FOREWORD
In the Scriptures, 10 the Dvadasängi is also designated by the term 'ganipitaka'. As the twelve Āgamas, viz. the Acāra, the Sütrakrta, the Sthāna, etc., are conceived as parts of the body of the Srutapuruşa, 11 they are called 'Anga' sūtras, as for example, 1. the Acārăngasūtra, 2. the SūtrakȚtängasūtra, 3. the Sthānāngasūtra, etc. And the Sūtrakstāngasūtra is accorded the second place in the Dvidaśāngi (a group of twelve Anga works).
Title : In the Niryukti commentary on the Sūtrakrtänga, composed by Bhadrabāhusvāmī who was proficient in fourteen Pūrvas12, three Prakrit titles are indicated. They are: "Sūtagadam', 'Suttagadań' and 'Sūyagadam. The Sanskrit renderings of these titles are 'sūtakrtam', 'sūtrakrtam', 'sūcākrtam' respectively.13 The author of the Cūrņi and Śīlācārya, the author of the Vștti, have rightly and clearly explained their meanings. But in the Svetāmbara tradition the Prakrit title "Sūyagada' and the Sanskrit title "Sūtrakrtam' are prevalent. The title "Sūyagada' is found mentioned in the Agamas, viz. the Samavāyānga, the Nandisūtra, etc. Though the etymological meaning of the word 'sūyagada' is applicable to other Anga sūtras too, by convention the word 'sūyagada' (sūtrakrta) denotes the second Angasutra only. This is clearly stated in the Nandīvrtti etc.14
10. This title occurs in the Nandisutra, etc. 11. "Pāyadugar 2 jamghorū 2 + 2 gātadugaddham 2 tu do ya bāhuyo 2
gīvā 1 siram 1 ca puriso bārasa-argo suyavisittho //-1//" This gathā is found in the Nandicūrņi (p. 67). It also occurs in Haribhadra's Vrtti on the Nandisutra (p. 69), the only difference being the variant 'gātadduyagam'. Malayagiri's explanation of this gathā is : "iha puruşasya dvādaśa angāni bhavanti, tadyatha - dvau padau, dve janghe, dve ūruņi, dve gātrārdhe, dvau bahu, griva siraś ca / evam śrutarūpasyāpi paramapuruşasya ācārādini dvādaśa angani kramena veditavyāni /... śrutapuruşasya angeşu praviştam angabhāvena vyavasthitam ity arthan / yat punar etasyaiva dvādaśāngātmakasya śrutapuruşasya vyatirekena sthitam - angabahyatvena vyavasthitam tad anangapraviştam"-p. 203. Śricandrasuri in his Nandițippaņaka writes: "gāyadugaddham tu iti
pūrva-paścimorahprsthirūpam" (p. 161). 12. Refer to the Prastāvanā to the present edition of the Sūtrakstanga,
p. 1, fn. 1. 13. According to the Sūtrakrtānganiryuktigăthā, viz., "soūna jinavaramatam
ganahāri kau takkhaovasamanajjhavasāmena kayaṁ suttamiņam tena sūyagadam || 18 ||” the Sanskrit rendering 'śrutakstam' or śrutvā kệtam' is also possibly intended. Even the twelfth Anga Drstivāda had five divisions, viz., Parikarma, Sutra, Purvagata, Anuyoga and Culikā. "Se kim tam ditthivãe? se samāsao pamcavihe pannatte, tam jahā 1. Parikamme, 2. Suttăim, 3. Puvvagae, 4. Aņuoge, 5. Cūliya" - Nandisūtra 98. Even in the Buddhist works there occur titles 'Suttapiţakam, Suttanipato'. It is to be noted that here the term 'sutra' is conventionally used to denote a particular book (grantha).
