Tattvarthasutra
The states of existence and body are of such a nature. Whichever birth is attained, whether inferior or superior, the time one can live in that state is called 'bhav-sthiti'; and being born repeatedly in one species without taking birth in any other species in between is called 'kaya-sthiti'. The inferior and superior states of the human being mentioned above are its bhav-sthiti. The idea regarding kaya-sthiti is as follows: whether human or tiryanch, all have an inferior kaya-sthiti, which is a particular measure of bhav-sthiti. The superior kaya-sthiti is the dimension of seven or eight births of a human being; that is, any human being, after remaining for seven or eight births in the human species, will certainly leave that species.
The kaya-sthiti and bhav-sthiti of tiryanch are not the same. Therefore, it is necessary to describe both their states in detail. It is as follows: the bhav-sthiti of earth-bodied beings is twenty-two thousand years, the bhav-sthiti of water-bodied beings is seven thousand years, the bhav-sthiti of air-bodied beings is three thousand years, and the bhav-sthiti of fire-bodied beings is three and a half days. The kaya-sthiti of all four is of a countless duration, either avasaripini or utsaripini. The bhav-sthiti of plant-bodied beings is ten thousand years, and the kaya-sthiti is of infinite utsaripini to avasaripini duration. The bhav-sthiti of single-sensed beings is one year, of two-sensed beings is fifty-one hours, and of four-sensed beings is six months. The kaya-sthiti of those three is of a thousand years. The bhav-sthiti of five-sensed beings varies between gaṇa and samūmi.
