A note on Jaina Āgamas by Late Muni Shri Punyavijayaji, prefaced to this Introduction, states that there are 22 Prakīrņakas. Of them, seventeen Prakīrnakas are accepted in this volume, leaving the five Prakärnakas viz. Ajivakappo, Ārähanăpadāgā, Amgavijjá, Siddhapāhuda and Jivavibhatti. Of the five Prakirņakas not accepted in this volume, Amgavijjā is a voluminous work, its extent is 9000 ślokas. It is critically edited by Muni Shri Punyavijayaji and published by Prakrit Text Society in 1957 A.D. Ārāhanāpaļāgā is grouped with other ārādhana-prakaranas and is to be printed with them in the second part which forms an appendix to this first part of the volume entitled 'Painnayasuttāim'. The remaining three, viz. Ajīvakappo, Siddhapähuda and Jivavibhatti are not accepted in either part of the volume. But the three Prakirnakas, viz. Āurapaccakkhāna [1] (pp. 160-166), Aurapaccakkhāna [2] (pp. 305-308) and Causaranapainnaya (pp. 309-311) are also accepted in this volume. Thus this volume contains in all 20 Prakırnakas. As
ceady stated, the number and the order of the Prakārnakasūtras were determined and noted down by Muni Shri Punyavijayaji in his own handwriting. Hence whatever difference regarding the number and the order, we find here must have some reason according to him, but we have not come across any note regarding it. So it is very difficult for me to explain it.
The svetāmbara Mūrtipūjaka tradition maintains that there are 45 Āgamas. Adding 10 Prakīrnakas to 35 works consisting of Angas, Upangas etc., the number 45 of the Agamas is arrived at. As stated earlier, we have no tradition of the fixed established
1. The Vicārasäraprakarana composed by Āc. Pradyumnasūriji in the 14th
century of the Vikrama Era enumerates 45 Ágamas but it does not clearly mention the ten Prakirņakasūtras. It is edited by Muni Shri Manikyasagarji and published by Agamodaya Samiti in 1923 A.D.
