________________ CHAPTER XVI VRIŞABHA SEN GANADHARA AT, TÆT, SUV, rau, aldatzit, alare i आदिपुरुष अदीश जिन बन्दौं वारंवार ॥ [Tr. Again and again. I salute the First (Perfect); Man, Sri Rişabha Deva, the Lord of the Conquerors, who is Undecaying, Immortal, Unperishing, Immutable and the Protector of those who have no protection !] --(Jaina Adoration.) The nirvāna of a WORLD TEACHER is termed the fifth kalyānaka (auspicious event); and devas and men assemble to celebrate it. When Risabha Deva attained nirvana, devas flocked on the Mount Kailāsa and celebrated the glorious Event in their usual manner. The bodies of the Perfect Ones are dispersed, like camphor, and only some hairs and nails are left behind. Indra collected the hairs and nails of Risabha Deva and created a body with his powers of illusion to resemble the Lord's. This body they cremated, and besmeared their own bodies with its ashes. They also cremated those Gañadharas and saints who had reached nirdāna with the Lord, in separate fires, 188
