INTRODUCTION THE PARLIAMENT OF THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS 1. 100 years ago - 1893 The first Parliament of the World's religions was held at Chicago in 1893 as a part of World's Columbian Exposition. It was the first meeting of the representatives of the major religions in the history of the world. About four hundred persons spoke about their faiths to audiences of four thousand or more. The parliament marked the beginning of interfaith dialouge in the modern world. Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrainism trace their beginings in the west to their participation in the parliament. Hundred years ago the Parliament was more of a familiarisation and introduction of religions. The Jain Representation A Jain Acharya Shri Vijayanandsuri (popularly known as Atmaramji) was invited to attend the parliament to represent the Jains. The rules of the conduct of Sadhus prevented the Acharya from going to Chicago. He deputed Shri Virchand Raghavji Gandhi (VRG) to fulfil the mission. VRG was the first honorary secretary of Jain Association of India. He travelled by boat with Swami Vivekanandji and others. VRG gave several lectures on Jainism at various cities in USA after the conference. 2. 100 years after - 1993 The centennial Parliament is scheduled for nine days from Saturday 28th August to Sunday 5th September, 1993. It will bring together leaders and representatives of the World's faiths, experts on economic, social, scientific, environmental and political issues, and spiritual pilgrims from all over the globe. The centennial celebrations in 1993 will be a historic event. * Encourage the spirit of harmony and to celebrate with openness and mutual respect, the rich diversity of religion. * Renew the role of religions of the world in relation to personal spiritual growth and the challenges facing the global community. * Develop and encourage interfaith groups and programmes which will carry the spirit of the Parliament into the twenty-first century. *Total attendance over 9 days period will exceed 50.000. It will be a highly publicised event of the century of muti-faith get togethers. Three important events are to take place in Chicago in 1993 and it should be a pride for all the Jains in the world and in particular for the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago and the Federation of the Jain Associations of North America. These are: 1. Pratishtha Mahotsav of the Jain Derasar in Chicago - June 1993 2. Centennial celebrations of the World Parliament of Religions held in 1893 3. Launching of the first book of Jain Scriptures 'Tattvaratha Sutra' II. So far five Jain Organisations have registered to participate in the centennial celebrations at Chicago. At a meeting held in Chicago on Friday 13th November, 1992 between Jain Society of Metroploitan Chicago, Federation of Jain Associations in North America and the Institute of Jainology it was unanimously agreed that the Jains throughout the world should unite and partcipate under the banner of one name THE JAINS. Such a unity would not only be economical but will crerate a desired impact in promoting the Jain philosophy. It was further agreed that as the cosponsors will not have any special priveleges and as the individual registration in personal capacity was still mandatory, all efforts should be made to convince the other potential Jain institutions not to register as cosponsors. III. Members present at this meeting agreed as follows: 1. Jains throughout the world should unite and pull their resources together for best presentation and maximum impact. 2. Jain Society of Metroploitan Chicago to be the HOST SOCIETY for the delegates who attends under the banner of THE JAINS. 3. Approved the budget of US$50,000 to meet the costs of scholars, exhibition, and donations to the World Parliament of Religions. (see page 8 for details). 4. After primary and secondary education at Bhavnagar, he joined Elphinstone College in Bombay and graduated with honours. He mastered fourteen languages and at the age of 21 he became the first honorary secretary of the Jain Association of India VRG was a great exponent of Indian culture and religion, besides being a brilliant scholar of Jainism. His speeches at the parliament of World Religions at Chicago in 1893 echoed the true spirit and culture of India. Hel was accorded a warm reception and shown highest appreciation from clubs. literary and church societies, philosophical branches and spiritual associations in USA. He impressed the American public about the Jain religion as a rational religion and speeches received extensive publications in several leading news papers in USA. He corrected the false, twisted and perverse impression of India as being the land of Maharajahs, tigers and cobras. VRG stayed in USA for about two years and visited several cities. He returned to USA twice and in 1896 organised a ship load of grain and about Rs.40,000 cash for famine relief in India. He also visited England, France, Germany and other places in Europe. Herbert Warren studied Jainism under VRG. He qualified as Barrister in London at one of the Inns of the Court. SOME OF THE EXTRACTS OF COMMENTS FROM NEWPAPERS AND INDIVIDUALS IN USA: 1. Now here is VRG, the Jain, whom you well know in Bombay. This man never takes anything but pure vegetables even in this terribly cold climate and tooth and nail tries to defend his countrymen and religion. The people of this country like him very well. Letter written by Vivekanandji to Shri Diwanji November 1894 2. These lectures are instructive to both, old and young, and should be seen and heard all over America. The Rochester Herald - October 3, 1893 3. His lecture was a most scholarly production both in matter and form, and showed a thorough grasp of oriental philosophy. Rev. R.A.White, Chicago 4. It was rarely, if ever, been my good fortune to meet a man whose reading and cluture have been so wide and varied, and who, withal, has so sweet, sincere and teachable a spirit as Mr. Gandhi. Here the visitor saw the true Oriental idea of ornamentation in architecture such as developed in the Golden Doorway of the Transportation Building further southward on the grounds, and it cannot be denied that the Asian decoration was worthy of the praise of its poets, nor should it be forgotten that gollen doorways are for tropical climates, and ill-fitted to the bitter blasts and frosts of North America. The colors on the Indian Railing were striking and harmonious; the celebrated Taj Mahal at Agra having served as an example to the builder. The structure was rectangular, eighty by sixty feet, and its man room was surrounded with a gallery in which goods were displayed. The main entrance was through a lofty arch surmounted by minarets which also rose from the corners of the edifice. Under the por al wis a wide space, making a hemicycle similar to the one at the south end of the Electricity Building. The Indian Building, which cost $15, was hailt as a bazar in which Mr. S. J. Tellery, one of the leading East Indian traders, was to carry on his trade under the patronage of the mative rulers of Hyderabad, Joolpoor, l'atteeala, Kapoorthella, Mahoor, Jheend, Kerowlee and Kutch. The building was redolent with sandalwood, and the natives who served Page #25 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ SA Jain Education Interational 2010_03 Jain Education Intermational 2010_03 UDHE Interior of the East Indian Building + Chicago, Illonois - 1893 World's Columbian Exposition The Parliament of Religions . - it HN . .
