in the "Bhagavati Sūtra" of the Jainas. A completely general rule is given by Mahāvira in the 'Ganitasārasaṁgraha' written in 850 A. D. These would have us infer that even before the Sthānañga Sutra' Jaina scholars had been studying mathematics. However, the first recorded enumeration of the components of mathematics is in the 'Sthānañga Sūtra' and it created a paradigm for Indian mathematics.
