Page #1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ A Light, a Guide, a Seer Piety Incarnation Jain Bharati Mahattra Sadhvi Shri Mrigavati Ji Maharaj (1926-1986) A Compendium Page #2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Our Guiding Spirits Jain Bharati Mahattra Sadhvi Shri Mrigavati Ji and most revered Sadhvi Shri Sujyeshtha Ji Jain Education Interna Maharaj Shri-Mrigavati Shri Jiwith pious ensemblew.jainelibrary.org Page #3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Face reveals the sublimity within Broad resplendent forehead, innocent gentleness, piteous eyes, roselike ever beaming face, affectionshowering glances, firm and hopeful about holy Indian cultural traditions, clad in spotless white Khadi, the first appearance of Sadhvi ji Maharaj imparted immense peace to the beholder. H. H. Maharaj ji possessed such a spiritual power as attracted irresistibly as a magnet every human being. The appearance was sublime and magnetic. Sermons exerted magical influence on listeners. Her personality was a unigue blend of tenderness and sympathy on one hand and courage and discretion on the other hand. Like Bharti Devi and Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, she never gave shelter to injustice in any form. Man is a rational being and the cause of his incessant progress lies in his capacity to imbibe thoughts and share them with others. Sadhvi Maharaj ji undertook the task of reconstruction by sheer force of thoughts; she inspired youths; gave new direction to womenfolk; showed the righteous path to the human being; brought out the religion out of the confinement of rituals and temples to the practical life of man; got established many institutions through her inspiration. She was an institution in herself--institution of country's liberation, institution of the human liberation, institution of religion, knowledge and right judgement, institution of intellect and culture. Sweet voice, forceful language, humility and affectionateness were the basic qualities of her personality. The possessed the wealth of lustrous renunciation, unique talent in the tradition of Gargi and sobriety of Matrayee and devotion to Guru like Sahjobai and Muktabai. She owned wealth of truth, good conduct and five great solemn pledges. She doled out... this wealth quite liberally. She returned to society * millionfold whatever she got from society. Courage of Page #4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Guru Atam, foresight of Guru Vallabh and devotion to Guru of Guru Samuder-the confluence of the three found manifestation in her personality. She possessed the befitting quality of Mahatma-the qualities of taking decisions even in the most tiring and difficult circumstances. Motilal Nehru once said, "There are some people who work while there are others who want to grab the credit". Sadhvi ji belonged to the former category of people who are always busy in their work. Today when the values of life are uncertain, man i guided by ego, young people lack the creative direction, man is helplessly caught in the snares of bad traditions and vices, man is restless in the poisonous atmosphere of Pancham Kal, she proved to be a dawn to dispel the darkness surrounding man. She forged a clear path for man to walk on, a path bearing the footprints of great men. This path is both thorny and fragrant. This is not covered with flowers but it gives off soul's sweet fragrance. Here there are no musical cascades but man himself becomes a cascade. The world survives, man faces joys and sorrows with perfect calmness and despair changes into hope as a result of sacrifices of holy saints like her, life becomes worth living. She gave respect to every human being. She never rested till she accomplished the task. The pledge fulfilment of mission at the cost of the body had become a part and parcel of her life. That is why she always achieved success She practised what she preached. She never held out any false assurance to anybody. She always respected men of letters, artistes and scholars. Helping the Jains, widows, the helpless, the orphans and the students secretly was her daily routine. She was above the narrow walls of province, sex, race or religion. In reality, the credit of making her an embodiment of virtues and goodness goes to her mother Guru Sadhvi Sheelwati ji Maharaj. The untimely leaving behind the mortal of Sadhvi Shri Mrigavati ji-the unique luminary, devoted spiritual Page #5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ is guide and the sole spirit behind the Vallabh Samarak irreparable loss not only to Jain Jagat but also to the whole peace-loving societies of various kinds. SERRA Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Imprints of a Spiritual Trail Ms. June L. Fog of Cold Spring Harbour, New York spent a month as a shravika receiving and imbibing the hoary spirituality of Jainism at Vallabh Smarak, Delhi as an ardent disciple of Maharaj Shri Mrigavati ji. e The American housewife who fell under the aura of Maharaj Shri in 1976 recounts the indelible impressions about Maharaj Shri who lovingly rechristened her as Janki'. Her tribute in the fond memory of her 'Spiritual Mentor' is reproduced below. . 