The cover of this issue recognizes the ardent efforts made by the Jain Center of Northern California and Jain Society of Detroit for further establishing Jainism in North America. JAIN DIGEST also congratulates the JAINA Executive Committee for the grand success of JAINA Patrons project under the leadership of Dr. Dhirajbhai Shah. I would like to point out to you that in the preference criteria your inclusion of "Color of Skin" is extremely prejudicial. I am not at all clear why Jains as a whole would subscribe to matching preferences for skin tone. I am equally surprised that a non-profit organization in the USA would allow such criteria to be published. I would strongly suggest that you publish an apology to all Jains for even suggesting skin tone be a criteria and further make available your resources to eliminate such criteria from being practiced. Response-Ability It is heartening to read President Dr. Dhiraj Shah's message in Fall 1997 issue of JAIN DIGEST. He has a pragmatic approach for the goals he initiated and to be achieved. HEADQUARTERS NEWS MILESTONES FOR THE Millennium Bhumi Pujan for Jain Bhawan Jain Center of Northen California The Jain Centre of Northern California celebrated the Bhumi Pujan ceremony on a rainy morning of November 15th, 1997, with great devotion, splendor and gaiety. The event marked an auspicious beginning of the construction of the first Jain Bhawan in the San Francisco Bay area. The ceremony was graced by spiritual leaders Shri Jinchandraji and Shri Amrendramuni. The puja rituals were performed by Dr. Pankaj and Hansa Vyas, in the presence of city dignitaries-Mayor Mr. Henry Mannayan, Santa Clara Country Supervisor, Mr. Pete McHugh, City Manager Mr. Greg Larsen and 500 plus devotees. Dr. Pravin Jain, the temple committee President and Chairman of the Jain Center of Northern California, described the day's ceremonies as "once in a life time" occasion. "I pray that we build a temple where we can all feel love and brotherhood, and hope that everyone's appetite for inner peace will be fulfilled". Although the Bhawan site was flooded with ankle deep water from early morning rain, the high spirits of attendees and guests enabled timely conclusion of scheduled events as planned. Henry Mannayan, Mayor of Milpitas, complemented the Jain community on their high spirits despite the weather, and described rain itself as a blessing sent from Heaven to purify the land. He added that the temple would embody the values of family community and freedom of religion-qualities abundant in Milpitas, a city of diversity. The sun broke through at a very successful conclusion of a Bhumi Pujan. After the puja the chanting congregation lead a procession to a nearby Swami Narayan temple followed by a series of lectures, reading of messages including one from the President of JAINA, Dr. Dhiraj Shah, congratulating the Sangh and wishing them all the best on this most auspicious day. After some fund raising activities the congregation was treated to discourses by Shri Jinchandraji Maharaj, Shri Amrendramuni, Samani Sanmatiprajnaji and Samani Prasannaprajnaji. The two storey Jain Bhawan will house a temple and a bhakti room on the second level and a meeting hall, classroom, library, kitchen and dining hall on the first level. The JCNC intend to build a unique landmark for Jains across the United States, Canada and the rest of the world. For information on the temple and for donations please contact JCNC at www.jcnc.org or Pravin Jain at 408/559-6987. 4/JAIN DIGEST WINTER 1997 Bricklaying Ceremony in Detroit, MI The Jain Society of Greater Detroit celebrated brick laying ceremony at their temple site on Saturday, September 27, 1997. The Detroit temple is under construction and the society wanted all of their members' participation in giving a symbolic hand in building the "Jinalaya". The event was a spectacular success with wholehearted support from the society members as well as excellent weather. During the ceremony, over 160 families (more than 400 individuals) had an opportunity to place a brick on the northwest corner side wall of the temple in construction. A picture was taken of every family as a remembrance of this unique celebration. Next door, the temple house was kept open for puja, darshan, and bhaktibhav. Everyone was treated to refreshments after the pro gram. The Pratishtha Mahotsav program will start on Saturday, June 27, 1998, and end on Monday, July 6, with a 'Dwar Opening' ceremony. The Pratishtha will take place on Sunday, July 5, 1998. The Jain Society of Greater Detroit requests the Jain community at large to plan their 1998 July 4 weekend for attending our Pratishtha Mahotsav. We will be providing detailed information on the Pratishtha Mahotsav to all Jain Centers as they are finalized. We will publish it also in the March and June 1998 JAIN DIGEST. Cleveland Jain Sangh Celebrates Mahavir Nirvana Day Dr. Dhiraj Shah, President of JAINA, attended the "Mahavir Nirvana Celebration" on November 2. More than 300 people attended the gathering. Dr. Shah gave a very inspiring talk and encouraged the Cleveland Jain Sangh to build their Non-Sectarian temple, pathshala and Sthanak as soon as possible. Dr. Jagat Jain, past President of JAINA also addressed the gathering and urged the same. Both of them met the leaders of Cleveland Jain Sangh and visited prospective sites for a temple. Dr. Shah promised the sangh all the help from JAINA. After Dr. Shah's inspiring talk, one wellknown Jain leader of Sangh came forward and offered $100,000 for the temple, but wanted to remain anonymous. Cleveland is fortunate to have such donors and this action should encourage all others to come forward and not wait for everyone else.

