I was dreaming for several years before coming to U.S. in 1972, to have a temple and to serve Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. Every night I was thinking about different Gods and a temple Somehow Lord sent me to Raleigh, where there is no temple. The Hindus of this area were not even thinking of a temple. As a son of a Hindu Priest with religious background I started Satyanarayan pooja at my house and observed Lord Krishna's birthday at N.C. State's student center on Janmasthmi celebration. My father was a priest in India at Radha Krishna temple, so I have a special place in my heart for Lord Krishna. Gradually my Indian friends started to attend my religious functions. At the end of two years I formed a Geeta group. In this group we were discussing different interpretations of Geeta slokas. The friends who took part in the discussion were Dr. M. M Sawhney, Dr.B.S. Gupta, Dr.Arvind Shah and several others. After a while other friends also showing interest in Satyanarayan katha, Shiva ratri & Basant Panchami ect. So we started observing these festivals at different places as Community halls of Apartment complexes and also other buildings of N.C. State University, By 1976 Indian community grew up and some prominent members met in the basement of my house to formalize the group. They gave a new name The Hindu Society of North Carolina. Later on they also made a constitution of the Society. At that time the Board of Directors were coming from different parts of the State as Greensboro, Lumberton, Durham etc. The membership dues were $2.00 per family per year..Due to the influx of Indian people we thought to buy our own building. So in 1980 we bought a place to house this Society at Ashe Avenue Raleigh We did not have any funds to buy this place so Board of Directors have to give guarantee to pay the mortgage. The names of these Directors will remain in the history of the Society. There were about 150 families enrolled as members. Every year more Indians were pouring in ,so we thought to have a bigger hall.Somehow Dr. Arvind Shah found six acres of land in the heart of Triangle area at a reasonable price, so we grabbed it. After two years when its mortgage was paid, .. The construction of this temple began. It opened on 20th Dec. 1986. We have to find guarantors. Most of the Board of Directors agreed still bank wanted one more. By Lord's Blessings one member outside of the Board came forward. It was a very happy occasion' The design and layout of this temple was done by Dr. Devendra Sharma, a Physician at Smithfield, N.C. He spent lots of time to make it happen. The membership dues were only $30 dollars per family per year and number of members was about 400.I was only priest in the temple for so many years my wife Saroj Sharma helped me a lot. She spent most of the morning in the temple. Without her help I could not do this work Then she also became President of the Society several times. About this time Indian family started pouring in the Triangle area. Most of the 50% people of community were keeping their traditions and religious
Sanskars. Before constructing the new house they were doing Bhooming pooja later on house entering pooja. It looks that Hindu religion has taken roots in this area. What I was thinking 20 or 25 years ago has changed. Many new face we seen in the temple. This forced us to hire a priest. I was working as a volunteer priest and still continuing. Right now the membership of the society is about 900,and dues are $60 per family per year. The life membership is 500dollars. This increase in numbers of people led us to think to have another hall for community needs so in 2002 we got this new hall It remains busy most of the time performing weddings, birthday parties, thread ceremony ect. This hall can accommodate about 1400 people. The special feature of this hall is that it holds Gurkulul classes, Slokas class's language and dance classes for about 250 students every Sunday morning. I have my blessings with the Society.. This Society is a living entity because it is growing. It started without any land, first it got one and half acres, then six acres and now it has 14 acres and three temporary homes.. I wish that it should keep on growing.

________________
I was born in the city of Kanpur UP in 1932. My father's name was Pundit Vaikunth Nath Sastri and mothers name was Srimati Sastri. Both of my parents were very religious. Since I was five year old, I had a dream of building a Mandir. Whenever we used to visit any small Mandir, I used to think about it. Time passed, I finished my education and got married to Dr. G.D. Sharma. We both got settled at Lucknow. We both stayed there before my Husband went to Canada in 1960 for his Doctorate. While he was doing his studies, I got involved in many social activities in Lucknow and with the help of our nab ours, we formed a 'Mahilla Mandal', which still exists. I always keep trying to look for various opportunities to help others. In 1962 Indo-China war, Nehruji requested contribution from every citizen. I managed to collect 25 tolla sona and gave that to him to help our army. In 1962 December, I joined my husband in Canada. There we stayed in one of our friends' house for six months. My Friend recently had her third baby and she was in the hospital. While she was away, I took care of her kids. I always kept god's picture with me. One day when I was praying, one of my friends kid came in the room and asked me, why I am worshiping a monkey (for Hanumanji). I was very hurt with his comments and promised myself that if we will stay outside India, then I will teach Hindu culture not only to our kids, but to everyone else kids too. Today I have 5 kids and 10 grand kids. I feel very proud to say, that all of them have very good knowledge about our culture and rituals. Once my husband completed his Ph. D. in 1964, we went back to India, where Alok was born. After his birth, we moved to Nigeria and later to Sudan on a U.N. mission. We stayed in Sudan for more than 5 years. I and my husband kept helping Indian communities in Nigeria and Sudan. Finally in 1972 we moved to Raleigh USA. When we came to Raleigh, we started doing Ramayan and Satyanarayan Puja on every Hindu occasion. Many people told us, why we do all these and not enjoy the life as everyone else does. But it was written in our destiny to spread Hindu religious & culture everywhere. So we keep doing, what we were doing. slowly-slowly community started getting use to it and they started adopting us and enjoying doing the prayers. Mr. Mathur's and P. Chand's family started joining us on daily basis. Once few dozen families started gathering, we started the Hindu Society of North Carolina in the year 1972 in our basement with two dollar membership. In December 1980 we purchased a church where we started doing prayers every, 'Purnima' and also started doing Diwali and Holi gathering. In 1984 one day during Diwali festivities, I saw Goddess Durga, who was asking me to build a Mandir. I woke up and discussed it with my husband. We were not sure, how to get that much of money. Since

HSNC had only $5000 funds with it. In 1985 I requested Mr. H. Pandiya to become HSNC president and start looking for a site. Finally, with god grace Arvindji found a six acreage site in Morrisville. It was for $70,000. We all started raising the money. We sold the old property in $8,000 and took the loan for the new Mandir. With god grace, our dream became the reality in 1986, we now had our own Mandir. It is my believe that who so ever visit this place with good hart and pray to the God. He/She will surely be granted his wishes by the great lord. It is very resent when we also got two more pundits at our Temple and finally we also have our own cultural Hall. HSNC and Hindu community now has more than 14 acreage of land at this site. I still have a dream to include one children park, 'Gumbad' for mandir, one picnic shelter for the community, one water fountain and housing for the senior citizens at this site. With god grace we will do this together in our near future. Now our Indian community is pretty big in the Triangle. If we want, we can surly build anything.. I was the president of HSNC for 10 times and still feel very energetic to serve the community for a very long time. Thanks to all the HSNC members and Indian community at large for keeping yourself and your kids aware with the Hindu culture and the ritual. God bless you all.

FIVE TIPS TO MAKE ONE A BETTER PERSON...
Ego is responsible for many problems in our society. Bow your head to the Gods every day. This helps in reducing the egoistic attitude. Help others as much as you can. The blessings of the person helped make the path to success less thorny. Charity to the needy and to religious organizations goes a long way in making life better for all. Be honest and speak the truth. Analyze your actions at the end of a day. Did you hurt anyone? Don't do that again.

Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma
Mrs. Saroj Sharma
As an old saying goes, "Behind every successful man is a woman," but Mrs. Saroj Sharma walks beside her husband, Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma, and legitimately shares with him the credit for establishing the Hindu Society. As a founding member of the Society she has worked with him and other members to make it a voice of the Hindu Community in this area. She has spent countless hours mobilizing community support for several projects, most importantly, fund-raising for the Hindu Bhavan.
Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma, our current HSNC president, popularly called "Sharmaji," is a pioneer of religious revival among the Hindus of the Triangle area and a source of inspiration to the Hindu community in North Carolina in general. For several years Dr. Sharma's house was synonymous with the Hindu Society. Indeed he acted as de facto priest of the Hindu community. He is on call almost seven days a week to perform ritualistic ceremonies in the Hindu homes. Dr. Sharma is the founding President of the Hindu Society. He was the conveyor of the first organizational meeting of the Society in the fall of 1976. Prior to the purchase of the first Hindu Bhavan, his house was the administrative base of the Society. Dr. Sharma was born in Shikohabad (Uttar Pradesh), India. He earned his M.S. in Zoology from the Agra University in 1950. He went to Canada in 1959 and studied at McGill University, graduating with a Master's degree in Entomology in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in 1964 from McGill. In 1995 he left India for a teaching assignment at the University of Ife IN Ibadan, Nigeria and stayed there for two years. From 1967 to 1972 he worked in Khartoum as an UNESCO advisor to the Government of Sudan. Since moving to Raleigh in 1972 Dr. Sharma has taught as a science teacher in various schools in North Carolina. He has authored more than few dozen articles and three high school textbooks in areas of zoology and botany.
While abroad with her husband, Mrs. Sharma founded the India Association at McGill University (1963); The India Association in Ibadan, Nigeria (1965); and the India Association and religious group in Khartoum, Sudan (1967). In Khartoum she also served as secretary and later as vice-president of the International Women's Club for four years. Mrs. Sharma was born in Kanpur, India, and received her Master's degree in Hindi language and literature from Allahabad University in 1957.
He has been a member of the Lions Club of Raleigh since 1978. Dr. Sharma and his wife, Saroj Sharma, the current president of Hindi Vikas Mandal live in Raleigh. They have five children.

A Dream Becomes Reality.
Formation of HSNC - September 16th 1976.
The Hindu Society of North Carolina is the culmination of the efforts of a small group of Indians which congregated at the house of Dr. and Mrs. Ganga Dhar Sharma in Raleigh prior to the incorporation of the Society.
This Group consisted of about a dozen people who met informally, once or twice a month, for Gita path (study and recitation of Gita), Satyanarayan Katha (telling of didactic tales from Hindu mythology relating to Bhagavan Satyanarayan and other gods) and Kirtan (group singing of hymns). Members of the group then began to meet more frequently at each others' houses. As the number increased, they decided to form a society with the object of providing a forum for the Hindu community in the Triangle and in neighboring towns, for religious and cultural enhancement
On September 8, 1976, at the initiative of Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma, and about twenty people gathered at his house and enthusiastically endorsed the idea of forming a society. At this meeting they also elected a working board of directors consisting of the following Dr. R.K. De, Mr. Mool Raj Mathur (Vice President), Dr. Naren Tambe, Dr. Man Mohan Sawhney, Dr. Arvind Shah, Dr Ganga Dhar Sharma (President), and Dr. Mansukh C. Wani.
Upon a petition signed jointly by Dr. Sharma and Mr. Mathur, the Hindu Society was incorporated in the State of North Carolina, on September 16, 1976 as a non-profit organization. The location of the Society during the four years between 1976 till 1980 was transitory; meetings were hosted at a variety of places. Finally, in December 1980, the Society bought its own home-Hindu Bhavan-on Ashe Avenue in Raleigh.

New Temple at Morrisville - December 20th 1986.
On Saturday December 20, 1986, a dream becomes reality. Twenty years back Hindu Bhavan at Morrisville was inaugurated on this day.
Hindu Bhavan is a dream that took root more than thirty years back, when a group of Indians in the Research Triangle area seeking to strengthen their ties to one another, to their religion, and to their cultural heritage, formed the Hindu Society of North Carolina. In the early years the members of the Society met in the basements of private houses, or in rented halls, for religious festivals or group prayers (satsanga, kirtan, katha-vachan, etc.) Their number was under one hundred and the prayer sessions never attracted more than a few dozen people at one time (197680). Although these temporary quarters served their purpose well, the lack of a permanent and more spacious home (Bhavan soon became a serious impediment to the growth of the Society. In fact, the number of members declined gradually from 99 in 1977 to 85 in 1980.
With prayerful determination, the search for a "home" was begun and finally led to an old building on 214 Ashe Avenue in Raleigh. Although in a rather dilapidated condition, the price tag of $40,000 was high for the meager resources of the Society. However, there was no turning back; with generous donations from the members and personal guarantees by some members of the Board of Directors, the building was purchased in December 1980, opening its doors to the community in January 1981. Thus the first Hindu Bhavan in Research Triangle was born - the cherished dream became a reality.
That historic event proved a turning point in the history of the Society. Thereafter the membership rose dramatically from 101 in 1981 to above 400 in 1985 and currently standing at more than thousand. The Ashe Avenue Bhavan, bought with so much enthusiasm and faith, had room only for about 200 people and could not accommodate ensuing unprecedented growth in membership. But dreams begot dreams: a new aspiration was born - for a bigger and better facility.
The next stip was to undertake a drive to raise funds for a new building. In addition to making personal monetary donations, members now contributed time and talents by arranging fundraising events such as dances, concerts, bazaars and festivals. In September 1984 the perseverance and foresight of the working body of the Society and its members resulted in the ultimate purchase of a six-acre plot in Morrisville, at the cost of $70,000. The dream was now in the hands of the dreamers; they were ready to shape its reality.
The Bhavan's transfer from Ashe Avenue to Morrisville was not an easy one. Design of the building was not just a matter of space accommodation. The blueprint of the building would have to be flexible enough to satisfy every shade of opinion among the members, who sought to bring the rich diversity of its Indian heritage to the new home. Arriving at consensus on almost every issue, from the specific floor plans to selection of the murties (idols) of chosen gods and their sizes, to the choice of building materials, took the form of endless debate. However, the final decisions were always reached in a spirit of harmony.

The Bhavan is much more than the simple structure it appears. It is a reminder of a precious heritage, a symbol evoking the Hindu spirit. The temple is a "living thread", it was noted by one- a "thread leading back to India." And it is a thread which may be perceived and followed by our children. Today we witness the fruition of the dream that the Hindu community in this area nourished and empowered ten years ago.

