________________ FOREWORD It gives me immense pleasure, to place before the students and scholors who are interested in jain cananical literture, the critical edition of the Sthananga-Sutra with the oldest available Sanskrit commentary by Achrya Abhaydavsuri in Vikrama-Samvat 1120. 49 The text of the Sthananga-Sutra critically edited by us was already publised by Mahavir Jain Vidyalaya in 1985 A.D. with variant readings in foot-notes and with many appendices etc. The same text has been adopted here, though some slight changes have been done where it was important, moreover an old palm-leaf manuscript was found in Bhandarkar Oriental Reserach Institute, Pune, which is also consulted. In some cases it is unique. We have done some changes in the text according to this ms. where it was quite necessary. Some variant readings have been given in the foot-notes from the same as भां० । To understand the text, the commentary is most necessary. So we have added the commentary composed by Acharya Sri Abhayadevsūri in Vikrama Samvat 1120. This is the oldest commentary. AbhayadevSuri commented on nine Angasūtras, Viz. So he is well-known नवाङ्गीटीकाकार. He is reputed as a great authority. The स्थानाङ्ग is devided in ten Adhyayanas. To understand the text, з quotes many verses or words from other authentic works, hence this commentary is like an occon. As this is a very big work, we think to publish it in four parts. The first part will cantain 1-3 adhyayanas, the second part 4-6 adhyayanas, the third part 7-9 adhyayanas, the fourth tenth adhyayaand and many appendices.