JAINA Executive Committee Meets at Siddhachalam JAINA'S newly elected executive committee's Ist meeting was held at Siddhachalam on Oct 4th. President Dhirajbhai uplifted everyone's spirits by pronouncing the JAINA Patron program a grand success. 235 Jains from all over North America opened their wallets and pledged $65,000 to this most essential project. Dhirajbhai reported that in the last 90 days he visited 6 Jain centers (New York, Boston, North Jersey, Atlanta, Orlando and Siddhachalam). During his trip to Orlando, he helped that center raise $80,000 for building their new temple. A donation of a 2-acre plot has brought their dream closer to reality. In this meeting the E.C. agreed that JAINA would act as a conduit for collecting donations on behalf of Shree Virchand Raghavaji Scholarship fund. E.C. appointed Pramodaben Chitrabhanu (JMIC), Shantibhai Shah (President of Siddhachalam), Dr. Bipin Parikh (Chicago), Rajiv Pandya (youth member), Virendra Shah (L.A.) and Ramesh Jain (Toronto) as JAINA Directors at large. New chairpersons were appointed for the following committees. Kamlesh Amin, who has been helping JAINA for the past 3 months at no cost, was approved for that position (Tel/Fax: 716/636-5342). JAINA is exploring a proposal for a pilgrimage to Jain Tirths in India during Dec. '98 with the help of Bharatiya Jain Sanghathan. Dr. Pandya proposed to send to all the Patrons and the members of Charitable Trust, as a souvenir, a wonderful book on Jain Art titled "Peaceful Liberators" if he can get enough copies. He also proposed to sponsor in cooperation with Education Committee a book project on fundamentals of Jainism to be supervised by Pravin Shah for every Jainfamily in North America. Pravinbhai will also work with education committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Prem Gada and prepare a proposal for an essay competition every year before Mahavir Jayanti for children inthree age categories see page 14). JAIN DIGEST in the future will allocate a page for the news of Pathshalas. Dr. Subhash Jain of University of Connecticut was appointed as an editor of feature articles in JAIN DIGEST for one year. Sobhagya Khamesra, and Gyan Chand Jain of Toronto presented financial report of the 9th JAINA Convention. The good news from Toronto was that the convention has surplus of approxi mately $100,000 and they have allocated $25,000 of that to JAINA'S general fund. They presented JAINA a check in the amount of $7,215 on account. Tulsa Jain Sangh (Tulsa, Oklahoma) has embarked upon building their new Jain temple and requested JAINA's help. JAINA Charitable trust agreed to a grant of $5,000 and JAINA will publicize their need through JAIN DIGEST and JAINA Focus to bring their dream to reality. Members felt that each center should try to include news of JAINA in their newsletters. JAINA FOR ALL AND ALL FOR JAINA! Board of Directors meets at Siddhachalam As is our tradition, JAINA's Board of Directors and Presidents of all 54 Jain Centers were invited to Siddhachalam on October 4 for the annual meeting. This annual meeting of JAINA always takes place during first weekend in October when Siddhachalam celebrates Kshamapna Day and Ahimsa Day. This informal gathering of JAINA board members and trustees of Siddhachalam permits dialogue between Siddhachalam, the only Tirth in North America and JAINA, the only voice of 80,000 plus Jains on this continent. This wonderful idea of combined meeting was suggested by Acharya Sushil Kumarji to JAINA in 1992 and it has served every one very well. Dhirajbhai talked about the vitality of JAINA. In three months since this present committee has been elected to serve, we have published first issue of JAIN DIGEST, two issues of JAINA Focus, inaugurated JAINA Patron Program that generated sufficient funds for JAINA'S basic operations. JAINA's next priority is to help every metropolitan area build their own temple. If they have a temple, help them to create Pathshala Program and if they have a temple and a Pathshala, encourage them to build housing for our senior citizens. Girish Shah of San Francisco announced that their temple building plans have won final approval from the city planners. This new temple will be on a 1.7-acre land and will serve 500 Jain families in the bay area. Bhumipujan will be on November 15. They have already raised $1.1 million and $600,000 in pledges. They hope to raise balance of $2 million needed to complete by sponsorship of deities. Everyone at the meeting cheered and wished them good luck. JAINA will certainly help to bring their dream to reality. Raju Shah, coordinator for YJA along with Gaurav Kapadia and Anish Sheth announced that 1998 YJA Convention will take place in Houston (see page 15 for more information). He pointed out a multimedia CD-ROM published by Harvard University on Pluralism that will be of interest to all Jains. He has offered to work on a book with JAINA to be published in American English for Jain households in North America as a primer on Jainism that will be distributed to all 8000 Jain families. Helping him in this effort will be Dr. Prem Gada of our Education Committee. Bachubhai Ajmera, newly appointed chairperson of World Community Services wants to create an escrow fund of $100,000 so when an emergency cry for help comes from any corner of the world, JAINA can readily respond. Ilaben Mehta who was appointed to the North American Family Assistance Program explained in the shortest speech of the day, mission of her committee- to help any Jain family in crisis situation. Nirmal Dosi of Scholar Visitation Committee estimated that Jain Scholars have delivered 68,000 lectures in North America. He would like to see combined celebration of Paryushan and Das Laxana for the entire Jain community. He presented offer from Dr. Kirti Shah and his brother Virendra Shah who perform various pujas, that they have offered to perform Jain weddings for any families. Any donations received by them will be contributed to JAINA General funds. Dr. Jagat Jain who will head Community Leadership Council, said he wishes to develop human resources for the future leadership of JAINA. Dr. Navin Mehta Honored Dr. Navin Mehta, a well-known philanthropist of New Jersey, was honored by former Prime Minister of India, I. K. Gujral, during his visit to New York City in September. Palkhiwala The next millennium begins with three very important events for Jains. In the year 2001, the first and foremost event for Jains will be 26th hundredth birth anniversary of Bhagavan Mahavir, who was born in the year 599 BC. Secondly, Shrimad Rajchandra, who expired in 1901, was the Guru of Mahatma Gandhi. He expired on the 16th of April, 1901, at the age of 33. We will be celebrating his 100th death anniversary. Thirdly, we will be celebrating the 100th death anniversary of Shri Virchand Raghavji Gandhi. He expired on the 7th of August, 1901. He attended the world parliament of religion in 1893 in Chicago. V.R. Gandhi was instrumental in introducing Jainism to the Western world more than a hundred years ago. JAINA fully intends to celebrate all these three events. The recipients are: Professor Sagarmal Jain of Benares; Bhagchandra Jain, Bhasker, of Nagpur; Pandit Dalsukhbhai Malvania of Ahmedabad; Professor Prem Suman Jain of Udaypur. The award was presented in recognition of their contributions in the field of study of Jainism, study of Prakrit, and for promotion of research in Jainism. The consists of a beautiful plaque, a shawl and a check for Rs. 21,000 to each recipient.