You're Opinion, suggestion and comments.
Suman and T. Nath Batra - We consider it to be an hour in providing the following factual information regarding the Hindu Temple in Raleigh, North Carolina. We emigrated from Canada in Dec. 1978 to settle in Raleigh, NC. The population of immigrants of the Indian origin amounted to 150 families in the three (3) adjacent cities - Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham, known as the "Research Triangle Area". When we inquired about the Hindu Temple in Raleigh, we were directed to 5400 Kaplan Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606, the house owned by Dr. G. D. Sharma and Mrs. Saroj Sharma.
The above Temple served as an excellent place for holding various social functions, and religious services commonly observed by the people of the Indian Origin. The Temple never limited itself to observing religious services based on the provincial divisions and sub-divisions (such as Punjab, Gujrat, Maharashtra, Bengal, Medras, ... etc.). It always provided a "Cosmopolitan (non-provincial)" attitude. It is for this non -provincial attitude that we ascertain, the Temple at 5400 Kaplan Drive to be the first Hindu Temple in Raleigh. The cosmopolitan attitude which was adopted at Kaplan Drive prevailed when the Temple was moved to its interim location at Boylan Street, Raleigh. The same cosmopolitan attitude (evident by the variety in the Deities honored and worshiped) is reflected in the Temple's permanent location (Aviation P kwy. Morrisville) to the present day. Should you have any question, or the authenticity of the above testimony, please call us at (919)-782-4450. Evening hours are preferred. Sincerely,
Jagdish Bhandari - It has been a privilege to be associated with the Society as a Life member as well as in the management and growth of the Society for the last 21 years. In 1985, when our family (my wife Prabha and three children Ricky, Rachana and Anjana moved to the Triangle area and visited the HSNC old site on Ash Ave., near N.C. State University, the Society was very small with a small place of assembly and worship. However, the leadership, untiring dedication, and warm welcome offered by Dr. Gangadhar and Mrs. Saroj Sharma to one and all and any new comer, has been a key factor in the growth of the Society. The grass root approach, openness and the broad based accommodative nature of the Society's founding fathers has benefited not only the Hindu residents in the Triangle area but also the all other interested ind ividuals of other faiths that support the basic values of Hindu religion. The Society has helped and benefited all its members in instilling the values and rich heritage of our culture and religion in our children and the next generations to come, particularly born in this country. As a parent Society, HSNC has provided opportunity to many other large and small community organizations in the RTP area. In spite of the exponential growth of the Indian community in the Triangle area, HSNC is still respected an d serves as an umbrella organization. I would hope that the future years for the Society would be equally good or better with improved resources and membership to carry out its mission. With Best Complements,
Harish Rangwani- I am delighted to know that Hindu Society of North Carolina is celebrating its 30th Anniversary and 20h Anniversary of the Temple. It is a privilege to be part of such organization that maintains the traditions and richness of our cultural and religious heritage. The credit of succes sful completion of such long span of time of the Society goes to our Members and dedicated volunteers, especially Sharma Aunty and Uncle. I wish and pray for the Society and its Members for many such celebrations in future.
Surendra Paul and Usha Singla - We feel blessed to have Mrs and Dr G D Sharma, along with other leaders and volunteers, start this society and bring it to this higher level. Congratulations to everybody on its 30 anniversary. Following are some items for which, we feel, the society s hould continue to take leadership role in providing to the community: a) Get younger generation involved in running the society and policy making. B)Emphasis on teachings of Gita & explanation of Hindu Philosophy in scientific way.
Dhruva Kumar - Since coming to the board in January 2006, I have realized with respect, the immense task accomplished by the founders and the subsequent office bearers of this society. Although much has been achieved, much more needs to be done to accommodate the changing need s of the Hindu community in America. We need to adjust to our changing demographics, which has more seniors and fresh immigrants. At the same time we must make a push to give Hindu religion its deserved national stature. With God's blessing and your help. I plan to make my small contribution towards achieving these goals.

Suvas Shah - I, Suvas Shah was in the Hindu Society board for six years from 1997 -2000 and again in 2003-2004. As chairperson of Construction and Planning Committee, I was actively involved in construction of the Cultural Hall in 1998 - 2000 and also negotiated in behalf of the society for purchase of four adjoining properties which added 5.25 acres of land for parking lot extension and the two priest quarters.
Madhusudan L Surti - It makes me proud to witness the growth of the HSNC society since its existence. I still have a memory of the opening ceremony of the small temple in a house near NC State University. It was an honor to serve as president of the HSNC during the 2004 year. I tha nk all the members for your support during my presidency (2004) of the HSNC. Your strong interest and participation helped us achieve significant milestones as listed below:
-Handicap ramps per members requests -Redesign flooring with carpets and tiles -Purchased additional 2 acres land adjacent to our current property -Initiated efforts to combine two HSNC properties under one plan -Open communications and information sharing with HSNC members at large. Thanks for providing me an opportunity to serve our Hindu Society.
Madhu Dev - It was a pleasure to serve on the Hindu Society Board as a board of director for four years. During my tenure, the board and the community planned and completed the construction of the cultural hall. It required a lot of hard work however, it was a very satisfying accomplishment for me and everybody involved. With the help of our community, we were also able to organize many successful fund raising programs for the Hindu Society. More importantly, during this period our children Monica and Niraj also got involved in organizing and helping with the summer camps and other activities for the young children. The future of HSNC lies in the hands of younger generation, so we need to encourage youngsters to be fully involve d in the activities of HSNC. May God bless HSNC and our community. Thanks.
Benu and Sanjoy Chatterjee - We have been involved with the Hindu Society for over 25 years as life members. We have sponsored programs, donated time and money (including autom ated bank withdrawal for template maintenance), and supported cultural initiatives from Bengali classes to functions. Our children have raised over $3500 for the construction of the new hall besides helping with several fundraising programs through their cultural participation.
As we move into the future, our vision for the temple is an organization where our children can keep our heritage and blend it with their times and culture so that it becomes their own. It should be an organization that is inclusive, comforting and a place we can all call our own. Thank you.
Mrs. Ratnaveni Murty and Prof. Linga Murty - We are so very happy to express our pleasure and to bid hearty congratulations on the 30th anniversary of our Hindu Society. I had the privilege and honor to have served on the board during early and mid-80s when the current temple was being built. We still recall the good old days during which time we all actively participated in the varied activities of the society. With the cultural center extension the temple has become the central place for all Indians to get together and celebrate different functions. We wish that the community including the youth will utilize the society in enhancing their social and religious lives. We wish the best for the future growth of our society.
Dharma P. Agrawal - I was the first president after the current building of Hindu Bhavan was opened in December 1986 and I faced tremendous pressure in establishing guidelines for future operations of this cultural and religious society. My wife Purnima and both children Sonali and Braj devoted a great deal of time and efforts in a very tight financial situation and we economized as much as we could while maintaining the sanity of the environment. A community-wide appreciation reflected our dedication and commitments and we are really proud that we were able to set a unique example for this novel cause. Even though we have moved away from the Research Triangle area, our heart is still there. We wish all the success to the soci ety and hope the membership will continue to have well-balanced and diversified activities.
December 20
V.J. Balachandran - I was involved with HSNC from 1984 and had served the society in various capacities. I was President of the society during 1997-1999. During my term I was successful in implementing the new Hall project and also getting the Board's approval to appoint Priests for the Temple. I had the privilege of working with diverse groups and had

