________________ Appendix-2 fathom the unbearable suffering caused by his deeds to others when he himself gets pained greatly even by the prick of a thorn. He further reflected that as the ocean remains unsatiated even with the water of hundreds of rivers, the human beings too remain unsatiated with the worldly sense-pleasures. They foolishly keep on yearning for more and more sense-pleasures till the end of their lives. “I myself have enjoyed the indescribable happiness of the heavens but that too has proved to be transient,” the Lord said to Himself while recollecting the events of His past life in Aparājita super-heaven. He released all the animals from captivity and decided not to marry and instead tread the path that leads to the supreme happiness that is evolved by the Self and, therefore, not dependent on the senses. The Laukāntika devas from Brahmaloka came down to worship the Lord. Lord Aristanemi spent 56 days in asceticism (chadmasthakāla), performing austerities and deep meditation. He then burnt completely, with the powerful fire of self-concentration, the four inimical karmas and attained the all-embracing knowledge - Omniscience (kevalajñāna). The eight splendours (prātihārya) associated with omniscience appeared to proclaim the glory of the Lord. The time period of Lord's renunciation (samyamakāla) was 700 years out of which He spent 699 years 10 months and 4 days as Omniscient. Lord Aristanemi lived for 1,000 years and attained liberation (nirvāṇa) from Mount Urjayanta on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of Āsādha – āşādha krşņa aștami. Chief among the Lord's Apostles (gañadhara) was sage Varadatta Svāmī. Victory to Supreme Effulgence - Omniscience - that reflects, as it were in a mirror, all substances and their infinite modes. O Lord Neminātha! You had taught the world the way to attain it. 207