We reached Boston at 10pm and were mer by the welcoming party at the steps of the Jain Centre. After a short puja, we were assigned to private homes and experienced warm and friendly welcome from Boston Jains. Next morning, there was a busy pro- gram of puja, stavan singing from a talented New York group, speeches, exchange of Toronto, Ontario The Jains of Toronto celebrated the Paryushan Parva or 8 days atonement, fast- ing and seeking each other's forgiveness with last day of fasting on Saturday 6th of September. The Jain Centre was packed to capacity with over 600 people witnessing the celebration and formal honouring of 12 adults and youths who had fasted between 6 to 9 days. When young Sangeeta Mehta(24) and Akash Kothari (23) and Sunil Kothari (17) were asked how they managed to fast for 8 days, they replied the first day was tough but after that it was relatively easy. Bruce Costain who has earned a Ph.D. in Jain Studies from U of T said he has fasted for 8 days before and it was not difficult for him to do it again. On Sunday September 8th morning, all the 'Tapasvis' were again honored with variety of foods prepared by the families of Tapasvis and other Jain ladies. After thanksgiving prayers and blessings from visiting Samnijis or Jain nuns, the guests were entertained to a sumptuous breakfast. DADAWADI TIRTHYATRA or CHAITYA PARIPARTI. This is another post-Paryushan tradition revived in Toronto by a clutch of enthusiasts who have been working at it for last 11 or more years. This year's yatra was a five-tirth trip of 54 lively members of Toronto Jain Sangh who gathered in the early hours of Saturday, Oct.11 at the Jain Centre. The first puja and arti were performed and after a brief welcome and getting to know each other, the group proceeded to Buffalo, the second irth on the itinere. At the Buffalo Devalaya, we were warmly welcomed by the Buffalo Jain Sangh which included the past and present Presidents of JAINA. We all participated in the puja, arti, stavan singing and very sumptuous lunch. Our third destination was Boston Jain temple. The long bus ride gave an unique opportunity for people to show relaxed side In the afternoon, we proceeded to Al- bany, our fourth tirth. Our hosts showed tremendous gratitude for choosing their town as our tirth and spared no effort to make us welcome and comfortable. We were put up in a local motel for the night and next morning after breakfast, we headed for Syracuse, our fifth and final tirth. The eleven-family Jain Sangh of Syracuse may have been small in number but the welcome was elaborate and warm. A local commu- nity hall was set up for puja, singing and lunch. We had a special treat of singing new stavans written by two of the local Sangh members. We were thoroughly awed by their hospitality and it was time to say goodbye. Each of us were given a packed dinner and then we proceeded towards Toronto. This was a thoroughly enjoyable outing for all of us. Not only it represents revival of our old tradition, but it reinforces a feeling of community in thinly spread out fellow Jains in North America. The success story of 9th Biennial JAINA Convention in summer of 1997 reverber. ates not only in North America but also in India, Europe and Africa. The Convention Organizing Committee(COC) met in Toronto Jain Centre last month to study the accounts and to everyone's delight, the secretary of Finance confirmed that we had achieved a surplus of over $150,000. The COC congratulated themselves on achiev ing many 'firsts. This is the first JAINA Convention in last 18 years since JAINA's inception that will show surplus when the audited accounts are published. This is the first JAINA Convention where the COC has publicly agreed to share the surplus with JAINA to the tune of 25%. We hope that this will become a future trend and help JAINA towards a secure financial footing. This Convention has also instilled tremendous confidence and a sense of unity among Toronto Jain Sangh. Mr.Bakul Soneji from Irwine, California, an expert proponent of Maharshi Patanjali's Yog-Shastra, has found a willing audience among Jains who already follow many aspects of Yog in their daily life when they do Samayak, Dhyan, Asnas etc. The Yog presentations at Jain Centre are attended by mixed audiences of Jains and others. On November 9,1997, the Jain Society of Toronto organized Diwali Celebrations at Martingrove Collegiate and was attended by over 1000+ members and their guests. The program of entertainment organised by young Jains showed not only their professionalism but a beautiful demonstration of their talents in presenting short dramas, (eg. Gandhar Gautam's entreaties to Bhagwan Mahavir before achieving Keval Gnan), in garba and dances with colourful costumes and appropriate music, in singing stavans and songs accompanied by harmonium and tabla, again played by young Jains. People mingled before and after the dinner wishing everyone a happy new year. It was an enjoyable occasion. The Young Jains of Toronto have their own voice. The success of the 1997 JAINA Convention has inspired the Jain youths of Toronto to form Young Jains of Toronto(YJT), an organization to promote active participation of youths in the religious, social and cultural activities in Toronto. They are now planning a slate of Christmas programs which include a religious seminar with Dr.Bruce Costain (Balbhadraji). A special committee is struck to encourage all youths to attend Pathshala classes held at Jain Centre and in East Toronto. Midwest