the full support of the board and members during my tenure. i wis h the society all the best during its anniversary celebration.
DICKY S. WALIA - have had the distinct honor and privilege of being the legal advisor to the HSNC since 1994. I have witnessed the Society membership swell to 1000+ families in this short peri od. The HSNC continues to positively impact the religious, moral and cultural lives of Indian Americans living in North Carolina. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on this momentous occasion
Hemant Majmudar, BOD - 1994 to 1997. Congratulations to the Hindu Society of NC! For the past 20+ years, I have been one of the privileged few to witness the society's amazing progress. I am honored to have been able to offer my services on many committees and eventually as a member of the Board of Directors. Along with many others, understood the need for our own community center and we planted the seeds for it long back, which has become a reality for all of us to enjoy today. We all are truly blessed to have selfless and dedicated volunteers like the respected Mr. Sharmaji and Mrs. Saroj Sharma, along with countless others. I believe along with the growth comes the responsibility and we must create an atmosphere at the society for our well-educated, smart, and talented younger generation to get involved and eventually accept the batons from us to run our beloved society and its multi-million dollar asset. Once again congratulations to all of us!
Patti Tyma's write-up on Mr. Sanjay Mundra - Sanjay Mundra is a Founder and Principal of the Soleil Gro up, Inc. With an extensive background in hospitality and real estate underwriting and executive management, Mr. Mundra's expertise is in identifying and capitalizing on real estate investments. His leadership has contributed significantly to the current $200 million value of the Soleil Group, a fully integrated real estate company offering full -service hotels, luxury condominiums and Class A offices across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Mr. Mundra is behind the vision for Soleil Center, a high-rise mixed-use project at Crabtree Valley. This structure will be the tallest building in Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Mundra is also a founding member of the TrustAtlantic Bank. TrustAtlantic Bank is a $90 million privately held bank. Mr. Mundra lives in Raleigh with his wife Pam and three sons, Avi age 12, Ashwin age 6, and Aaron age 3. Our best wishes to the HSNC.
Bhupender S. Gupta - I congratulate the Hindu Society of North Carolina on reaching the 30-year landmark of growth and service to the membership. The Society provides much needed religious, cultural and social programs and opportunities to the members. These services help the members keep abreast of their Hindu beliefs and values and help their children learn the practices of their elde rs and maintain those while growing in the Western environment. With the help of my wife and many members of the Triangle Park community, I have had the good fortune of organizing a Vedic Havan Group that has met regularly once a month (3 " Sunday) since 1980 to conduct Vedic yagya and discuss Vedic teachings. We have seen the size of the group grow extensively and it is gratifying to see how enthusiastically our youths continue to appreciate the teachings and participate in the performance of the yagya. The Society has made great strides since its inception, in terms both of an increase in membership and the construction of the facilities. Swami Shivanand Bhat and Pandit Dwarkanath Trivedi are long sought for and welcome additions to the Society. The presence of these learned individuals have expanded the services to the community.
Realizing that we are a Society largely made of volunteers, who are busy in keeping up with their own professions in this fast paced world, we should take pride in the progress we have made and the programs we have regularly offered!
Dr. Man Mohan Sawhney - My wife, Sharda , and I have lived in Raleigh since 1963. With God's blessings, we have had a wonderful life which has been full of joyful events. Among the most joyful events was our meeting Mr. Ganga and Mrs. Saroj Sharma more than thirty year ago. They soon inspired us to join them and a few more families in the founding of the Hindu Society of North Carolina, and in the acquisition of a Church building that would become the first Hindu temple in the Raleigh area. We were given the opportunity to be one of the seven families to guarantee the mortgage on the property. I was also very happy to draft the first constitution for the newly founded Society. I would later serve in many capacities including administrative advisor to the President and the Society. I am confident that the Temple and the Society would remain a great community asset for many generations to come. My hope and dream for the future is that someday the Society would operate a great High School that would emphasize academic excellence, provide exposure to the Vedic traditions, and be open to young people of all religious and ethnic backgrounds.

of the Hindu Temple in Morrisville. Right from its very inception, our Society has con sistently promoted a variety of religious, intellectual, cultural, social, and charitable activities and programs. In my capacity as a former President, former Member of the Board of Directors, and a former Administrative Advisor, I have indeed been fortunate and blessed to have been able to contribute to such activities. Since the establishment of the Hindu Society, we have witnessed an enhanced spirit of worship, dedication, and devotion amongst our community members and in their efforts towards betterm ent of the humanity. We pray that the Almighty continues to provide inspiration to all of us to be respectful to all religions, and that we may contribute to the peace, joy, and harmony all over the world. I and my wife Shanthi with our children Ravi and Jayanth used to live in Raleigh/Cary from 1975 and 1991. We have been actively participated in the society activities during this period. The society grew and served the community very well under the leadership of Dr. and Mrs. Sharma (two pillars of the community). We were quite happy to be a part of the growth of the community and the Hindu Society during our stay in Raleigh/Cary. Our contribution is very negligible and we owe a lot to our friends in the Triangle for their help and support. We love the Triangle community and we have decided to come back and start our retirement life in Raleigh/Cary. This will likely happen within the next several years. We look forward to come and do our share of service to this great diversified and unified community. Let us pray the Lord to provide His Grace to all of us and help us to lead a life of sacrifice and service with peace and happiness. We want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Board members and all the behind the scene heroes like you for the success of HSNC. With love and our best regards,

N.R. Parikh - In August of 1985, Anjana, Vedangee, Anand and I settled into the Southern Part of Heaven' after many cold years in southern Ontario. Very soon thereafter, we attended the grand opening of the Hindu Bhavan. The Hindu Society and the Bhavan quickly became an intrinsic part of this culture we were now a part of. My appreciation for the Bhavan and its supporting community continued to grow since those early days. The Society taught me the bases of Hindu doctrine and tradition, developed an environment for me to rediscover my heritage and culture, and helped me instill the foundations of these in my children. Remarkably, because the Society and Bhavan has had this tremendous role in my life, when I go to other temples (even in India) and close my eyes to pray, I envision the deities at the Morrisville Hindu Bhavan. Amazing. The simple, elegant design of the temple itself and the diversity of deities developed and reflected an incredibly diverse community unified by spirituality, culture, and care of members for one another. The friends I have made through the Society have enriched my views, helped Anju and I raise our children, challenged my intellect, guided me in times of trouble, helped me grow as a person, and celebrated with me in times of joy. For all of these things, I am grateful. Respectfully,

During my time on Hindu Society Board, I was involved in many areas of our society from facility maintenance to various fund raising programs including HSNC raffle, hosting professional programs and yearly grand Navaratri celebration. As a Hindu Society savak, I am dedicated to promote Hindu religion and culture as two main aspects of our identity. On 30 year's celebration, I thank and appreciate many who selflessly devoted their time and charity for Hindu Society to promote huma nity through Hinduism.
Suman & T. Nath Batra - We consider it to be an hour in providing the the following factual information regarding the Hindu Temple in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is for this non-provincial attitude that we ascertain, the Temple at 5400 Kaplan Drive to be the first Hindu Temple in Raleigh. The cosmopolitan attitude which was adopted at Kaplan Drive prevailed when the Temple was moved to its interim location at Boylan Street, Raleigh. The same cosmopolitan attitude (evident by the variety in the Deities honored and worshiped) is reflected in the Temple's permanent location (Aviation Pkwy, Morrisville) to the present day. Wish our best to the HSNC.
Vijaya Bapat M.D. I Am a life member of the temple. Have been involved in Starting Marathi Class, Marathi Drama club and some fund raising/educational activities on behalf of the Temple. I believe that we must educate future generation about our religion and culture if we are to preserve the same. We also need to become part of the main stream society via some activities such as providing food periodically to homeless shelters, meals on the wheels. (We are doing some of these but perhaps need to expand and publicize them more f ully). A place in the news letter for comments from member may be a good way to get member input on regular basis. Thanks for the opportunity.

