opic, their expressions are different. Let us note the difference of expression.
"abhåsae tivihe pannatte tań jahă-anāie vă apajjavasie 1 anäle vä sapajjavasie 2 sädie vā sapajjavasie 3" (Prajñāpanāsūtra, sū. 1375 p. 315).
“abhāsae duvihe pannatte tam jaha-sätīte vā apajjavasite 1 sātīte vā sapajja vasite 2” (Jīvābhigamasútra, Folio 442 B).
The five paper-manuscripts which we have utilised in the preparation of this critical edition contain the expression identical with the one found in Jivābhigamasūtra. Even Pt. Jivavijayaji in his Țabo on Prajñāpanāsūtra accepts the reading or expression identical with the one found in Jīvābhigamasutra and accordingly mentions two types of ābhāşaka. Āc. Malayagiri in his commentaries on Prajñāpanāsūtra and Jivābhigamasūtra follows the readings found in the original texts of the respective Sūtras. That is, in his commentary on Prajñāpanāsūtra he mentions three types of ābhāsaka whereas in his commentary on Jivābhigama he mentions two types. But he does not note in either of these two commentaries the difference between the two readings found in the two Sutras.
ACCOUNT OF THE PRINTED EDITIONS OF
PRAJNAPANĀPANĀSUTRA
Before the present edition, there have been published six editions of Prajñāpanāsūtra. We give below an account of these six editions.
1. In 1940 V. S. Ray Dhanapatisimhaji, for the first time, published Prajñāpanāsūtra edited by Rși Shri Nänakacandraji. This edition contains the text of Prajñāpanāsūtra, Sanskrit translation of the Sūtra prepared by Shri Ramacandragani, Āc. Malayagiri's commentary and the vernacular commentary by Shri Paramānanda Rşi. The text of Prajñāpanāsūtra printed in this edition is fraught with unauthentic readings. Moreover, punctuation marks are wrongly placed and word-divisions are wrongly made. We think that this printed text is based on some manuscript of the same nature. We have mainly utilised the text of Prajñāpanāsūtra printed in the edition under review. And only rarely have we consulted the commentary, etc. contained in it.
