Chapter 1 - Sutra 16
This sutra is with reference to support. It is suggested by the sequence mentioned in the sutra that the origin of understanding arises from the order stated in the sutra. Now, it describes the distinctions of understanding:
"Of various, very many, quick, unattached, undubious, and certain understandings, there are indeed many."
The understanding associated with the six instruments, which are five senses and one mind, is differentiated in terms of various forms such as "many," "various," "quick," "unattached," "undubious," and "certain." These distinctions arise from the variety of the subject and the quickness of the grasping nature. For example: It can be many-grasping, it can be attached, it can be certain, it can be of lesser grasp, it can have various grasp, it can be single-grasping, quick-grasping, of eye-grasping, unattached-grasping, attached-grasping, undubious-grasping, dubious-grasping, prior-grasping, and later-grasping.