It is great pleasure to serve the Society and to be in HSNC working committee and HMV board of Director. I tried my best to include everyone's name and contribution in this book. He became an American citizen in 1993. During the last 20 years Swadesh has risen to prominence within the In dian American Community, not only in his home state of North Carolina, but also nationally. In 1998, he was elected National President of the Indian American Forum for Political Education, a nationwide organization whose goals are to boost the political participation by members of the Indian American Community and to improve the relationship between the United States and India. During his tenure as National President, the IAFPE has risen in stature such that it now speaks with one the most powerful voices in Washington (the Indian American Caucus is the second largest caucus on Capital Hill). For instance, in October of 1999 for the first time in history, the power of the Indian American political voice was put on display in a front page story in the Washing ton Post. Swadesh's steadfast belief and diligence in improving U.S. -Indian relations has been the driving force behind a new and more pro-India U.S. Policy. He was one of the few Indian Americans who briefed and accompanied President Clinton on his historic trip to India in 2000 and also was a major champion for the success of Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee's visit to the United States in 2000. Swadesh is a successful businessman and entrepreneur who is President of an industrial instrumentation company in North Carolina. He has traveled worldwide and develops international business relationships, especially within Asia. Long a proponent of U.S. - India trade as the best method of bringing the two countries closer together, he has been instrumental in bringi ng Indian Trade Delegations to North Carolina and to Washington. He is also one of the co-Founders of TIE North Carolina, a group of successful businesspeople whose main goal is to produce and assist fledgling entrepreneurs. Governor James B. Hunt also appointed him a member of the North Carolina Entrepreneurial Development Board. Swadesh has a B. S. Degree in Physics from Calcutta University, a B. S. INFLUENCE OF INDIAN COMMUNITY ON AMERICAN SOCIETY
Dr. Gangadhar Sharma
Forty-six or more years ago, living in U.S was a little tough for an Asian Indian compare to today. For a totally vegetarian (not eating eggs, meat, onions and garlic) to get a good evening meal in a restaurant was a nightmare. Stores selling Indian groceries were scanty. Wheat flour was available only in some food stores such as A and P store. Not many spices were available, we were using caraway seeds instead of cumin seed 'jeera'. Look at the situation now, we get nearly everything we use in the kitchen every day. Even several varieties of fresh Indian vegetables and fruits are available in our state in not only Indian stores but also at grocery stores like Harris Teeter, Kroger, and Food Lion etc. Practically all mid-size and large cities now have sever al Indian grocery stores. This has made the life of a vegetarian much easier. An interest in vegetarian meals has spread amongst the American population too. As a result, most restaurants now offer some vegetarian dishes on their menu. Even you can get a vegetarian hamburger at fast food places. There is a Vegetarian Society in this country now. Some of their members eat only vegetables at least once a day. The medical profession has also recognized the importance of vegetarian diet. Some kind of marked change has happened in the eating habits of this country. Even in many official dinners you can request for a vegetarian meal. Indian dances have become more common at Indian festivals, wedding ceremonies and at many other functions. Americans did not know about Bhangra and Garba dances previously. But now they like to see them, even like to participate in them. Nearly all our Indian movies have songs and dances and have contributed a lot towards the mixing of young boys and girls in America through these dan ces. A cosmopolitan society is emerging due to participation of American youngsters in these activities. TV channels, through dish network, are increasing the interest in these dances. These TV channels have also increased visibility of Indian activities in this country, for example, when Prime Minister of India addressed a joint session of Senate & Congress and when President Bush welcomed him at the White House, they were shown on the TV the same day.
Our wedding festivities are exposing Indian culture to the American Society. Some of our weddings are very elaborate with varieties of food and cultural programs. All of these activities have created some interest in American society towards Indian culture and traditions. As a result, the number of jewelry stores has increased a lot, particularly in big cities. Popularity of artificial & silver jewelry has gone up too. American girls are often seen wearing anklets and toe rings. Specially, American girls like to use Henna (Mehndi) paste on their hands. You often see long lines at the Henna counter during International festivals. Tolerance towards the Hindu Religion in this country has improved some too, but has a too long way go yet. Presence of Hindu temples nearly in most of the major cities has contributed towards this. Yoga and meditation have also become common and popular in this country. Somehow there is an interest in the American Society to know more about Hindu religion. They often visit our temples to see Hindu services. Even few Universities have Sanskrit Department with full Professor, for example, the University of Indiana, Bloomington Campus, has a Chair called Ravindra Nath Tagore. There is a Hindu University at Orlando, Florida offering many different courses in Hindi and Sanskrit and also train Pandits for temples located in the U.S.
Now there is a trend among Indians to take part in the American political process. Some already hold elective offices at State and Federal level, including a US Senator, and many others are preparing to run for other elective offices. What to say about Indian Physicians, they are liked by majority of Americans, and they practice practically in every city in America. Indians contribute millions of dollars to political candidates and as a result several Indians are occupying important positions at the White House.
9000q tuor
The Indians have made remarkable contributions to the American Society in the Information Technology field. The leaders in U.S. Congress recently recognized the contributions made by the Indian IIT graduates to the American people. So far Indians have made their visibility in every aspects of American Society that is beneficial to each other. It is an on going process, every year Indians are contributing in countless ways to this country.
God Bless India and America.

Lord Ganesh (Ganesha), in Hinduism, is a son of Shiva and Parvati, and the husband of Bharati, Riddhi and Siddhi. In art, he is depicted as a pot bellied yellow or red god with four arms and the head of a one-tusked elephant, riding or attended to by a mouse. Typically, his name is prefixed with the Hindu title of respect, 'Shri.' He is one of the most beloved gods in Hinduism, because of his kindness, loyalty, and playful nature.

Lord Ganesha, has been prayed to, worshipped and adored in one form or another since thime began; and time itself began with his creation. Ganesha is a word derived from the Sanskrit roots gana, meaning 'multitude', Isha means Lord, Ruler, Supreme God, or Sovereign. Ganesha therefore literally means the 'Lord of all beings'. This is virtually synonymous with the word "Ganapati".
Ganesha is known by many other names such as Gajanana, Vinayaka, Vighneswara etc. Vighneswara is the Lord of all Obstacles, worshipped in the beginning
As Siddhidata, Lord Ganesha is the giver of success and is associated with bountiful harvests and general abundance in life. Lord Ganesha is the material manifestation of the "manas", or mind, of his father Lord Shiva. He embodies the five elements-earth, fire,

air, ether and water- and guides the elemental forces which produce and maintain order in the universe. Sometimes Lord Ganesha is depicted with two women Riddhi and Siddhi. Riddhi is prosperity and Siddhi is success. Ganesha is a celibate.
The symbols of Lord Ganesha have special significance. An elephant's head on a human body is meant to represent supreme wisdom. The combination and animal in one body signifies divinity in all the beings. The trunk which springs from his head represents the intellect. His four arms stand for the four inner equipments of the subtle body, namely mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), ego (ahankar) and conditioned consciousness (chitta). Gamesja refresemts the fire cpmscopismess. The Ata,am (self). In one hand he holds an axe and in another a rope. The axe symbolizes the destruction of all desires and attachments. The rope is meant to pull the seeker out of his worldly entanglements.

