has explained this absence of the benediction. From this we can. safely infer that the first six gåthas of Jyotiskarandaka were not available to the commentator Malayagiri. Though these six gathas were not available to him, he in his commentary has given the gist; this point deserves our thoughtful consideration.
Jyotiskarandaka printed along with the Vṛtti already referred to consists of 376 gåthås, whereas the text of Jyotiskarandaka contained in the present publication consists of 405 gäthäs. Those places where are found Jyotiskarandaka gåthas not available in the former edition are noted by the editor in foot-notes.
As stated in the last gåtha (No. 405) of the present edition, the author of Jyotiskarandaka is Pädaliptasûri. Yet Ac. Malayagiri, the author of the Sanskrit vṛtti on Jyotiskarandaka, mentions him as a commentator (vṛttikāra) of Jyotiskarandaka. I recommend readers to refer to the opinion of Punyavijayaji, the editor of the present edition, in this regard. I have noted this opinion elsewhere in this Introduction.
The text of Jyotiskarandaka, printed along with the Sanskrit vrtti, is, at many places, fraught with unpardonable corruptions. All these corruptions stand corrected by the version of the text included in this volume.
On examining the Prakrit Tippanaka included in the present volume and the Sanskrit vrtti, we find that at some places in the text of Jyotişkarandaka there are different readings. From this we can safely conclude that the complete manuscript of this Prakrit Tippanaka was not available to the commentator Ac. Malayagiri. For instance, the author of Tippanaka mentions that there are 23 Prabhṛtas (Chapters), whereas Ac. Malayagiri mentions that there are 21 Prabhṛtas. (See p. 2, fn. 11).
The author of Prakrit Tippanaka presented the complete text of Jyotiskarandaka. Hence students, scholars and researchers may find in the text of Jyotiskarandaka given in this publication certain. usages that can be regarded as old from the standpoint of language.

No 98 in the present publication, viz. 'adha dussamãe kālo is not included in the body of the text of Jyotişkarandaka by the editor of the printed vṛtti. But he has accepted it as a quotation given in the vṛtti from some other work. See printed vṛtti p. 51, line 13. 2.