Manubhai Doshi, Regional Editor Chicago, Illinois Usual Activities. Snatra Puja and Digambar Puja are performed every Sunday. Sthanakwasi friends get together on the first Sunday of every month for chanting of Navkarmantra etc. Raj-Bhakti is performed on the third Sunday in Jnanamandir. Panchakalyanak and other pujas are performed sometimes. Arati and Mangal Dip are done every evening in the temple and Jnanamandir. Religious classes are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month from 11.00 A.M. to 12.00 noon. Paryushan and Das Laxana Parva. Paryushan Parva was celebrated from 30th August to 6th September. Kiranbhai Parekh gave discourses and Natwarbhai Soni recited devotional songs at Bhavana. Mahavir Janmavanchan was organized on 31 August when about 1500 people were present. Samvatsari Pratikraman was performed in English as well as Gujarati on 6th September. Samuh Parana, the collective termination, was organized on the 7th. The Parva witnessed the observance of austerities on a large scale. 41 persons inclusive of teenagers observed Atthai (Eight days' fast) and 3 persons observed longer fasts. 82 people West continued from page 11 on Wednesdays which were hosted at the homes of various members, and taught yoga, meditation and religious classes on Saturdays and Sundays. We celebrated Anant 8/JAIN DIGEST WINTER 1997 Jain Education Intemational Edmonton, Alberta The Alberta Jain Society together with the Alberta Gujarati Association celebrated Navratri and Diwali this fall. The Alberta Gujarati Association is hosting the 3rd Biennial Gujarati Folk Dance Festival of Western Canada/U.S.A. from August 1-3, 1998 in Edmonton, Alberta. The Nirvana Day was celebrated at the temple on Sunday, Nov.2nd, 1997 and the observed fasts ranging from three to seven days. All of them were honored by the Society for their performance. Das Laxana Parva was celebrated from 7th to 16th September in the presence of Dr. Ajitkumar Jain. Daily Puja and other religious rituals were observed during that period. The Samvatsari Pratikraman was performed on the last day. Prof. Joe Grabill of Illinois State University, normally visited the temple along with his students on September 23rd and the Theosophical Group of Wheaton visited on 6th October under the leadership of Joan McDougal. Those groups were guided by Manubhai Doshi who also gave necessary information about Jainism and its historical background. Discourses Etc. Discourses of Dhirajlal Pandit were held at the JainCenter from 8th to 14th October. The birthday of Laghurajswami was celebrated on October 26. Diwali Celebration. Diwali celebration was organized on November 2. The program started with the Puja which was followed by a discourse of Sudhaben Sheth. There was a Bhavana program of a musical Chaudharsh and the ghee boli for the sapnas, raised nearly $6,000.00 for the center. Diwali was celebrated on November 2 and the children presented several items on the topic of Lord Mahavir's Nirvana and his tapasaya main puja was attended by 150 people. On Dec 28, 1997, a mass puja will take place at the temple in Edmonton to celebrate the Parsvanath Jayanti. The Jain Society of Alberta has been invited to speak to their audience on Jainism by following organizations: Bahai Faith, Royal Alexandria Hospital and North American Interfaith Network. group after Sadharmivatsalya. A drive was conducted for collecting usable clothes for distribution to the needy people and 160 parcels were transported to Baltimore for shipment to India. The construction of the temple is almost complete and the installation ceremony has been tentatively planned during the independence week next year. St. Louis, Missouri Paryushan Parva was celebrated from August 30th to September 6th. Prof. Pratap Tolia was invited on that occasion to give discourses etc. Different Supans were earmarked for adults and youths and bids for them were invited ahead of the time of celebration. This helps in cutting down the time usually spent for Gheeboli. The Center is actively associated with the Hindu Temple project of St. Louis. in the forest. He also held several open which the Jain Youth Group and other children participated as usual. Through annual Ghee Boli during the ceremony approx. $16K was raised. Samvatsari Pratikraman were conducted in English as well (for the benefit of our youth) on August 17th. During Das Laxana there were pujas in the mornings and Swadhyay sessions in the evening. A special Das Laxana Puja was held on Monday, the Anant Chaturdasi day, in the morning. Swamivatsalya lunch was held on Sun- day, September 21, 1997. This year it was very special as about 70 members from Houston joined us as a part of their "Chaitya Paripati" visit to Dallas. We are actively trying to acquire land for future expansion of the Jain Center. Among the Tapasvis this year Damjibhai Shah did 9 Upvas. Others who did Atthai included Ashok Daftary, Gautam and Shweta Daftary, Kirit and Pramila Daftary (of Waco, Texas), Bina Shah, Ila N. Shah, Kalpana Shah, Nalini Shah, Sonali Shah, Usha Shah and Minita Vora. Usha Daftary did Gupvas. Many others did fewer Upvas and Ektanas/Aayambils, etc. Our congratulations to all the Tapasvis and Michchhami Dukkadam to all local members as well as Jain Digest readers throughout the world. Diwali meeting was held on November 2, 1997. Mahavir Jin Puja was followed by Jain songs from young children and a "Teerthankar Tour" - a slide presentation of various Tirth's in India, by the Jain Youth Group. Pradeep Shah, president of JSNT, presented details on possible land acquisition which was followed by Aarti and delicious lunch. Muni Rupchandji Maharaj visited during the September 28 weekend for five days and gave daily dis- courses. During his presence the Sangh had yearly Swamivatsalya. Used clothes drive was conducted by our youth group on October 17th. Shaman Shrut Pragnaji and Ashwini Pragnaji conducted Preksha Dhyan classes during October 14 through 28. Forty-five people attended the classes. On Mahavir Nirvan day (Oct. 30) we had Jaap. On the New Year day we had Panchkalyanak Puja. Members of Interfaith ministry visited our center on November 8th. Phoenix, Arizona This year the Phoenix Jain community celebrated the Paryushan Parva