Dr S. Gopalan who holds two Ph.D. Degrees, - one from the Madras University, in India and another from the McMaster University in Canada - was awarded the Di Litt. Degree by his alma mater, the Madras, University, in 1982 for his researches in Philosophy. He is the author of several books and has published a number of papers in learned journals in and outside India. His earlier book on Jainism, Outlines of Jainism proved to be so popular that a Hindi edition of the book was also brought out. The English edition is consulted widely by students of Indian philosophy in several Universities in the English-speaking world. In 1981, The Indian Philosophical Congress invited him to deliver the Annual Jaina lecture which was published in a monograph from with the litle. The Ethico-Social Dimensions of Jainism : An Interpretation. Dr Gopalan is now in charge of teaching, courses in Indian philosophy at the National University of Singapore. During 1985-1990 Dr Gopalan gave seminars in India philosophy in various Universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Canada also a member of the Board of Book -consultants for the reputed, Journal, Metaphilosophy being published by Basil Blackwell, Oxford.
