We have seen how the ether, which is the same for all of us, as distinguished from your ether or my ether, must be supposed to pervade all times as well as all space, no valid distinction can be drawn between its occupancy of time and space. The framework of time to which we must compare the time dimension of the ether, is of course ready to hand it, is the division of the day into hours, minutes and seconds. And unless we think of this division as material, which no one ever does or has done, we are not justified in thinking of the ether as material. In the new light which the theory of relativity has cast over Science, we see that a material ether filling space could only be accompanied by a material ether filling time-the two stand or fall together. In the beginning of the chapter he clarifies the subject further "It may be well to state our conclusion in advance It is, in brief, that the ethers and their undulations, the waves which form the universe, are in all probability fectitious This is not to say that they have no existence at all, they exist in our minds, or we should not be discussing them, and something must exist outside our minds to put this or any other concept into our minds. To this something we may temporarily assign the name "reality" and it is this reality which is the object of Science to study. But we shall find that this reality is something very different from what the Scientist of fifty years ago
