Chapter Pasutra 23-24
219
The essence of the form, such as the body and intellect, is of an impermanent nature; because the irregular form cannot be represented in a singular way; the essence of matter is in a dynamic form; like that of a mosquito, a beetle, etc. There are various distinctions of the static form that is spherical, triangular, quadrangular, circular, etc.
The distinction is that of the analysis and division of the unity form of the total aggregate; and it has five types: 1. ‘Auric’: division occurring through cutting or tearing, like wood, stone, etc., 2. ‘Chonik’: existing as separate particles, like grains of rice, flour, etc., 3. ‘Khand’: splitting into pieces, like fragments of a body, 4. ‘Pratar’: falling out, as seen in dry leaves, boards, etc., 5. ‘Anutat’: peels coming off, like those of bamboo, sugarcane, etc.
This is referred to as darkness. It is a result of the obstruction created by the light entering.
Shadow arises from the covering over the light. There are two types of this. The clean reflection that is seen in clear substances like mirrors shows the color, shape, etc., of the face as they are; this is the shadow as a result of color and such transformations. The other is an imprecise representation (shadow) that falls on unclean substances.
The intense light from the sun is called solar illumination and the gentle light from the moon is termed lunar reflection.
