________________ MAIN TEMPLE 12 HA RSS SERLER w BOS A View of the Main Temple As we climb the stairs, we are face to face with the main temple of Lord Rushabhdev. Being the first Tirthankar, he is also called Ädinäth. Ädi means the beginning. It is well known that Lord Rushabhadev attained liberation on mount Kailäs in Himalayas. According to the popular belief, however, he came to this place countless number of times and gained salvation here. His temple is therefore believed to be existing since the time immemorial and to have undergone many renovations even in the prehistoric times. Historically, the present temple was constructed in the 12th century during the reign of Kumärpäl, the Solanki king of Gujarät. There is an interesting background associated with that construction. The earlier mentioned Udayan Mantri, who was Kumärpäls chief minister, was once entrusted with the task of conquering Saurashtra.