In the third hand he holds a rice ball (modak or laddoo). Modaka represents the joyous rewards of spiritual seeking. In the fourth hand he holds a lotus (Padma). The lotus represents the supreme goal of human evolution. His huge belly is indicative of contentment and inspires his devotees to develop contentment. It signifies that all things, the entire universe, are contained in him. Lord Ganesha occupies a unique place in the Hindu pantheon of Gods.

Lord Venkateswara, another form of Vishnu, residing in the seven hills of Tirupathi, was chosen as the presiding deity of Kaliyuga. This deity is also worshipped throughout India as Balaji, Srinivasa and Vekataramana. By invoking this form of Vishnu during Kaliyuga, allsins, sorrows and obstacles of life are believed to be annihilated. According to our Hindu mythology, the advent of Kaliyuga worried Brahma (the creator) who asked Narada Mahamuni to do something to avert the coming catastrophe increased lust, greed and envy etc. Accordingly, Narada proceeded to Bhooloka (the earth) and inquired of the Maharshis Vasistha, Bhrigu and Athri to name the presiding deity of Kaliyuga. As they appeared to be unsure, Brahma requested them to test the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Bhrigu who hesitantly agreed to conduct the test decided that Vishnu was the most deserving form to be worshipped. He arrived at the decision because both Brahma and Shiva are upset at Bhrigu for disturbing them while Vishnu, despite being kicked on by chest by Bhrigu, welcomed him and made him repent for his action. Goddess Mahalakshmi (the consort of Vishnu) felt insulted when Bhrigu kicked Vishnu on his chest (her place of abode) and left Vaikuntha to take the form of Padmavati on earth. Vishnu, feeling miserable at her departure, reached the hills of Seshadri where he meditated and attained the form of Srinivasa. Lord Srinivasa met Padmavati who he recognized to be Mahalakshmi, and proposed to her. However, the lord did not have adequate finances to meet the marriage expenses and borrowed the money from Kubera, the Treasurer for Brahma. A sum of 14 lakhs gold coins with the inscription of Sri Rama were borrowed by Lord Venkateswara with an agreement that the interest on the money would be paid till the end of Kaliyuga and the principal at the end of the said period.

This ideal of Sita can change the life in many homes today.
RAM SITA LAKSHMAN राम सीता लक्ष्मण
Lord Rama is one of the ten avatars (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. He was born in Treta yuga as son of King Dashratha of Ayodhya. He was the eldest son of King Dashratha. His younger brothers were Bharat, Shatrughna and Lakshmana. Lord Rama is hero of famous epics Ramayana written by Maharshi Valmiki, and Ramacharit Manasa written by Tulsida. Ram and his wife Sita together represent ideal man and woman whose characters are worth emulating.
Lakshman was the devoted younger brother of Rama. He is considered to be Avatar of Shesh Nag, the big serpent god who supports earth on his head. Lakshman plays the role of an ideal brother when he accompanies Rama and Sita to forest. He leaves behind his wife and leads the chaste life of a yogi for 14 years even without sleep. His dedication to the service of Rama and Sita is unparalleled in the history of mankind.
Rama, Sita and Lakshman along with Hanuman are one of the most popular combination of deities ruling the hearts of millions of Hindus.
Rama is the ideal of social and domestic virtues, the epitome of gentleness, goodness and valor, of heroism tempered with humility and prowess combined with mildness. He is a lion in war and a lamb in peace. He was the ideal loving husband who wept torrents at his separation from Sita but in case of conflicts between his duties as a husband and a king, he chose the latter for the greater good.
He is often referred to as Maryada Purshottam, best amongst the men and acting within the human limits. He never used his godly powers though he was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This is in contrast with the character of Lord Krishna who is known to have manifested his superhuman powers on many occasions. Rama was an ideal man, son, brother, and king. He gladly relinquished the kingdom of Ayodhya and accepted to live in forest for 14 years to keep the words of his father. When Lakshman was hit by Shakti in the battle with Ravana and was lying unconscious, Rama as an affectionate brother cried like a human being showing all the emotions.
Sita was daughter of King Janak of Mithila. She was an incarnation of goddess Lakshmi. She is depicted as ideal woman, wife and mother. When Rama decides to go to forest to keep the words of his father she decides to accompany him. Everyone including Rama himself tries to dissuade her from going but she stands firm in her resolve. She says that a wife's place is always with the husband in good as well as bad times. Husband and wife must share good and bad things in life and be together.

RADHA KRISHNA
राधा कृष्ण
Lord Krishna was a dynamic incarnation of Vishnu. He was an Avatar, in the sense that he was totally attuned to the Supreme consciousness from his very birth. He has several other popular names such as Madhava, Mukunda, Murari, Shyam and Gopala. His incarnation represents the descent of the Infinite Brahman to the material world. The lord is described as being blue in color and donning yellow clothes (peetambara) with a bamboo flute (vansi) that brings out enchanting music to mesmerize his devotees. His incarnation brought to bear upon the Indian thought and life such a profound and powerfull influence that it has no parallel in India or elsewhere. There is no aspect of life, of culture and of civilization which did not receive his revitalizing touchthe Indian philosophy and religion, mysticism, poetry, painting, music and dance where all influenced by the Krishna theme and thoughts. Every aspect of Krishna and his deeds, is pregnant with deep mystical symbolism indicating the highest Truth. The word KRISHNA indicates the supreme consciousness which is said to be dark (Shyam), in the sense that it is unseen by or unknown to one as long as one remains rooted in earthly experiences limited to the realms of perceptions, emotions and thoughts gained through the physical body and intellect. Krishna was the major character of Mahabharat (The Indian Epic) in which He preaches Karma Yoga to Arjuna through Bhagavad Gita (The sacred book of Hindus).
Radha is the consort of Krishna who was the beloved mischievous and enchanting boy of Brindavan. The most beautiful and beloved amongst the gopikas (milk maids) was Radha. Her love and devotion for Krishna was unmatched. The love of Radha and Krishna is symbolic of the eternal love affair between the devoted mortal and the Divine. Radha's yearning for union with her beloved Krishna is the soul's longing for spiritual awakening and for union with the one source of peace and bliss. Rada symbolizes a unique state of devotion that is bound to lead to a merger with the Lord.

