________________ * The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ And the good which each one should do to his neighbour, which is the surest means of being quickly absorbed into the Eternal Spirit; "he who had recovered his primitive purity," Issa said, "would die having obtained pardon for his sins, and the right to contemplate the majestic figure of God.” 7 In traversing the heathen territories the divine Issa taught that the worship of visible gods was contrary to natural law. 8 "For man," he said, “has not been favoured with the power to see the image of God and to construct a host of divinities resembling the Eternal One." 9 “Besides it is incompatible with the human conscience to esteem the grandeur of divine purity less than animals or works executed by the hand of man in stone or metal.” 10 "The Eternal Legislator is one infinite; there are no other gods but Him, He has not shared the world with anyone, nor has He informed anyone of His intentions." 11 “Just as a father would act toward his children, so shall God judge men after their death according to His merciful laws; never will. He humiliate His child by making his soul migrate into the body of a beast as in purgatory." 12 "The celestial law," said the Creator through the mouth of Issa, “scorns the immolation of human beings to a statue or to an - 102