and Das Laxana Parva without any scholars or visitors from outside Phoenix area. We met everyday at Swadharmi Dr. Kiritbhai's place for Pratikraman and Swadhyay. The spirit of Tapasya as well as the religious activities was unusually high as many Mumukshus including young adults and children participated this year. Our annual Paryushan Mahavir Jayanti and the fund-raising pro- gram was successfully carried out by the young adults. They took keen interest in explaining the Trishaladevi's fourteen Swapnas. On Samvatsari day we had two Pratikramans, one for the adults and the other for young adults in English. Young adults performed their Pratikraman with - out any supervision or guidance from the adults this year. This was a great milestone for our Jain community. This Parva was concluded by a Swamivatsalya program honoring the Tapasvis. We were fortunate to have Pandit Shree Dhirajlal Mehta and Tulsa, Oklahoma "Michchhami Dukkadam and Happy New Year". This was one of the best Paryushan Parva we, Tulsa Jain community, had since we formed Sangh in 1990. Shamanji Shurt Pragnaji and Aswini Pragnaji blessed us with discourses, their knowledge, yoga and other activities. Our participation in all activities was excellent. Wecelebrated Mahavir Jayanti and Gheeboli for fourteen dreams of Mother Trishala. Families from Oklahoma City joined us and we raised a fair amount of money to build a new Derasar. It was followed by delicious Jain dinner. We had lots of Tapasya from 1 Upvas to 6 Upvas and eight days of Ektana. Some did it for the first time. Some children surprised us. Samvatsari Pratikraman was performed by Shamanji. We had 100% attendance and every body did with their heart. Shamanji stayed for 10 Houston, Texas Jain Society of Houston celebrated Paryushan and Das Laxana Parva with great devotion and Tapascharyas. Parekh, Regional Editor Los Angeles, California Paryushan and Daslakshana Mahaparva were celebrated from August 30 to September 15 under the guidance and direction of Shri Sunandaben Vohra and Shri Jagdishchandra Joshi respectively. The first day began with Kalpasutra vanchan fol- lowed by rangoli workshop by Reshma Shah, children's cultural program, general body meeting, Swami Vatsalya, and ended with a stavan program by Hansaben Nagda. Ev. eryday program included Kalpasutra vanchan in the morning, and Pratikraman and lecture by Sunandaben in the evening. Nearly 2,000 people attended the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti celebrations. Samuh samayak, samuh aarti, evening bhavna bhakti programs, chhatra installation, and others activities helped to raise great enthusiasm and religious fervor. The Tapasya achievements of a record number of tapasvis were recognized on the Parna day. The program began with a stavan pro- gram presented by Kalyanji Anandji, followed by Kshamapna Vanchan, tapasavi bahuman, and samuh parna, and concluded with a bhavna bhakti program by Pareshbhai. The tapasavis included Ashok Savla who observed Siddhi Tap, a total of 36 upvas in increments of 1 to 8, Virendra Shah and Shobhaben Shah who observed 16 upvas, Savitaben Shah who observed Varshi Tap and 40 adults and 5 youths who observed athai (8 upvas). In addition, tapasayas of nearly 34 children, ranging from Ekatana to 3 upvas, were also recognized. A community directory of the Jain Center of Southern California was published and distributed during the Paryushan parva. Pathshala classes began on September 28. With this year's record enrollment of over 230 children and a staff of 30 teachers and volunteers, the Jain Center has one of the largest pathshala programs in America. The participants also are able to attend language classes in Gujarati and Hindi. A new "Mummy and Me" class, offered for the first time, will provide 5 to 7 years' old children a head start in learning the glory of Jainism. A Jain Center Youth Council win- ter camp will be organized at Lake Arrow- head during the Christmas holidays. Ahimsa Day was celebrated on October 5. Mr. Alex Pacheco, President and Cofounder of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was the key speaker. Other programs included a compassionate fashion show, skits presented by children, display on animal experiments, distribution of literature and product samples, and information about other animal welfare groups. Diwali celebration on October 25 was coordinated by the Jain Senior Association and included rangoli competition, mehandi demonstration, fancy dress competition, and a party. A "108 Parshvanath Puja" event on October 26 provided an opportunity for 108 individuals and/or couples to do Abhishek. Vastu muhurat of the newly acquired Post Office Building took place on October 28. The acquisition of this building made it possible for us to vastly expand our Pathshala program. Gyan Pancham and Kartiki punam will be celebrated in November. A number of ongo- ing activities including Pathshala, Swadhayay, bhavna bhakti are organized on a regular basis. Devendrakirtiji informed us in the middle of September of his inability to come during the Paryushan Purve due to sudden change in his program. As in the previous years, our community observed high levels of tapascharya. Manhar Shah and Chanchalben Gogri observed Varsitap. Adult tapasvis include Saroj Dagli, Sandhya Jain, Navin Dedhia, Kirtida Bavishi, Himat Dagli, Shaila Shah, Dr. Megh Jain, Shakuntala Jain and Bhavna Shah. Young adult tapasvis include Heena Shah, Kalyani Bhayani, Mihir Shah, Neha Shah, Viral Parekh and Himanshu Shethi. The achievements of these tapasvis were recognized on September 20. The Jain Center of Northern California achieved another notable and joyous milestone when the City of Milpitas Planning Commission approved the plans for Jain Bhawan to be constructed at 774 South Main Street, Milpitas. A major joint celebration of Mahavir Nirvana Program and Bhumi Pujan is scheduled at the site on November 15(report on Page 6). The monthly bhavana is organized on the 2nd Friday of the month. Preksha Dhyan classes are offered at the Fremont Senior Citizen Hall during November and December. Pathshala for children is scheduled on 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month in both Fremont and San Jose. The objective of the celebration