FOREWORD
By the grace of Supreme Soul and spiritual teachers I am able to present before the lovers of Jaina Āgamas the critical edition of the Sūtrakrtāngasūtra, the second of the twelve Anga works. While preparing this critical edition, I utilized many old manuscripts and scrutinized various readings yielded by them.
After having attained omniscience Lord Mahāvīra (= Vardhamāna) commenced preaching Religion. At Apăpă town in Mahasena Grove he delivered his first sermon. Closely following his preachings, Indrabhūti Gautama and others, the direct principal disciples of his, composed twelve Angasūtras. They are as follows:
Prakrit Title 1. Āyāro 2. Sūyagado 3. Thānań 4. Samavão 5. Viyahapannatti2 6. Ņāyādhammakahão8 7. Uvāsagadasão 8. Astagadadasão 9. Anuttarovavāiyadasão 10. Panhåvägaranaim 11. Vivāgasuyamo 12. Diţthivão
Sanskrit Title Ācārah Sūtrakrtam Sthanam Samavāyaḥ Vyākhyāprajñaptih Jñatadharmakathän Upāsakadaśah AntakȚddaśāḥ Anuttaraupapātikadaśāḥ Praśnavyākaranam Vipäkaśrutam? 8D?stivādaho
1. Titles given here are according to the Nandisūtra. 2. It is also known by the title 'Bhagavati'. 3. The reading "nähadhammakahā' is available in the Digambara works like
the Jayadhavalā (p. 114). This title occurs in the Tattvärthabhāşya (I. 20). But in the Haribhadriya Vștti on the Nandisutra and other works, the title Iñatādharmakathah'
is mentioned. 5. In the Jayadhavalā (p. 119), etc., we come across the title 'Panha
vayaranam'. 6. In the Jayadhavală (p. 120), etc., there occurs the title 'Vivāgasuttam'. 7. The Tattvārthabhāşya (I. 20), etc., mention the title 'Vipākasūtram'. 8. In the Tattvārthabhāşya (I. 20) there occurs the title 'Drstipāta'. 9. The twelfth Angasūtra entitled 'Drsţivada' has been lost to us since
long. But when it was extant it was as vast as an ocean. It had five divisions, viz., (1) Parikarma, (2) Sūtrāni, (3) Pūrvagatam, (4) Cülikā, and (5) Prathamānuyoga. Among these five divisions, the Pūrvagata division contained fourteen Purvas beginning with Utpadapūrva ; each succeeding Pūrva was more extensive than the immediately preceding one.
