પાલીતાણા રાજ્ય સાથેના કેટલાક ઝઘડા
વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદમાં ભાગ લેવા શિકાગે ગયા ત્યારે તેઓ માત્ર ગ્રેજયુએટ (B.A.)ની ડિગ્રી ધરાવતા હતા પણ અમેરિકાથી પહેલી અથવા બીજી વાર પાછી કરતી વખતે એમણે લંડનમાં કાયદા શાસ્ત્રને વિશેષ અભ્યાસ કરીને બાર-એટ-લે (બેરિસ્ટર)ની ડીગ્રી પ્રાપ્ત કરી લીધી હતી અને એમની પ્રેરણાથી અમેરિકામાં “ધ ગાંધી ફિલસફીકલ સોસાયટીની સ્થાપના થઈ હતી. તેમણે પોતાના કાયદાના જ્ઞાનને ઉપયોગ અર્થોપાર્જન માટે ભાગ્યે જ કર્યો હતો. એમની ધર્મનિષ્ઠા અને શાસનને મંજવતા પ્રશ્નોના ઉકેલની દિશામાં એમની સેવાભાવના અને ધગશ ખીલી નીકળતી હતી પણ ભાગ્યગ કંઈક એવો વિચિત્ર હતો કે એમની આ સેવાભાવનાને લાભ જૈન શાસનને લાંબા સમય સુધી ન મળી શક્યો અને તેઓ માત્ર ૩૭ વર્ષની ભર યુવાનવયે મુંબઈમાં તા. ૭-૮-૧૯૦૧ ના રોજ સ્વર્ગવાસ પામ્યા. આથી શાસનને એક સાચા
સેવકની મોટી બેટ પડી. ૪૦. આ ફેરીસ્ત (યાદી)ની નકલ પેઢીના દતરમાંથી મળી શકી નથી તેથી એ અહીં આપી
શકાઈ નથી. ૪૧. આનું મૂળ અંગ્રેજી લખાણ આ પ્રમાણે છે:
" Whatever may be the origin of the shrine, it seems to be solely under the control of the Jains, and its existence on the Hill in no way affects the interests of the Shravaks.” પાડવામાં આવ્યું હશે એવું અનુમાન થઈ શકે એમ છે. મૂળ અંગ્રેજીમાં બહાર પાડવામાં આવેલું જાહેરનામું આ પ્રમાણે હતું :
"As the continuance of the practice of going inside a Tunk on the Shetrunjay Hill with bare leather shoes and of smoking there in is found repugnant to the present sentiments of sanctity of the Jain Community, it is hereby notified for general information, with a view to meet the wishes and respect the religious sentiments of them, that no person shall enter a Tunk with bare leather shoes and smoke therein, and that no one shall go inside a Tunk with arms except for the arrest of criminals who may have taken shelter within any of the Tunks under a warrant issued by a state Magistrate.
“If any person is found to act against this order, he shall be
liable to a fine up to Rs. 100. Huzur Ofice,