is to reemphasize the importance of nonviolence principle of Jainism to Jains and non-Jains. In many centres, this day is celebrated like Nirvana Day and Mahavir Jayanti Day. Jain Center of Cincinnati-Dayton invited the President of a local Vegetarian Society who spoke to our members on nonviolence and vegetarianism. About 100 persons attended the program on October 5, 1997. To promote nonviolence, the Center will be offering a one hour credit course for the second time on Nonviolence and Jainism at the University of Dayton in January 1998. We request the Regional Vice-Presidents to encourage local Jain Centres to plan this day next year. JAINA Charitable Trust Senior Citizens Services Committee JAINA will be involved in organizing activities and support services for Jain Seniors who have been living and working in the United States and Canada for the last two or three decades. Since their children are grown up and are away pursuing their own business and professional careers, this group is now entering into a new phase of their life. An empty nest syndrome may be setting in many cases, needing emotional support from religion and the community. To plan the religious and social activities and offer support services to Jain Seniors. JAINA has formed a committee that will address this emerging need in our community, Under the banner and umbrella of JAINA, we will encourage seniors to participate in religious activities specifically organized for them by the nearby Jain Centers as well as JAINA. This will include seminars and intellectual discussion sessions on Jainism, Pujas, trips to visit different Jain Centers, overseas pilgrimages, etc. The social activities will include community housing, presentations about maintaining good health seminars on financial and retirement planning, lectures on obtaining benefits such as social security and pensions, legal assistance on issues such as wills and immigration, travel in groups for sight-seeing, cruises, etc. We hope to create a directory of Jain professionals engaged in health and medicine, legal, finance, recreation and other fields who will be willing to help in providing voluntary consultation and other services to this group throughout North America. JAINA Charitable Trustees met at Siddhachalam on October 6, 1997. Dr. Mahendra Pandya chaired the meeting. The Trust approved $5000.00 grant in response to request from Tulsa Jain Sangh in order to start construction of their nonsectarian temple. Currently JAINA World Community Service is doing the social and humanitarian activities in the following areas: World Community Service 1. Sending used clothes to India. 2. Sending financial help when there is a natural disaster. 3. Sending used and new medical equipment to needy clinics in India. 4. Procuring and sending Soybeans as a high protein for some Specific charitable trust in India. 5. Create an escrow account for a reserve fund for use in disasters immediately and raise funds for disaster and replenish it from time to time. We are in a position to collect five to six 20 feet containers of used clothes to India. Our main problem is the cost of shipping them to India. Today we have met one target for 200 Patron Members. Now our other target is to raise a reserve fund of at least Registration No. A6013 $100,000 for World Community Service. We plan to raise this fund from all individuals who believe in this humanitarian work. I request you to contribute generously and help us to raise funds from your friends. A small amount from all the friends will be more than enough to meet this goal. We send help to India and any other part of the world where the help is needed, upon committee approval. Every year we plan to generate $100,000 to cover our cost. We plan to help and work with Virayatan in Bihar and Diwaliben Trust in Bombay and some other similar organizations which are doing humane and social work in most efficient way. Last year JAINA received a Certificate of Registration from the U.S. Agency for the International Development, USAID. We have to bestow special congratulations and thanks to Dr. Dhiraj H. In keeping with JAINA's vision of helping youth to learn Jainism and acknowledging youth effort, an essay competition leads to reading, research and practicing Jainism. YOUNG Minds YOUNG JAINS OF AMERICA YJA '98 Convention Site Selected The 1998 YJA Convention will be held at the beautiful Del Lago Resort and Conference Center. The largest lakeside feet of conveniently organized meeting space for YJA's exclusive use. The convention facility is a free-standing building just a 30 second walk from the Hotel Tower where the guests will sleep. The abundant space includes 25 meeting rooms and fits all needs such that no conference room will need to be altered (turned-over) once the convention begins. Besides having several auditorium size ballrooms, the resort has extensive audio/visual facilities with a 2500 sq. ft. amphitheatre as well as full CD-ROM, videoconferencing, and teleconferencing capabilites for hotel rooms and conference centers. Dining for the YJA Convention will be in Lago Vista, the larger of two restaurants in the Conference Center. The restaurant is elegantly furnished, seating 900 comfortably, and will be reserved for YJA guests only. Staff at Del Lago Resort and Conference Center are extremely accommodating and will not only accept recipes from us, but also lessons on how to prepare the food. Other eating establishments, such as pizza delivery services and the gift shop (which offers sodas, juices, and snacks) are available 24-hours a day within the hotel premises. Of course, room service will be available 24 hours a day and hospitality rooms in the first floor of the Hotel Tower will offer snacks throughout the convention. YOUNG MINDS (continued) Houston Convention Committee Begins Planning The Houston YJA Convention Committee (or HYJACC for short) has been busy with early preparations for next year's event. HYJACC consists of Houston Jain youth who will work throughout the upcoming year with YJA in organizing every aspect of the convention. The committee consists of a Chairperson, 9 committee chairs, and about 30 sub-committee members. Sure 40 people sounds like a lot, but every single one has