He lived, studied and taught in India, and could read and speak Hindi and Gujarati. He was a formative figure in the transformation of the older style Sanskrit studies into modern area studies, first known as Indian Studies, and more recently usually as South Asian Studies. Under his leadership, the first Department of South Asian Regional Studies in the United States was started at the University of Pennsylvania in 1948. He was also largely responsible for the founding of the American Institute of Indian Studies, which today is one of the most important organisations promoting the study of India in the United States.