Lord Hnuman is also known by other popular names like Anjaneya, Bajrang Bali, Pavan Suta, Mahavir, Sankat Mochan, Hanumat, Hanumant, etc. He is worshipped in all parts of India. The popular days for his worship are Tuesday and Saturday. On these days devotees recite Hanuman Chalisa and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak with great fervor. In South India, Hanuman is visualized as a five headed and multiple armed God, thus multiplying his capabilities manyfold. Various forms of Hanuman worship are described in Hanumat Kavya, Hanumat Kirtan, and Hanumat Paddhati etc.
Swami Vivekanand said "You have now to make the character of Mahavir your ideal. He has no care for life or death. He was a perfect master of his senses and wonderfully sagacious. You have now to build your life on this great ideal of personal service. Through that, all the other ideals will gradually manifest in life. Obedience to the Guru and a strict observance of Brahmacharya celibacy and abstinence) is the secret of his success."
The character of Hanuman Ji is very important in Ramayana. He is portrayed as a perfect devotee of Lord Rama. On one hand he represents the ideal of service and on the other he represents endless strength and courage, striking the whole world with awe. He has no hesitation in sacrificing his life for the good of Rama. Service to Rama was his supreme mott. His dedication and devotion to Lord Rama is remarkable in the history of mankind. He was born in the monkey race as the son of Anjana and Kesari. Anjana had the blessings of Pavan Dev (the Wind God) and for that reason he is known as Pavan Sut or Pavan Putra (son of Wind God). The word 'Hanu' means 'jaw'. Thus the word 'Hanuman' means one with a thick jaw. According to the scriptures Hanuman was short, stocky, and golden brown in color. As a child he leapt for the Sun. The King of Gods 'Indra' used his 'Vajra' to stop little Hanuman. He fell down on a hill and broke his jaw. Thence forth he was known as 'Hanuman' the 'one with a thick jaw'.
As a character, Hanuman represents a perfect man of education and culture, proficient, efficient and ever a go getter. Nothing seems to be impossible for him. He is one of the seven 'Chiranjivis', those who are said to live for ever. He is thought to be present in this world with us even today. His character demonstrates that nothing is impossible to achieve if one sets a goal and does not deviate from it. He shows that our spiritual development is initiated by a single pointed devotion to God. He who always thinks of the supreme becomes great. Absolute surrender to God is the secret of great

GODDESS MINAKSHI DEVI मीनाक्षी देवी
Goddess Parvati incarnated herself as a mortal, reigned as the Pandyan Princess, wedded Lord Shiva and performed 64 miracles for the devotees. Her trousseau is exhibited in the best bourgeois fashion: golden saris, emeralds and rubies, and gem studded crowns. Her dowry included mountains of sugary sweetmeats overlaid with beaten silver. Meenakshi means one with the eyes of meen (fish). She stands with a parrot and a bouquet, radiating love and compassion. The sublime grace of the divine mother and her infinite mercy are beyond description.
The shrine of Meenakshi Devi is a replica from the famous temple in the ancient city of Madurai, situated in Tamilnadu state of India. The present temple was constructed by Tirumala Nayak, who ruled the Pandya kingdom from 1623 to 1659 A.D. The Meenakshi temple complex in Madurai occupies an area of 16 acres. It has massive walls and tall towers. The tallest tower is 169 feet high south tower.
Madurai is a well planned city where festivals for Meenakshi Devi are celebrated throughout the year. Most important festivals are in the month of Chaitra mid April to mid May), shravan (mid August to mid September) and thai (mid January to mid February). Chaitra purnima, the full moon day of Chaitra, is believed to be her wedding anniversary and is considered to be most auspicious.

GODDESS DURGA DEVI दुर्गा देवी
सर्व मङ्गल माङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि । नारायणि नमोऽस्तुते ।।
Goddess Durga devi is described in the scriptures as old as Rig-Veda, Yajur-Veda, and Taittiriya Upanishad as "DURGA", the divine protectress of all living creatures against the peril of evil and destructive forces, and the defender of the heavens against the onslaught of demons. She is also worshipped as "Mahakali, Chandi, Gouri" and by a thousand other names.
One of the ancient narrative literature entitled "Markandeya Purana" narrates the glory of the goddess in her spectacular victory in heaven-shaking battles against the inveterate demons. The most widely worshipped form is " Mahishasura Mardhini", the destroyer of the demon who took the disguise of a buffalo. In this form, Durga Devi was worshipped by the heroes of two great Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, In Ramayan, Lord Rama worshipped Durga Devi to seek the power for his conquest of Lanka from the Demon king Ravana who had kidnapped his wife Sita. In Mahabharat, Lord Krishna advised the eldest of the Pandava brothers, Yudhishthir, to invoke the blessings of Durga Devi, at the start of the battle of Kurukshetra. Thus, we can see that in both epics, the victory of "truth" over "evil" is indirectly attributed to the blessings of Durga Devi. In our times, the great celebrations of "Dussera" in the month of October, accompanied by worship of Durga Devi, is the reenactment of Lord Rama's worship and victory with the goddess's blessings.
Mother "Shakti" also worshipped as "Kali", the Dark Form, symbolizes the eternal force holding the past, the resent and the future or "Maha Kal" together. Goddess Durga is also worshipped regularly in various forms and callings, such as "Jagat-dhatri", the deliveress of the world, as the goddess with four arms, sitting on a lion; "Annapurna", the munificent goddess, or Lord Shiva's consort, "Parvati" the daughter of the Himalayas, "Chandi" or "Chamunda Devi", also called "Chhinnamasta" in Haryana, and known as "Kamakhya Devi" in Assam.
The inherent "power" of the Trinity is the primeaval feminine power "Adya-Shakti" (Cosmic energy) or "Bhavani" mother soul of the universe). The great sages variously explained this relationship as the inseparable properties or ideas, like water and its fluidity, like mild and its whiteness, like gems and their glow like the oceans and its waves. This inseparable identity of the goddess Shakti with the Parama-Brahman is implied in her being called "Chandi" or "Chamunda-Devi" (which in Sanskrit means Chit Shakti, or the power of the supreme soul beyond the bounds of time and space). She is also worshipped as "Narayanee", the intrinsic power of "Narayan" or Lord Vishnu. Calling Shakti as "Katyayani" reminisces her appearance in the hermitage of the very ancient sage name Katyayan in the

LAKSHMI NARAYAN
लक्ष्मी नारायण
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and the consort of Lord Vishnu, or Narayan, who represents the power of sustenance. In order to sustain life, one must possess wealth. Wealth in this context does not only mean money, it also includes the nobler values of life, the power of the mind, intellect, moral and ethical qualities etc. which constitute the spiritual wealth. According to a story in the Bhagwat Purana, the Gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) churned the ocean of milk (Kshirsagar) for obtaining the nectar (Amrit). One of the precious things that came out of the ocean was Goddess Lakshmi. The emergence of Lakshmi represents two things. The "churning of ocean" implies that one needsred intense efforts (Purushartha) to acquire material or spiritual wealth. Also, the emergence of Lakshmi from the ocean symbolizes the creation and development of ethical and cultural values of life in one's bosom when one's pure (satwik) mind is churned by the process of reflection and contemplation upon the higher self.
Lord Narayan is one of the trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) representing the Power of Sustenance. He is the one who manifests himself in the world among mankind at appropriate eras in the form of various incarnations to rid life of its evil propensities and to make the world ready for greater evolution.
Traditionally, he is described as blue in color, clothed in yellow, wearing a crown, and standing upon a lotus divine. He has four hands and he holds in them the Conch (Shankha), the Discus (Chakra), the Mace (Gada), and Lotus (Padma). Every one of these represents a significant symbol very scientifically employed to indicate that Narayan is none other than the Divine mighty self which is the "Changeless Center" around all changes, the "Imperishable Essence" in the midst of all the perishable finite things.
The "hand that holds the conch" is symbolized as the intellect (buddhi), the "hand that holds the Discus" as the ego, "that which holds the Mace" as the mind (manas), and "that which holds the Lotus" as the

consciousness (Chitta). The discriminating intellect gives us the call and points out a more rewarding way-of-life, and in case we ignore this silent whisper of the heart and plunge into a life of extrovertedness, the mind gives endless knocks to that personality. If even then, we are not able to realize our folly and withdraw our selves from the dissipating ways of living, the arrogant ego fattened by these stupidities of the mind in revolt against the intellect, ultimately drives the individual to its total doom.