either already began their jobs or have planned a full slate of responsibilities for the coming months. Following is a quick list of the major committees and each one's main tasks. The Activities committee is planning the detailed programming schedule of events for the 3 days of the convention, including the convention theme. They will coordinate the attendance of our distinguished guest speakers. The Registration committee is developing a registration form to be mailed out to all Jain household addresses on file with JAINA. They will receive completed forms and send out confirmation packets to all registrants. The Souvenir committee will publish a souvenir guide to be given to all participants. This will include a schedule for the convention, essays and notes covering the convention sessions and other related topics. The guide will contain ads and notices from supporting individuals and businesses. >The Fundraising committee is actively raising donations to help subsidize the cost of the convention. They are targeting Jain houselholds and 'Jaincompatible' corporate donors. The committee welcomes all donations from Jain families nationwide. Also, they welcome contacts from generous corporations that may wish to sponser this event. Please contact YJA or HYJACC if you would like to support this youth undertaking. "Whats new with the website?" is a typical question you might ask a board member. A lot of changes have been made but they won't be visible to the end user for some time. These changes differ from the way the web page started out. At first the website was handled entirely by one or two people. The first few webmasters took on this enormous task and created a solid foundation for future enhancements. Their early organization of information on the webpage was crucial to the future enhancements that are planned. Before the end of the school year YJA plans to obtain our own website without any space restriction. This will enable us to place more information about YJA, our local chapters and affiliates, and information about Jainism in this country. Last issue we mentioned some of these enhancements: chat rooms, newsgroups etc. Other planned improvements: placement of all Jain newsletters (i.e. newsletters from YJA, JAINA, and local centers), an online Jain dictionary (which will hopefully provide an easily accessible standard of translated Jain words into English), an online education center (hopefully providing a de facto standard for education). 16/JAIN DIGEST. WINTER 1997 The Finance committee will handle all money transactions, making sure we stay on budget. The Records committee will document the entire planning process and convention activities for recordkeeping. They have already archived the bidding process used by Houston to win the convention to help other cities plan future conventions. The Transportation committee will get all the youth from our airports to the convention site...free of charge. They are also working with major airlines to get a convention discount for participants. The Site committee has negotiated the rates with the hotel and conference center. They will make sure the site is ready and organized to facilitate our convention meeting needs. The Public Relations committee will help keep everyone up to date with planning updates and registration information by using national magazines, mailouts, and even a website. They will try to stir up news coverage of the actual convention in local and national media. FOR OUR HEALTH by Dr. Dilip Shah, Chicago, Illinois The annual 'head to toe' checkup has been relegated to the history books. In recent years, targeted 'periodic health examination' tailored to the individual's age, family history, and risk factors have become popular. Every physician has learned the value of detailed history-taking in disease prevention and diagnosis. Timely screening and counseling can prevent stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Why you need a physical examination Periodic checkups include: * Thorough history taking * Counseling for a low saturated fat diet, regular exercise, calcium supplements hormone supplements for women, and cessation of smoking, * Regular eye examinations and checkups for glaucoma. A review of all currently prescribed medications and a discussion of their interactions. Screening tests as outlined below. Screening Tests The various health groups such as the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force, American College of Physicians (ACP) and American Cancer Society make somewhat differing recommendations. The following tests, however, are considered appropriate for adults in good health. Blood Pressure (BP): BP should be checked during every visit to the doctor, or at least once a year. No definite statistics of its prevalence in Indians are available. Even mild elevation can lead to heart attacks, stroke and kidney disease. Nine out of ten cases have no known cause (idiopathic) for high blood pressure. Dietary salt restrictions, weight reductions, and moderate exercises, are the first steps before drug therapy is prescribed. Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Blood Sugar: This screening is advised after the age of 35 for men and 45 for women. With a strong family history of premature heart disease, this screening should be done earlier. Cholesterol breakdown test (LIPID Profile) for good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol is necessary before dietary or drug therapy is prescribed. Colon and Rectal Cancer: A panel appointed by an agency for health care policy concluded that deaths from bowel cancer can be reduced by one-third by a screening test. Men and women of 50 and older can choose among various tests: an annual stool test for occult blood, sigmoidoscopy every five years, barium enema every five to ten years, or colonoscopy every ten years. Those with previous colon polyps or cancer in the family should have this test more frequently. Clinical Breast Examination: An annual breast examination by a physician for women over 50. Mammography: Major medical groups agree that over the age of 50, women should have a mammogram every one to two years to detect breast cancer. Prostrate Cancer: An annual digital rectal examination for