Chapter 1 Sutra 9 There are two types – causal and resultant. In these types, right perception is not the cause. That is, right perception cannot manifest in the state of rise of delusion. In the same way, because right perception is not obtained in the beginningless state of cloaked (ignorance), it is also not resultant or natural. 14. Attributed state – lesser degree. Among the three previously mentioned types of right perception, primary right perception is the least because living beings with such right perception are always fewer in number compared to those with other types of right perception. With respect to subsidiary right perception, the primary right perception is numerous, and from the perspective of total right perception, it is infinite. The reason total right perception is infinite is that it exists among all liberated souls, and the liberated are countless. [7-8] Now it states the distinctions of right knowledge: mind (mati), scriptural (śrut), directly experienced (avadhi), mental (manah-paryaya), and omniscient (kevala) are the five types of knowledge. Just as the characteristics of right perception have been shown in the sutra, the characteristics of right knowledge have not been shown. This is because after knowing the characteristics of right perception, the characteristics of right knowledge do not spontaneously arise. Nevertheless, the state of total knowledge is much longer than that of subsidiary knowledge; therefore, it can also be called pure in that expectation.
