It is natural that historians and also Sanskrit or Pâli professors would have preferred a purely historical and merely critical treatment of the subject. Prof. Richard Garbe, of Königsberg, when consulted before the publication of the Gospel of Buddha, expressed his disapproval of the general plan, and vigorously objected to any consideration of North Buddhistic traditions.