Blue is the color of Infinity. Whatever is immeasurable can appear to the mortal eye only as blue; thus a cloudless summer sky is blue to us. The yellow represents the earth. Anything that is buried in the earth gathers a yellowish hue, and in fire, earth (mud, silica) glows yellowish. Thus, Sri Narayan represents the immeasurable, all-pervading reality (blue color) clothed in earthy matter (yellow color), meaning Sri Narayan is the Infinite clothed in matter. He is the Infinity expressed through a finite form.

SRINATHJI श्रीनाथ जी
When Lord Krishna was seven years old, he took the form of Shrinath Ji. He lifted Govardhana mountain (near his birth place Mathura) with his little finger and Govardhan swaroop (form) came into existence. The Vaishnavas (those who worshipped Lord Vishnu) became the followers of Govardhanath, later migrated to Nathdwara in Rajasthan and established Lord Krishna as Shrinath Ji. The subsect "Pushtimargiya Vaishnavas" worship Shrinath Ji.
Shrinath Dhama is situated in the middle of outher four Dhamas (main places of pilgrimage). These Dhamas are Badri Nath in the north, Rameshwaram or Rangnath in the south, Jagannath in the east and Dwarika Nath in the west. Due to its location, Shrinath Ji is very popular in Rajasthan, Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Shrinath Ji's form (swaroop) is black. He is in a standing form with Govardhana mountain in the background. His right hand is closed in a fist resting on his waist. It signifies that he has captured all sins in his hand and he is ready to relieve us of all our evils. His left hand is raised as if he is inviting all of his followers with the message "I am ready to relieve you of all the life's miseries!"
As time wore on, Shrinath Ji adopted seven different swaroops (forms). Nonetheless, the vaishnavas predominantly worship the main Shrinath Ji swaroop.

Shiva is one of the trimurthi (Trinity) - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, respectively incharge of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the world. He is known by many other names in the various parts of India. Shankar, Mahadev, Mahesh, Shiv Shankar, Bhole Nath are some of his popular names. He has his abode on Kailash mountain and is also know as Kailashpati.
He is depicted in Yoga Mudra performing Samadhi. He has a drum and Trishul, the Trident next to him. He wears Vaghambar (the tiger skin) around his waist, and Rudraksha garland and snakes around his neck. Holy river Ganga is said to have been locked up in his long matted hair to break the destructive power of her torrential flow. It was later released by him for the benefit of mankind.
The matted hair proclaims the length and intensity of his Tapasya (meditation). The Cobra around his neck signifies that even the most poisonous desires are subdued by a yogi. One who has identified himself with the Supreme, has gone beyond all the effects of matter relating to his sense organs and has become immune even to the deadliest of the poisons. The third eye in the midst of the forehead represents the concentration of Jnana (knowledge) and absolute power to destroy Tama (evil). The blue color of the nect symbolizes the pervasiveness of Maya or Avidya up to the neck, and beyond the neck is the seat of Jnana leading to immortality. The ashes on his body symbolize that the body of which we are proud is ultimately bound to end up as ashes. The trident stands for Sama, Dama, and Vairagya which dispel and destroy the six weaknesses - Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Mada, and Matsara (passion, anger, covetousness, attachment, arrogance and jealousy) which pull us down. By directing the trident against these weaknesses, and winning over them one can attain the Moksha or liberation. The tiger skin apparel stands for Vairagya (renunciation). Shiva's half closed eyes while in meditation, signify a yogi's detachment even in the midst of a material world.

Goddess Parvati represents this universal power. The goddess is also known Annapurna meaning the bestower of food, Anna. The food here has a wider meaning and includes all material object/wealth with are food for five sense organs. The goddess is endowed with different types of food that she provides to her devotees.
PARVATI DEVI
NANDI.
Parvati Devi also known as Girija, Uma or Bhavani is the consort of Lord Shiva. She is the daughter of Himvan, the king of mountains. In her previous life she was born as Sati, daughter of king Daksha. She took her own life during an Yajna (fire worship) performed by her father king Daksha because he did not invite her and her husband to the Yajna and insulted Lord Shiva. When she was born as daughter of Himvan, she performed Tapasya to marry Lord Shiva. During her Tapasya, she lived for many years on leaves and was given the name Aparna.
Nandi the bull is conceived as the vahana, or the vehicle of Lord Shiva. In Shiva temples, Nandi is always placed in front of the chief shrine or just outside it, with its head turned away from the deity but the gaze fixed on it. It is interpreted as jivatman, the individual soul, with its animal nature pulling it away from the god, but his grace pulling the jivatman back to him. Ashoka Chakra in the center of the Indian flag is also known as the 'Dharma Chakra'. The "wheel of the law" in the Sarnath Lion Capital made by the 3rd -century BC Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. The chakra intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. Twenty-four spokes reminds us that we are vigilant in all 24 hours.

Hindu Festivals
Diwali, Holi and Raksha Bandhan
DEEPAVALI or DIWALI
This Diwali or Deepavali is a festival of lights (Deepa means light and Avali meaning a row). It is celebrated on Naraka chathurthasi day just on the dawn of Ammavaasa in the month of October or Novermber. We glow lamps to welcome Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity and Multi-colored Rangoli Diwali is celebrated for five days; First day is called DHANTERAS or DHANTRAYODASHI, SECOND day is called CHOTI DIWAL., The Third day of the festival of Diwali is the most important day of LAKSHMI -PUJA which is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess Lakshmi. This is the day when God Rama came back to Ayodhya with his brother Laxman and wife Sita, after spending 14 years in VANVAS'. In some part of India, people burn fire cracers in the evening, to celebrate Rama's return to the Ayodhaya. The FOURTH day is PADWA or VARSHAPRATIPADA which marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and VikaramSamvat was started from this Padwa day and the last and the FIFTH and final day of Diwali Festival is known by the name of "BHAYYA-DUJ".
Perform Laxmi Puja , put Deeps on your door and other places in your house . Lastly enjoy the fireworks
HOLI the festival of color
Festival of color or Holi is celebrated on the day after the full moon in early March each year. In Hindu Mythology, there was an arrogant king, who resents his son Prahlada for worshipping Lord Vishnu. He tries to kill his son but fails. Finally he requests his sister Holika who is said to be immune to burning, sits with the boy in a huge fire. But Prahlada emerges unscathed, while his aunt burns to death in this event. To commemorate it, we burn huge bonfires on the eve of Holi. It is also celebrated for good harvests and fertility of land. We put colors on each other on Holi.
Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan or the 'bond of protection' is a festival the celebration of brother sister relationship. On this day we celebrate the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. This day both pray for each other's well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill. This day brother pledge to sister to protect her from all harms and troubles and sister pray from god to protect him from any evil. Sister put Rakhi on brothers' hand and gives him sweets. Brother also gives gifts to the sister.
Aarti for Brother
Give sweets to each other
Put Rakhi
Take blessings

Note from the Author It has been my pleasure to write this book about the HSNC on its 30 year anniversary. I tried my best to include all the names and comments, where ever possible about all the members. But Our Society is very large, with more than thousand active members; it is always possible, that we may have missed someone's name or comments. Please apologize me for any such mistakes. Best wishes to all the readers. God bless us all. Thanks and my best Regards.
