INTRODUCTION
The reading which is accepted by the authors of the Cūrni and Pāiyatīkā is yielded by ms. only. Refer to the footnote 11 (p. 114).
The readings accepted by the author of the Paiyațīkā and yielded by ms. only are noted in the foot-notes 6 (p. 146), 6 (p. 167), 24 (p. 172), 9 (p. 198), 10 (p. 216), 19 (p. 245) and 3 (p. 246).
The variants mentioned in the Päiyatīkā and yielded by ms. only are noted in footnotes 19 (p. 144), 21 (p. 154), 12 (p. 157), 5 (p. 200) and 9 (p. 203).
This ms. uses a śruti in a manner which is peculiar to it. All these instances are noted by us elsewhere in this volume.
go- This is a paper ms. It belongs to Muni Shri Punyavijayaji's collection preserved in the L.D. Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad 9. It bears No. 5464. It contains 42 folios. Folios 1-3 have 13 lines per side, folios 4-42 have 15 lines per side. In the middle of each folio there is a blank portion which gives rise to a decorative figure. Each line contains 47 to 55 letters. At the end there is no colophon by the copyist. On the basis of the script, size, etc., we can infer that it should have been written in the 16th century V.S. The script is excellent and the condition is good. Its size is 26 cms. x 11.3 cms.
19 - This is a paper ms. It belongs to the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Collection preserved in the L. D. Institute of Indology. It bears No. 338. It has 48 folios, 15 lines per side and 41 to 49 letters per line. All the folios have blank portion in the centre. This blank portion gives rise to a decorative design. The script is excellent. The size is 26 cms. x 11 cms. The condition is good. At the instance of Shri Ratnamandana, a pupil of Shri Surasundarasuri of Tapagaccha, Shri Karmaņa Shetha, a resident of Anahilapura Pätan, got the Agama works copied. He got this ms. of the Uttarādhyayanasūtra copied by the copysit named 'Ambā' on Friday, the fifteenth day of the bright half of Māgha, 1525 V.S. Karmana Shetha bore all the expenditure of the collective pilgrimage (yátrāsangha) to Siddhācala, Girnāra, Abu and Jirāulātirtha, and earned the title of 'sanghapati' ('Leader of the Collective Pilgrimage'). The name of his wife was Karmādevī. They were four brothers: 1. Varasimgha, 2. Narasimgha, 3. Karmaņa, and 4. Naradeva. The name of their father was 'Rākā' Shetha and the name of their mother was 'Puri' Shethâni. The name of their grand-father was 'Sangā' Shetha. All this information is contained in the colophon written on the second side of folio 48. For the text of the colophon refer to Gujarati Introduction,