all men over the age of 40 and a blood PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) screening test after the age of 50. The good news is that more than 65% of men with high PSA levels do not have prostate cancer. The occurrence of this type of cancer within a father or brother is a reason for an early screening test. Pap Smear (PAP) for Cervical Cancer: Women should consider this simple test every one to three years after the age of 18 until the age of 65. Immunizations: People 65 years or older should have a pneumonia vaccine (usually given once) and an annual influenza vaccine every fall. In summary, this is a guideline for the group in general. However, individual needs and frequency of testing can be different due to personal and family history and the physician's practice pattern. Why Go to Temple? (Based upon Teddy Roosevelt's reasons for going to church in Ladies' Home Journal in 1917) 1. In this actual world a templeless community, a community where men women have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid downgrade. It is perfectly true that occasional individuals or families may have nothing to do with temple or with religious practices and observances and yet maintain the highest standard of spirituality and of ethical obligation. But this does not affect the case in the world as it now is, any more than that exceptional men and women under exceptional conditions have disregarded the marriage tie without moral harm to themselves, interferes with the larger fact that such disregard, if at all common, means the complete moral disintegration of the body politic. 2. Temple work and temple attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others and the sense of braced moral strength which prevents a relaxation of one's own moral fiber. 3. There are enough holidays for most of us that can quite properly be devoted to pure holidays. 4. Making Sundays differ from other holidays-among other ways-in fact that there are fifty-two of them every year. At least on Sunday, go to the temple. 5. Yes, I know all the excuses. I know that one can worship the God/Creator and dedicate oneself to good living in a grove of trees, or by a running brook, or in one's own house, just as well as in a temple. But I also know as a matter of cold fact the average person does not thus worship or thus dedicate himself. If he/she stays away from the temple, he/she does not spend his/her time in good works or in lofty mediation. He/she looks over the colored supplement of the newspaper, watch sports on TV or goof around. 6. He/she is very fortunate that he/she will hear a "vyakhyan/parvachan" by a good man who is engaged all the week long in a series of wearing and humdrum and important tasks for making hard lives a little easier, a little happier, a little uplifting. 7. He/she will listen to and take part in reading some beautiful passages from the "Agamas/Gita". And if he/she is not familiar with the "Agamas/Gita", he/she has suffered a loss. by Ramesh Shah, Cleveland, Ohio 8. He/she will probably take part in singing some good "stavans/prayers/bhajans". 9. He/she will meet and nod to, or speak to, good, quiet neighbors. He/she will come away feeling a little more charitable towards the entire world, even toward those excessively foolish young men/women who regard temple going as rather a soft performance. 10. I advocate a man's joining in temple works for the sake of showing his/her faith by his/her works. 11. The person who does not in some way, active or now, connect himself/herself with some active, working temple, misses many opportunities for helping his/her neighbor and therefore, incidentally for helping himself/herself. Shri V. R. Gandhi Scholarship Fund Established The Late Shri Virchand Raghavaji Gandhi, the renowned Barrister-at-Law, a great exponent of Indian culture, a humanitarian, a patriot, and a Jain scholar represented Jainsim in the Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. He spread Lord Mahavir's message of non-violence and universal love across the world vigorously. He would have accomplished much more but for his untimely demise at an early age of 37. In order to commemorate this historical event and to honor this great Jain leader and philosopher, JAINA, through the efforts of Shri Pravin C. Shah of New York, has agreed to institute a scholarship fund entitled Shri Virchand Raghavji Gandhi Scholarship Fund. 24th Medical Camp at Bidada (Kutch) January 6 to 19, 1998 Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust has organized charitable medical camps for the past 23 years. It started with eye and dental camps in 1975 and later cardiac and E.N.T. were added. The hospital was established in 1985 and then other surgical specialties: Orthopedics, Urology, Gynecology all were added. In 23 years the Trust has treated more than one million people and operated on 30,000 patients. JAINA participated in this humanitarian work in 1992, and collected donations from N. America. Since then Jain Center of S. California is carrying on this humanitarian work, collecting funds and medical equipment and sends it over to the Trust. Mr. Vijay Chedda, Navin Gangar and Dr. Manibhai Mehta of J. Center of S. California Co-ordinate presently for this project. Dr. Manibhai Mehta, Jaina's Past President, Dr.Dhiraj Shah, President, Dr. Pravin Mehta, Dr. Shanti Kenia, Dr. C. TULSA JAIN SANGH: Non-Sectarian Jain Center The Jain community in Tulsa has a vision to give our children an opportunity to learn about culture, traditions, religion and many other valuable things. This vision could be realized better if we have our own temple and a center where all of us can get together on regular basis. Also, Indian Community in Tulsa is in need of a community center. We have an opportunity to combine a religious place with a community center. Tulsa Jain Sangh has purchased a land, over an acre, near 71" Street and Utica Avenue in south Tulsa. The cost of the land was $44,000.00 and paid from the existing funds. Our plan is to build a Jain Temple (Derasar) with a community center. Currently, the architect is working on drawings and zoning approval. We expect work to start in early spring of 1998 and complete the construction by the end of next year.
