६॥ द्वितीयायां च षटकृत्वः सप्तकृत्वस्तथाऽसुमान् । प्रथमाया विनिर्यातः प्रथमायां प्रजायते ॥३७७॥ सप्तमीतो विनिर्यातः संज्ञितिर्यक्त्वभाक पुनः । संख्येयायुक्तो याति नरकं तनुमद्गणः ॥३७॥ षष्टीतस्तु विनिर्यातो लभते नैव संयमम् । तं लभेतापि पञ्चम्या निर्वाणं न तु तद्भवे ॥३७९॥ लभेतापिच निर्वाणं चतुर्थीनिःसृतः पुनः । निश्चयेनैव नैवाङ्गी तीर्थकृत्त्वं प्रपद्यते ॥३८॥
दूसरेके द्वारा दिये हुए शारीरिक एवं मानसिक दुःखको सहते रहते हैं ॥३६५॥ वे खारा गरम तथा अत्यन्त तीक्ष्ण वैतरणी नदीका जल पीते हैं और दुर्गन्धि युक्त मिट्टीका आहार करते हैं इसलिए निरन्तर असह्य दुःख भोगते रहते हैं ॥३६६।। रातदिन नरकमें पचनेवाले नारकियोंको निमेष मात्र भी कभी सुख नहीं होता ॥३६७॥ उन नारकियोंके निरन्तर अत्यन्त अशुभ परिणाम रहते हैं। तथा नपुंसक लिंग और हुण्डक संस्थान होता है ॥३६८॥ जो आगामी कालमें तीर्थकर होनेवाले हैं तथा जिनके पापकर्मोंका उपशम हो चका है। देव लोग भक्तिवश छ: माह पहलेसे उनके उपसर्ग दूर कर देते हैं ।।३६९।। अन्तरके जाननेवाले आचार्योंने प्रथम पृथिवीमें नारकियोंको उत्पत्तिका अन्तर अड़तालीस घड़ी बतलाया है ॥३७०।। और नीचेकी छह भूमियों में क्रमसे एक सप्ताह, एक पक्ष, एक मास, दो मास, चार मास और छह मासका विरह-अन्तरकाल कहा है ।।३७१॥ जो तीव्र मिथ्यात्वसे युक्त हैं तथा बहुत आरम्भ और बहुत परिग्रहके धारक हैं ऐसे तिर्यंच और मनुष्य उन पृथिवियोंको प्राप्त होते हैं अर्थात् उनमें उत्पन्न होते हैं ॥३७२॥ असंज्ञी पंचेन्द्रिय पहली पथिवी तक जाते हैं, सरकनेवाले दूसरी पथिवी तक, पक्षी तीसरी तक, सपं चौथो तक सिंह पाँचवीं तक, स्त्रियां छठवीं तक और तीव्र पाप करनेवाले मत्स्य तथा मनुष्य सातवीं पृथिवी तक जाते हैं ॥३७३-३७४।। सातवीं पृथिवीसे निकला हुआ जीव यदि पुनः अव्यवहित रूपसे सातवोंमें जावे तो एक बार, छठवोंसे निकला हुआ छठवोंमें दो बार, पांचवींसे निकला हुआ पांचवीं में तीन बार, चौथीसे निकला हुआ चौथीमें चार बार, तीसरीसे निकला हुआ तीसरीमें पाँच बार, दूसरीसे निकला हुआ दूसरीमें छः बार और पहलीसे निकला हुआ पहलोमें सात बार तक उत्पन्न हो सकता है ।।३७५-३७७|| सातवीं पृथिवीसे निकला हुआ प्राणी नियमसे संज्ञो तिर्यंच होता है तथा संख्यात वर्षकी आयका धारक हो फिरसे नरक जाता है॥३७८॥ छठवीं पथिवीसे निकला हआ जीव संयमको प्राप्त नहीं होता। और पांचवीं पृथिवीसे निकला जीव तो संयमको प्राप्त हो सकता है पर मोक्ष प्राप्त नहीं कर सकता ॥३७९।। चौथी पृथिवीसे निकला हुआ मोक्ष प्राप्त कर सकता है परन्तु निश्चयसे तीर्थंकर नहीं हो सकता ॥३८०॥ तीसरी दूसरी और पहली पृथिवीसे निकला १. दुर्गन्धा म., २. मृन्मयाहाराः म. । ३. अन्तिमषण्मासेषु । ४. प्राणिसमूहः ।

And a being who has emerged from the fifth earth can attain self-control, but not liberation. ||379|| A being who has emerged from the fourth earth can attain liberation, but he will definitely not become a Tirthankara. ||380|| A being who has emerged from the third, second, and first earth,
