________________ JAIN : THE CONCEPT OF PARYAYA AND JAINA WAY OF LIFE 65 1. It is the foundation of the Jaina view of Reality and helps in understanding full completeness of exisence. 2. It endows the Jaina system of philosophy with scientific character or basis in so far as it "purges off any theological dogma and does not bring in a di exmachina for the guidance of the developmental process," as Kalipada Mitra rightly remarks. 25 3. It forms the basis of the dynamic process of development and evolution. 4. Paryāya or change makes possible growth and adds newness and freshness in life. 5. It forms the genesis of the Jaina doctrine of Anekānta since permanence and change or impermanance, one and many, unity and diversity, etc. inhere in the same substance. 6. As according to the concept of paryāya, the conscious substance or jīva may and does develop vibhava paryāyas while retaining its innate character or intrinsic purity (the inherent properties of infinite vision, knowledge, bliss or vigour), it provides the basis for self-realization, i.e. re-gaining the suabhāva or the state of pure consciousness, the highest form of its purity, vigour and calmness or peace, the fullest development of personality and liberation from passions. 7. By emphasizing that the relationships, possessions and attachments in the world are transitory, it prescribes a way of life, a sādhanā (practice) of cultivating the attitude of nonclinging to those fleeting and passing relationships, etc. nonattachment, calmness and equanimity by overcoming one's passions (anger, pride, deceit and greed) and practicing selfcontrol and limiting one's desires and acquisitions. 25.