14 It is difficult for me when I think of Shree Mrigavati ji in an earthly way and not feel a great surge of personal grief, knowing in this earthly form, I shall not see her again or be with her again. But when I think of the Maharaj in a spiritual way I feel she is very much herewith us, her divine spirit enduring. How very lucky we are, you and me, for having known her--to have been so close to her and been touched by her inestimable love! www.white Mobil I first met Maharaj Shree Mrigavati Ji in 1976 on a spiritual pilgrimage to India. My dear friend, Raj Kumar Jain took me to her, but I did not know then what a great Page #25 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ influence and inspiration she was to have on my life. What endeared me to her so thoroughly was that on my second fortuitous meeting in 1982, as I entered into her presence, she looked at me in the eyes clearly, squarely and lovingly and said, "I am not perfect!" That's all. I realised she admitted her humanness and her humbleness and her honesty touched me very deeply. For me then she was a fellow traveller, guru and friend. Yes, I bow to you, Beloved Blessed Soul. I am so deeply grateful, sincerely appreciative, thanking you ever in my heart for the trust you reposed on me, for helping me so greatly to see. I bow down. Natheyna Vandami ! In anything I do or think, I see her as my guide, : my mentor and my inspiration. I try to believe that she is at my side still and that she is with you as well and with all those who held her in such great esteem. Her radiant loving smile comes to my memory even now as I write and my heart is so warmed and filled to bursting. Perhaps even now she is nudgeing each one of us to do our best and accept all that comes our way. Her love was so pure and unconditional. She loved each as if they were the only one. She once said to me "Love all equally, do for each equally, give to each equally". She saw beyond the persona -the mask. She helped me to see me, to love myself as I am, to see myself, thereby enabling me to love all. Her belief in me and her love gave me back myself self-respect and assurance, thereby to stand tall and accept anything and all that comes my way. She helped me and, I am sure, many by her unparalleled exemplary behaviour. She helped me remove my own doubts and Page #26 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ restored my faith for all time in the Jaina path. Her selfless, benevolent, inspiring life stands now as a beacon for all to follow. When darkness comes, as it will, I know the light is there. I do most humbly stand ever ready to ..serve and prayerfully seek her benign support that I may conclude my life in such an exemplary manner. My heart is so warmed again when I look back at the time. I was so ill and remember how she so lovingly and compassionately held me in her arms, and yet she herself was so ill. And how she sat all day long to help raise funds for the completion of the samarak, again rising above her own physical pain. Oh Maharaj that we could rise to such heights! I can hear God saying "Well done! Mrigvati, well done !" She has passed her divine legacy on to us, but especially to Shree Maharaj Suvrataji, Shree Sujyesha and Shree Supragya. TAWARAN NOMS AS REB Though there is no paucity of epithets in the dictionary to give expression to the extra-ordinary personality and achievements of Her Holiness Shri Mrigavati Ji Maharaj yet the touching experiences of her nature and impressions beggar description. More than two decades have elapsed when I got the opportunity to see and listen to Revered Mahattra Ji for the first time. Prior to this, she, with the farsighted and constructive co-operation of Seth Kasturbhai, had accomplished in 1960-62, the task of study of Jain 'Agams' and Sanskrit and Prakrit literature. I listened to and conversed with her and realised that I was face to face with an embodiment of inspiration. The seemed to have imbibed the fundamental values of Indian intellect. Not only her learning but also her philosophy of life, her faith in man, her capacity to synthesise, and her will power, created celestial and glorious inspiration that was a tonic to spiritual courage and faith. ANDRAWAT www . Though she was a Shwetambar Jain saint, there was era 3 no narrow-mindedness in her sermons, her philosophy of life, her way of organising things and her unfathomed ocean of pity. Hers was of life of constant devotion and mission . Page #28 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ RENURUL for the happiness of human beings. In our scriptures, the saints have described the earth as the mother and themselves her sons and this comprehensive concept is summed up in the mantra ; The earth is an abode sheltering all forms of religion. Seen in the intellectual and spiritual contexts, great Hindi poet, Prasad's words may be aptly borrowed for paying homage to Mahattra Mrigavati Ji : Oh Goddess ! Large-hearted, passionless, embodiment of mothe, hood, Well-wisher of all I Ye sublime, suffer for the sins of others, Spreading balmy words, you dwell in the abode of for giveness. When I, alongwith Shri V. S. Jain, went for the first time to see her, I had the opportunity to know her power of eloquence, her progressive, revolutionary and social vision and her imaginative organizational capacity. Her speech was