FOREWORD
It affords me immense pleasure to place before those interested in the Jain canon the critical edition of the Anuyogadvārasūtra accompanied by three commentaries also critically edited, viz. Jinadāsagani-Mahattara's Cūrņi,
Acāryaśrī-Haribhadrasūri's short Vivīti, and Maladhārisri-Hemacandrasūri's extensive Vstti.
The text of the Anuyogadvārasūtra used here was critically edited by the late Rev. Munirāja Shrī Punyavijayaji Mahārāja with the cooperation of Pandits Dalsukhbhāi Mālavaṇīyā and Amftlāl Mohanlāl Bhojak. This was published in 1968 as the first volume of the Jaina-AgamaSeries accompanied by a number of useful appendices. The description of the manuscripts used to establish the edition is reprinted here in Appendix 1.
The commentaries had also been published before: Jinadāsagaņi's Cūrņi and Haribhadrasūri's Vivsti (both edited by Muni Sagarānandasūriji) were printed in Ratlām by the Shrīrşabhadevaji Keśarīmalaji Shvetāmbarasamsthā in samvat 1984 (1928 CE); Maladhāri Hemacandrasūri's Vrtti was published from Surat by the Shreşthi-Devacandra-Lālabhās Fund (2 v., 1915--16) and from Pātan by the Keśarabāt Jñānamandira, in samvat 1995, etc. The text of the three commentaries presented here has been critically edited from many old palm-leaf manuscripts obtained from the Jain libraries in Jaisalmer, Pāțan and Cambay. These are described in the footnotes at the beginning of the commentaries, while the variant readings are given in Appendices 2-4. The three commentaries have been printed together to demonstrate the development in the presentation of the meaning and to facilitate comparison between the commentaries in the hope that this will help readers to understand the meaning very clearly.
The Anuyogadvārasūtra has four divisions: upakrama (with six sub-divisions), niksepa, anugama and naya. Here the portion of the upakrama division up to the nāma sub-division has been given, the remaining portion will be given in the second and final part.
In editing these works I have been very much helped by my disciples and especially by Sādhavīji Jinendraprabhāśrījî who is a grand-disciple of my late mother Sadhaviji Manoharaśrīji Mahārāja. I am also very much grateful to all those who have helped me in various ways in this task.
