Introduction
1. The author of the Tattvārthasūtra, Umāsvāti, recognizes two types of lineage: birth lineage and knowledge lineage. When considering the history of someone's birth, one must think about the lineage connected to their father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, grandson, great-grandson, and so on; and when one wants to know the history of knowledge and scriptures, one should reflect on the lineage associated with the creator of the scriptures, teachers, grand-teachers, disciples, and grand-disciples—essentially the guru-disciple lineage.
1. These two lineages have been acknowledged in Arya tradition and Arya literature for thousands of years. "Birth lineage" primarily refers to the household life, while "knowledge lineage" primarily pertains to the guru lineage. References to both lineages are clearly noted in the Pāṇini Vyākaraṇa Sutra: “Viyonivibhyoḍuṣṭra” 4, 2, 77—indicating that the clear concept of these two lineages is very ancient, as noted by Pāṇini.