adorned with the three gems of learning, philosophy and character. Her address was an awakening call. After many years, fortunately, respected Pratapbhai Bhogilal provided me an unforgettable opportunity to be in her ins. piring proximity. Many topics were discussed. I availed the opportunity of being enlightened on several of her activities and achievements. Even at that time she did not enjoy a normal health, yet there was no trace of ill-health in her blessingful smile, enthusiasm and vitality. The wore pure white Khadi. Her life of austerity and meditation was woven RESORERIA Page #29 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ with texture of simplicity and innocence. The performed quite naturally all the austere rituals enjoined upon a Jain saint and inspired her disciples to follow suit. Her nature evinced a natural sweetness, immensity and humanity. The was a great scholar, but there was no affectation, no pretension in her scholarship. She had deep reverence for knowledge. Her heart was brimmed with deep respect for thinkers, artistes, men of letters and the scholars of Indian traditions and culture. I remember with what great care and endeavour she got collected and classified the ancient manuscripts under her own supervision at Shri Vallabh Smarak, Delhi and when I was there, she, with rare feelings of affection, opened before me the manuscripts kept safe in different almirahs. In this noble mission, she imparted great training and still greater inspiration to her disciples. It is really a great experience to see her interest in these activities. It is. the results of her imagination and power of determination that today we see the inauguration of Shri Vallabh Smarak, clustered with magnificent temples- blessed Upashryas at Delhi. Showering her great affection on me, she herself explained to ma her dreams about the planning along the different pathways on the campus. Indeed it was a blessed moment because I was visualising how vast, manysided end perfect her dreams were This Shri Vallabh Smarak in the form of great achievement of Mahattra Shri Mrigavati Ji's devoted missionary life will always remind us of her personality and performance, because every inch of its soil, every building and hall, evey idol and stone, spiritual pursuit and efficiency are fragrant with her philosophy of life and will ever remain so. Page #30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ The Great Sadhvi Shri Mrigavati Ji's life tenure extended only over six decades, out of which she spent 48 years as a Jain sadhvi. This blessed daughter of Lala Shri Dungarsibhai Sanghvi was born in Saurashtra. At the age of 12 she received 'diksha' from her own worldly mother, Kadhvi Ji Shri Shilvati Shri Ji Maharaj and became the disciple of Jain Acharya Shri Vallabh Surishwarji Maharaj. With the courtesy Pt. Shri Sukhlal Ji, Pt. Shri Bechardass Ji and Pt. Shri Dalsukhbhai Mala Vryan, she practised Jain Agams' and made a comparative study of Jain, Baudh and Vedic traditions. CONSTANT The tasks of construction and installation through her inspiration and blessings are numerous. The concrete monuments of Shri Mrigavati Ji Maharaj's unique and boundless glory stand glacefully at many places like Ludhiana, Kangra, Chandigarh, Malerkotla Sardhana, Raikot, Jagadhri, Agra, Mujjafarnagar, Jharia, Daharu, Chlkmangloor, Ambala, Delhi, Bombay and Mysore. mmmmmm A The deeds for the welfare of the entire humanity accomplished through Mahattra's sermons and contacts are the things of glory for the Jain society. Several hospitals schools and colleges, dispensaries, city-improvement plans and plans for rendering help to the needy, industrial centres, dharam- shalas, guest houses and development of places of pilgrimage, gaushalas, and activities for helping the famine sufferers are the results of her inspiration. ON NOV Page #31 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Mahattra Sadhvi Shri Mrigavati Ji's personality was historic, revolutionary and versatile. She was an eternal and ceaseless source of inspiration and her life and death were the symbol of the march of consciousness on earth. Her achievements and the limitless potentality dormant in these achievements have been enshrined for ever in a temple of glory in the mind of human society. I pay my homage to the Holy memory of Revered Mahattra Ji and believing her inspiration and noble determination as unforgettable, pious and precious inheritance, I offer my humble tributes. -Dr. Laxmi Mall Singhvi Page #32 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Chaturmas 1. Without practical life our mind is a two-legged drawer. 2. Delivering sermons is not a holy man's profession but his meditation. 3. We are in need of quality. Quantity is of secondary consideration. 4. Easy fulfilment of need is natural; begging for it is degeneration, sharing the means with others is culture ; What is available easily is sweet and pure milk. What begging brings is an ordinary water. What is grabbed is nothing but blood. SAMSO Page #33 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 5. The students who remain undisturbed even if a large army passes by can alone acquire knowledge. 10. Man, attain whatever stage in life you aspire to. We alone are to decide what we are to be. 11.
